The talent level just isn't there. I don't know what's up with these guys but they have like 2 good players and 0 great players. A ton of decent players. Coaching is the only thing getting them wins

they're officially a bubble team now. RPI and kenpom are both mid 30's. God it would be nice to watch them self destruct.

Roy needs to start taking the blame. He was solely responsible for UNC's slow start last year. It was clear he was playing the wrong guys and it took the media and fans hounding him to play correct lineups. Once they went small they were a really solid team.

This year the roster is flawed because they have several good bigs but they are missing wings.

Even still look at last night. He allocated NINETY minutes to players who can't help you win games. There are only 200 available minutes and you're going to give half of them to guys who don't help you win? That's a recipe for losing quite a few games. You simply have to devise lineups comprised of guys who are good and limit the minutes you give to guys who are not good.

24 - Leslie McDonald
19 - Nate Britt
30 - JP Tokoto
7 - Isaiah Hicks
2 - Desmond Hubert

Quick fix:

1) Never play Desmond Hubert. The guy is a total disaster. Not even an ACC caliber rotation player. He can't rebound, he's got a higher turnover rate than a kid with multiple sclerosis, and he can't score. The occasional blocked shot is not worth playing a guy who is a horrible, horrible basketball player. 2 minutes saved already.

2) Never play Isaiah Hicks. Yeah, he blocks a lot of shots. But he can't score, he can't rebound, and he turns it over non stop. He's an ACC rotation player at some schools, but not on a team that is loaded with big men. 9 minutes saved already.

3) Play Nate Britt as sparingly as possible. I would say NEVER play Britt and keep Paige at PG for 40 minutes but I recognize he may need a few minutes to rest or play off the ball. And it's not like UNC has any other option at SG besides L-Mac who isn't that good and probably can't play 40 minutes also. Nate Britt shoots like Tyler Lewis, rebounds like Tyler Lewis, and turns the ball over like the Princess Bride. 5 minutes max. 23 minutes saved already.

4) JP Tokoto. He's not good but they don't really have another option other than playing McAdoo at the 3. McAdoo isn't good at the 4 and he's certainly not good at the 3. So just throw your hands in the air here and curse yourself for recruiting two guys who aren't good. No minutes saved.

5) Leslie McDonald. He isn't good but at least he doesn't suck like Nate Britt sucks. Just play the guy another 14 minutes because he doesn't suck like Nate Britt sucks. Technically this cancels 14 minutes "saved" but at least you have a guy who doesn't suck playing instead of a guy who sucks like Nate Britt sucks. So we'll count this as saving suckage minutes.

There I just made UNC significantly better just by not playing the guys who suck.

Next you bench McAdoo for being completely average in every way imaginable and play your guys who are good instead. Their names are Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson. Reduce McAdoo and Joel James minutes and play the guys who are good instead. This is really, really basic coaching. Play the guys who are good and don't play the guys who are not good. It's called optimizing your talent. Allocating your minutes to guys who don't suck (like Nate Britt)

that may or may not be true but he shouldn't be starting for UNC, they have better
players than him.

His anemic shooting and rebounding allergies really negate his solid steal/block rate. His awful FT shooting negates his main offensive skill which is getting to the FT line.

McAdoo is horrible. I am now convinced he will not get drafted unless something drastic happens (like every other college basketball player dying).

I've watched a majority if UNC games this year and I just can't figure out how they have beaten UL, UK, and MSU. Even when they are hitting on all cylinders, they shouldn't beat those teams. But alas...they do...and the only thing I can come up with is that Paige was pretty much unconscious in those games and he has played like dog shit in the last two games. If he plays poor, they can only beat BC.

Its because of Roy being a great coach running a definitive system. Playing more guys gives the system merit.

They dominated michigan state and it wasn't a fluke and it wasn't all paige. They beat them in almost every aspect of the game. Izzo teams always have trouble with Roy. Its just a philosophical mismatch. UNC isn't going to out-talent many teams this year but they can still outcoach teams.

It's really not that hard to figure out UNC.

When Paige shoots well, they can beat anyone.
When Paige doesn't shoot well, they can lose to anyone.

You can go ahead and count on Paige having a monster game against us. UNC reminds me of their team from last year, started ok, having a rough patch, eventually these young guys will start playing better and they'll get adjusted. Really just have to hope we play them before they figure it out and start playing consistent basketball.

I for one am looking forward to Barber vs. Paige. Clearly Paige is a year ahead and a better player at this point...but Cat could really disrupt him and make him work on D.

If UNC is even in the 40s in the RPI, they are getting in due to the fact that they are UNC.

Face is right though about the rotation. Roy has it all fucked up again. Meeks and Johnson should be getting more minutes, but Meeks may have the same problem as Anya in that he's too out of shape to play 15 mpg.

McAdoo is such a waste of amazing physical gifts. Dude has literally gotten worse while at UNC which does not say much about Roy. Maybe Roy can only develop guards now??

HUGE difference....no PJ and no Bullock. 6'5"+ guys who could shoot, rebound, and defend.

Only chance UNC has at making even a decent run this year is if McDonald somehow turns into an All-ACC player (which isn't happening). I think Paige is a great player...but he's literally and figuratively not strong enough to carry that team.

UNC off of a #8 seed in the NCAA tournament has had to replace Bullock/Hairston with McDonald and Tokoto. End of story.

Didn't the last time they lost to a huge underdog they bounced back and dominated the #1 team in the nation on their home court? They have the #2 team in the nation this Saturday, hope that history doesn't repeat itself...

This is basically Roy's system. He has to have a good point guard. The rest doesn't matter. If his point guard is great and pushing the ball, the team is great. If his point guard sucks, they suck.

The whole "only one player I've coached here at UNC hasn't graduated" line from Roy was awesome. Don't think he understands that that's part of everyone's point - 95% of those guys graduated with an AFAM degree and apparently a bunch of them were illiterate. Graduating doesn't mean shit if you didn't earn it and got a fake degree. Guy really seems to be losing it.

Eh...Marcus Paige is a damn good point guard (who looks like he's wearing down right now). He might not be Felton/Lawson...but he's good.

Bottom line is that Roy needs great players all over. His really good teams have been loaded all over the place. Great big men? May and Hansbrough. Great shooting guards? Ellington and McCants. Great point guards? Felton and Lawson. He would/should have won it all in '11 with another great point guard (Marshall), big man/men (Zeller/Henson), and SG/SF (Barnes)...but Marshall and Henson got hurt.

At the very least...he needs a decent point guard and a really good big man because he loves centering his offense around the post....last year being his one big deviation when he just had Bullock and Hairston jacking up threes.

^That's my point. When Paige is playing well, they can beat any team in the country. When he's not, they are losing to Belmont and Miami. It was the same way with Marshall. They stunk his freshman year, but once he started playing better, everyone got better.

Paige is a little different from the other guards though, because he is their best scorer. Usually, Roy likes his guards to push the basketball and let his wings do the scoring. But this year, their wings just cant finish (other than Tokoto). This is also the reason why MacAdoo was rated so high after his freshman year. He had Marshall as his point guard, setting him up for easy layups and dunks.

He needs a PG and a big. His biggest problem is that McAdoo is probably one of the worst recruiting busts in recent history. Not only did he not live up to his potential, but he's mediocre enough and looks athletic so Roy still plays him despite his sucking.

Paige is a good college guard but he's not going to play in the NBA so he cant carry a roster like this

yrey, the zone has utterly confused UNC. They have to be one of the worst 3 point shooting teams in the land and McAdoo can't find any soft spots nor could he hit a 14 footer anyway. Boeheim is the best zone coach in America and is his chosen style of defense. UNC will need to go something in the neighborhood of 14-21 from downtown to beat the Cuse.

Halfcourt teams like Cuse and Miami who slow the game down don't just slow it down on their end of the court. While UNC can push the ball offensively, you saw last night because of Miami taking the air out of the ball (on their end) it took away any rhythm UNC was starving to get on their end.

If any team doesn't zone UNC until they shoot successfully over it, they are fools.

They barely cracked it against Miami...at home. Sloppy play by the Canes at the end was the only reason they got there. It was glorious.
