SC corners and safeties played lights out on us! Our receivers were no where to be found. Our offensive line looked very suspect and 'should' have things in order before Pittsburgh comes to down. IM GLAD we have to scrub teams next to get our offense in order. The offensive coordinator needs to take the reigns off Wilson some b/c he was def. hesitating plays, which he made soundly last season.
We will be fine in the long run, but yes our biggest two question marks are to fine 1) go to receivers when Owen is being double covered and 2) getting SOLID O-Line protection so Wilson can look downfield..
but Pack Nation we will be ok, it just sucks this one didnt go the other way... 9/4/2009 2:02:02 AM |

yeah, the bunch of us at the bar who are fairly in the know as far as football, and not merely screaming at refs and about adjusting to SC's zone blocking scheme kept talking about SC's secondary's ability to close so quickly--like most SEC teams.
and about how we clearly recruit volleyball players to flank us at wideout. 9/4/2009 7:48:46 AM |

Thoughts on last night's game:
1. Defense was better than I expected and considering how badly we lost the field position battle, giving up just 7 pts was remarkable.
2. Offensive line sucked period.
3. We looked completely unprepared in 1st half.
4. Wilson looked slow and under-threw the WRs on the few deep routes we tried. Glennon has a fucking cannon.
5. Tackling was bad on multiple plays and needs to be more consistent.
6. Missed face mask call was biggest play of the game IMO. 9/4/2009 7:51:58 AM |

Missed face mask, missed pass interference on our first drive and a couple of missed holds when garcia would leave the pocket. Good ole SEC officiating I was happy to see our defense do so well and our O will come around (by the end of the game wilson looked like he was moving quicker) 9/4/2009 7:57:43 AM |

are you serious? the play of the game is when we fumbled on our first play from scrimmage and gave them the ball inside the 20 which resulted in their only points of the game.9/4/2009 8:00:27 AM |

^ Yeah but we had time to recover from that play. The timing of the missed face mask is what makes it more significant IMO. Had the ref not blown that call, we start that drive at the SC 35. Instead we were at mid field, got the PI call, got to the 35 and fizzled. We would have atleast been at the 20 with both calls.
In terms of every play in the game, yeah the Baker fumble was the biggest, but we should have been able to recover. 9/4/2009 8:04:08 AM |

So where's the guarantee that there would be a PI if the refs had called the facemask penalty? You can't assume we would have been down at the 20.
No love for the dropped passes? And I kinda agree with the key play being our first snap/fumble. It probably deflated the entire team... at the very least the fans. Fumble on the first snap and the other team scores. The HERE WE GO AGAIN feeling sets in and remains. 9/4/2009 8:13:10 AM |

I can kind of understand those drops. The last one was a good defensive play and the defender ripped it out of the receiver's hands. One of the others was double coverage and I guess the receiver lost track of the ball cause the damn thing just bounced off his hands. Which the opening fumble, missed calls by the refs, poor oline play, soft defense and wilson trying to stay in the pocket all had a hand in that clusterfuck of a game. 9/4/2009 8:17:53 AM |

Yeah but the problem with that logic is, what do you call our defense? They only scored 7 off of a lucky fumble. Guarantee the USC fans aren't calling it "good". 9/4/2009 8:45:05 AM |

Whoever said the SC secondary was closing fast was right on the money. Any time we had a window of an opening, it would disappear before the ball arrived (and it's not like Wilson can't fire the ball). Not only that -- when we did complete a pass, they were all over us before we could make a move. 9/4/2009 8:46:11 AM |

We drop a few passes. We are a much better team at the beginning of this season than we were at the beginning of last season. Our offense looked fluid at times and we were able to move the chains fairly consistently when we'd get a rythm going. Unlike last year. Just one too many costly mistakes. The penalty on the Spencer catch down the middle, russel throwing over TJ Grahams wrong shoulder as he was streaking down the middle, the fumble, and of course the jay smith catch. We also had a costly holding penalty I remember.
I was actually suprised by our defense. Big improvement from the beginning of last year. Remember they broke in the 2nd half giving up 34 points. Didn't happen tonight, was good to see! Secondary really suprised me...Garcia had a really long time to hold on to the ball several times but couldn't find anyone open down field 9/4/2009 8:46:54 AM |

^ Technically the D did not give up 34 pts last year. 6pts were a result of Evans's horrible, horrible pick 6 to start the 2nd half. Also the score at half last year was 3-0 I think. 9/4/2009 8:56:55 AM |

We definitely beat ourselves last night. Our O has me concerned because their D, while athletic, is really young and was without 2-3 players due to suspension. RW definitely looked slow, our OL got bullyed the whole first half, we had dumb penalties cost us some big plays, and our WRs have stone hands all of a sudden.
The jury is still out on our D for me. I think they played well last night, came up with some huge stops, big turnover by Lemon, but at the same time, USC's offense was suppose to be really bad. They have a sophmore QB(more int's than TDs), freshman RB, their OL gave up the most sacks in college last year, and they only had one returning WR with much experience.
All in all I think the Bible needs to go back to the drawing board and go back to the last 4 regular season games and look at what we did there and go back to that. Let RW play his style instead of turning him into a pocket passer. We have a lot of young talent that showed up last night, just have to hope these guys can keep playing well and getting more experience and that our experienced players(Baker, WRs, OL) can get back to form.
Also, George Bryan needs better routes, not just 3-yard routes on 3rd down.
The next 2 games will hopefully build confidence. 9/4/2009 9:04:33 AM |

I don't understand the whole deal with the coaches neutering RW's play. He's probably only here for this last year and if he gets hurt, so be it. We've got MG and he's probably not as much of a drop-off as Beck or Evans was (knowing full well this is NC State we're talking about) and we'll probably have to use him anyway so... not much to lose... 9/4/2009 9:19:39 AM |

I actually don't feel too bad after watching the 4th quarter. Dropped passes were the key. I think we'll be fine, especially with our kinda friendly schedule.
I had to LOL at the sc fans chanting "SEC." Yeah, they won, but that's like us chanting "ACC" at a basketball game. Yeah, your conference is better, thanks to your hated rivals.

Can't say the D is good just from that game. The usc offensive line was young, their RB was young, their QB went into fetal position every time there was rush, and they still moved the ball on us well for a while. 9/4/2009 9:22:26 AM |

The reason we lost this game is T.O.B. and his stupid fucking ideas. He apparently hasn't worked the the O-line or special teams much at all. They were horrible. But the worst is him forcing RW to be a pocket passer. WTF. RW is not a pocket passer nor do we have the O-line to support a pocket passer. T.O.B. is a damn moron for doing what he's done and he is the reason we lost. SO FUCK YOU T.O.B.
Quote : | "He was having an off night though. Not really tucking it an running like he used to." |
RW didn't have an off night. THE FUCKING COACHES HAVE CASTRATED HIS GAME. No longer does he look at WR1, WR2, then scramble, but he looks for WR1-WR4 and then doesn't have time to get out of the pocket. He's been told to sit in the pocket and not to make things happen.

Well, right. By off I mean he wasn't playing like he used to. You can blame that on whatever. I think it had 80% to do with the coaches telling him that he shouldn't be running as much (at all) and 20% to do with the fact that, honestly, he just doesn't look the same as last year. Could just be a first game thing though. 9/4/2009 10:20:57 AM |

i was only able to see the first and fourth quarters, and i didn't see that RW actually had time to go thru his progressions. They basically turned Norwood loose on him. I think the fumble did a psych job on the offense; what happened to Andrew Wallace on those two plays back to back? One negated a 38yd pass, and the other he jumped offsides as soon as he became set like he was full of the emotion 9/4/2009 10:24:10 AM |

There were two drops that really bugged me. There was the double coverage int he end zone and then the bobble when our receiver (can't remember who) was running down the sideline.
In both cases, it was remarkable that the receivers were in place to make those catches...getting in position was the hardest part. Actually catching the ball should have been easy at that point, because both of them had it in their hands and just had to pull it in or clasp down.9/4/2009 10:36:07 AM |
