Ever since the majority of the big named coaches were dispelled by WRAL/N&O/ESPN, it kinda lost a little power....

Barnes courtship continues

Quote :
"It's too bad Lee Corso isn't around to scream "Not so fast, my friend" on the Rick Barnes front.

While there is no strong reason to predict Barnes will leave Texas to coach basketball at N.C. State, he has not completely closed the door on the Wolfpack advances.

That's how the situation stood as of Friday afternoon - hours after it was widely reported that Barnes had told State to buzz off.

The odds of Barnes saying "yes" to State are no better than one in five, but he'll remain at the top of the target list until he says there is no chance.

The lines of communication between the two parties will remain open even as State expands its search. John Calipari of Memphis and John Brady of Louisiana State likely will be contacted soon. And the Wolfpack still has interest in Jay Wright, but the Villanova coach is seen as a long shot at best.

Back at Texas, Barnes has been told by school officials that his total financial package for 2006-07 will be increased from approximately $1.3 million annually to $1.8 million, plus incentives. However, nothing has been signed and will not be for several days.

The issue with Barnes isn't the money. Both schools are willing to pay roughly the same. The intangibles favor Texas in that there Barnes has a national top-10 program, he genuinely likes Austin and is under no heavy pressure to win anything more than 20 to 25 games each season.

In State's favor is a historic passion for the sport and the program Barnes has always wanted to coach. Among the
X-factors is high school superstar Kevin Durant, who signed with Texas for the specific purpose of playing for Barnes."

I agree. He won't come here if we keep screwing around with Barnes, who cannot decide if he wants to or not. Ill bet Calipari would jump on us if we offered him first.

He doesn't wanna be second fiddle.

Calipari=slimeball, not Calhoun level, but close

The whole thing with Chaney,

Cal went waaay out of his way to call a reporter a 'fucking little Mexican" in the parking lot of the Meadowlands Arena, loud enough to be sure the writer heard him.

then there's the story of him as a Pitt assistant trying to recruit a kid who was leaning toward St. John's by telling him Looie Carnesecca had cancer and wouldn't make it through the kid's 4 years in Queens.

However, he did bring Memphis back to the forefront and got his players to graduate which hadn't always been the case at Memphis. When he got there, the graduation rate was a modest
0%

i really find it odd that Texas hasn't come out and said "BARNES HAS A NEW CONTRACT, HERE IT IS, GO AWAY WOLFPACK".

the fact that its been a week and theres still uncertainty can't be a bad thing for us...

That's completely backwards from everything i've heard

Some donors do, others dont... especially Murphy. Fowler isn't the problem here, so no one on here has the right to criticize him if we don't go after Cal.

I think he's done a wonderful job thus far.

"There are multiple rumors around Raleigh that NC State offered John Calipari the head coaching job late last night and that he has accepted. Let us repeat, these are unsubstantiated rumors that don’t come from our normal sources. But, one source tied to this news is legitimately highly-connected to NC State Basketball."

Quote :
"#

(2) If the rumor about Calipari getting the job is true, then NC State gets to control the public’s perception of the search. If people believe that we are still talking to Rick Barnes up until John Calipari (or any other coach) is formally announced, then said new coach would obviously have been NC State’s first choice (since we chose to move past Barnes while he was still an option for us). This helps our image and the image of the new coach. Brand Management 101.
#

If this continues to develop the way we think, then we could have unofficial confirmation on NC State’s next head basketball coach in the next 24 to 36 hours and potentially have a public announcement on Monday."

Dude, that would be SO awesome if we indeed plan on giving Calipari the job while people still thought that we were talking to Barnes

Calipari was my #1 choice anyhow, he was higher in the rankings all year than Barnes, and he's more charasmatic in my opinion

And to add to what was said earlier, WINNING is always better than LOSING, it's 2006 people, who honestly cares about being clean and respectful as a top priority. Nobody does this day and age anyhow. WE JUST WANT TO WIN!!

Bring on Calipari!

to reply to the thought that Calipari is a "slime ball," here's a little information about him that i find great. not saying he's a saint, but this does paint a different picture.

Quote :
"Early in his tenure at the U of M, Calipari began developing a relationship with Memphis-based FedEx. The overnight courier has employed Memphis student-athletes in its internship program during the past five summers. It is a program where the Tigers gain valuable experience in an area related to their field of study.

Calipari has also founded a program called NetWorks. The program brings together business leaders from throughout the community to network, find employment opportunities and place former U of M players following their playing careers.

Calipari has made several financial contributions to the University and has been honored by the Friends of the Ned McWherter Library on the U of M campus. In April of 2004, Calipari and his family made a $100,000 contribution to help endow athletic scholarships at the University. He also presented the U of M a check for $40,000 which resulted from a partnership between Calipari and Pace Cooper, president and CEO of Cooper Companies, the owner of the restaurant, Cal's Championship Steakhouse in the Hilton East Memphis.

At the conclusion of his first season at Memphis, Calipari joined several area business leaders to form the Y.E.S. Foundation, an organization designed to educate middle school students about the importance of academics and athletics. Y.E.S., an acronym for Youth Education Through Sports, held its first camp on the U of M campus in August of 2001. Over 25 schools are currently taking part in the program which is in its fifth year.

Calipari has also been responsible for raising money and making donations for improvements at the U of M's tennis complex, air conditioning in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and having courts resurfaced for use by Memphis students for outdoor basketball.

Not only did Calipari secure a shoe and apparel contract for the basketball program, he also has helped with similar arrangements for several Olympic sports programs at the University.

A couple of years ago, Calipari teamed up with Philadelphia 76ers star guard Allen Iverson to renovate basketball courts in the community. The courts were dedicated in the Orange Mound community of Memphis as well as a four-plex of courts adjacent to Halle Stadium in southeast Memphis. The first courts built during the continuing project were at two housing projects located near downtown, Foote Homes and Dixie Homes"

Quote :
"He received the Lombardi Award from UNICO National in the summer of 2003. UNICO was founded in 1922 to provide scholarships to worthy students and to give strength and force in fighting discrimination against Italian-Americans. UNICO's Lombardi Award recognized an outstanding individual of Italian-American heritage who is involved in athletics.

In 2004, Calipari was inducted to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and UMass Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also recognized by the West Tennessee Arthritis Foundation and Tennessee Health Care Association for his work and contributions to both organizations."

Quote :
"Off the court, UMass' graduation rate for its basketball players was close to 80 percent."
