I will never, ever, ever, ever understand the idea of trying to draw charges on a 2 on 1 break as the last defender. If called correctly, you will almost never be able to get position and will be moving horizontally. Play some fucking real defense.

It's pussy basketball and it should never be rewarded.

^ to be fair, I think a lot of it has to do with how ordinary they were OOC and the fact that the ACC simply isn't very good this year.

You would rather take a defensive foul 95% of the time trying to block a shot playing "real defense" than putting the ref in position to make a 50/50 call that results in no basket AND a foul on the offensive player? Really?

I've gone over this a thousand times and it's why the NBA is such a dramatically better brand of basketball than college. Coaches don't intimidate the refs into bailing out bad defense. Not a single one of those "charges" on EITHER team are called if the game is called legitimately. It's bad defense. Period. I don't care if you get the call.

I don't understand how anyone can think it's acceptable for a 6'10" white guy to be flopping left and right instead of using his body to play defense. And "95%?" Come on. That isn't even close to true and you know it. Especially on the situations I'm talking about.

And fwiw, Zeller did this twice tonight. Fuck him for doing that, too. And I don't get nearly uptight about Duke as I did in the past. They aren't nearly as unlikable now that they recruit athletic guys who play the sport right again.

I'll be the first to admit, I know nothing about basketball or its strategies. That said, in the first half, even second half to a lesser degree, Duke reminded me of State. Get down by about 6 points, start to panic, then jack up 3s over, and over, and over, and over again. The only difference is that they didn't wait until the last 5 seconds of the shot clock before they shot each time.

I guess the shots eventually started falling for them, but it was starting to piss me off. They probably never would have worked themselves in that 14/16 point deficit if they just tried to take a higher percentage shot in place of half of those 3s they took in the first half. Heck at one point I found myself wishing they'd do away with the 3 point shot in college just so I could see something different on a possession.

But again, I know nothing about the intricacies of the sport. Duke lives and dies by the three pointer I guess.

There is a pretty interesting read about Duke changing the program to try to be more likable and not as old-fashioned.

It is one part recruiting, one coaching and even some marketing. I was at the first Countdown to Craziness and it was a dramatic shift to letting the players be college kids and have fun.
