i wouldnt be upset if we fired rivera and hired reid, i think reid is one of the best pro coaches in the last 10 years, but i see rivera staying another year...if he can't go 9-7 or better next year, get rid of him...if he can, and more importantly if his playcalling resembles the last month or two all next year as opposed to some of his questionable clock management / timeout usage/misusage / prevent defense / being too passive on 4th and 1, i think he deserves a 3rd season 12/30/2012 4:02:58 PM |

TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148440 Posts user info edit post |
this year and last year both, he's coached better once the playoffs were an afterthought, i agree
but maybe he's learned he needs to coach the same way in week 1, as week 14 with no chance of the postseason
unless somebody like Cowher or Gruden wants the job, i just dont like firing him for another unproven coordinator
you can't argue with how much improved the defense has been over the last couple months, and i dont expect most coordinators to immediately learn to go from overseeing 4 coaches and 20 something players to 8 coaches and 53

im okay with giving him one more year, but im not terribly optimistic. The improvement on defense this year and our decent offense despite clear personnel issues makes me think he can get it done schematically, but he makes some really questionable in game decisions.
Being ranked 31st in special teams after being 32nd by a mile the year before is definitely concerning. Get someone who knows what the fuck they are doing please 12/30/2012 4:08:48 PM |

I doubt they'd hire an unproven coordinator over an established head coach again
I don't want to waste another year of Cam to see if he's maybe learned how to be a head coach 12/30/2012 4:09:42 PM |

also, while I place blame of losing the first Atlanta game, second Tampa game, etc on Rivera, I put the Seattle game, Bears game on Cam
and Cam, who is a 23-year old 2nd year player, has also looked much improved both physically and mentally the last couple months
I wish this game today had playoff implications, but I also don't want to completely push the reset button after what we've seen since early November

when is the last time Big Cat hired an established head coach? Siefert? that didn't end well

"easily made the playoffs"?
THat team last year was fucking terrible and going 6-10 with the worst defense ive ever seen should be lauded.
We had a really tough schedule this year and it took some time for Cam to learn how to play against defenses that had made adjustments against him. Cant put this season all on Rivera. 12/30/2012 4:59:55 PM |

Another great year by the Carolina 7-9ers
1995 1997 2000 2002 2004 2007 2012
And yes, Rivera will be back next year. General rule is take anything Michael Lombardi says and the opposite will happen. 12/31/2012 12:03:05 AM |

Bill O'Brien is staying at PSU. Could see both of the Kelly's end up in the NFL next year, definitely Chip though.
Would love to hire Lovie Smith...as a DC. Lovie is a great defensive coach, but he's made some lame-brain decisions hiring OC's that didn't mesh well with him or his personnel, so why not bring him in as a DC? I understand he MIGHT get some HC looks, but I think he ends up as a DC for a couple of years before he takes over a team again. And I'd much rather have him as a DC than McDermott. 1/4/2013 8:19:17 AM |

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/04/could-cowher-become-the-coach-in-carolina/
Quote : | "Now that we’re mainstream (or something close to it), we’re careful (or at least more careful) about trafficking in rumors. But when there’s a juicy rumor that is making the rounds in league circles, it’s hard to ignore it.
The latest isn’t a rumor as much as it’s a hunch by someone with close ties to the team Bill Cowher coached from 1992 through 2006. But it’s worth pointing it out, primarily because it’s very intriguing.
The source has a hunch (and, again, it’s just a hunch) that Cowher could be the next coach of the Panthers.
Cowher has previously been linked to the Panthers, primarily because he moved to North Carolina after resigning as coach of the Steelers. But now that he has been out of the game for six years, there’s a prevailing sense that Cowher is done coaching.
Still, he’s never publicly declared that he’s done. And with Panthers owner Jerry Richardson openly hoping to emulate the Rooneys, what better way than to hire Bill Cowher?
And now that Chan Gailey (the man Cowher endorsed to take over in Pittsburgh) now available to be hired, along with guys like Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm, it could be the best way to get the most out of Cam Newton." |

Even though I think Rivera deserved a 3rd season, for those of you who want him fired after 2 seasons, who would you have wanted us to bring in, and would you have been content with the new coach blowing 2 more seasons of Cam while learning to be an NFL head coach? 1/5/2013 2:40:49 PM |
Ribs All American 10713 Posts user info edit post |
You don't have to have another guy picked out to be able to say that Ron Rivera is bad coach and mediocre on his BEST days. Personally though, I would have been quite content with Whisenhunt or Arians.
In two seasons, I can't think of one game where I can legitimately say that Rivera and his staff have outcoached another sideline. However, I can think of quite a few times where it was obvious Rivera has been outcoached by another sideline. Of the top of my head, what is he like 2-12 in one score games? That is embarrassingly ridiculous.
The KC lost should have meant an automatic axe for him.
[Edited on January 5, 2013 at 3:36 PM. Reason : On the flipside, are you content to waste 2 more years of Cam with RR's mediocre coaching?] 1/5/2013 3:34:05 PM |

if every coach with mediocre results after 2 years got fired, UNC would've fired Dean Smith and Duke would've fired Coach K
and who knows how good Jason Campbell could've been if he didn't get a new offensive coordinator for like 6 seasons straight
theres something to be said for building continuity and not blowing everything up every couple years
that said, if we dont make the playoffs next year, i think he should be gone
unless theres some freak scenario where we go like 11-5 and somehow miss out like the Pats did a few years back with Cassel

After two seasons, all I've seen are a pattern of highly questionable in-game decisions and winning AFTER everything to play for is already gone. He's literally never won a game that really and truly mattered when the season was still up for grabs.1/5/2013 3:55:53 PM |
