That was an awesome game. Fun game to be at with a great atmosphere. I was really impressed with our ability to kill off 2 minutes of a 5 on 3 in the second period. The Canes seem to be rolling again!!!

What a fucking cheap shot. Cole got boarded head first, and he looks hurt pretty bad. I would not be surprised if he has a concussion.

Quote : | "PITTSBURGH — After scoring twice to reach the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career, Carolina Hurricanes forward Erik Cole was hospitalized with a neck injury Saturday night when the Pittsburgh Penguins' Brooks Orpik checked him head-first into the boards early in the third period.
Orpik was ejected from the game. Cole left the ice under his own power, but hunched over and in visible pain.
A team spokesman refused to disclose any information about Cole’s injury or the hospital to which he was admitted, but a nursing supervisor at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital confirmed Cole was being evaluated there.
Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said Cole’s condition was “unsure at this point,” although Laviolette said Cole had feeling and movement in his extremities.
Cole was coming to a stop along the boards near the right circle when Orpik hit him from behind as Cole appeared to lose his footing and crashed face-first into the boards.
Hurricanes defenseman Bret Hedican was the first to reach Cole after the hit.
“It was one of the worst hits I’ve seen in a long time,”
Hedican said. “The guy can’t defend himself. He’s three feet from the boards and he gets run from behind. I almost thought he broke his neck. It was terrible. I panicked, to be honest with you.”
Cole is the Hurricanes' second-leading goal-scorer with 30 goals and is tied for second in points with 60." |

I was pretty sure Cole had broken his neck, too.
Hope he's all right.
Unfortunately, we won't play Pittsburgh again this year, so Orpik won't get what he deserves. At the same time, I'm not sure we have anyone short of Ward or Craig Adams who could give it to him anyway. 3/5/2006 12:20:46 AM |

taking away someone on his way to a 40 goal season is a huge blow, this is awful
weight better so something, and we should pray for a miracle to have cole back in shape by playoff time assuming his neck is not broken. 3/5/2006 12:56:41 AM |

Erik Cole's season may be over.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=157284&hubname=
Quote : | "The Carolina Hurricanes have suffered a setback to their aspirations to win the Stanley Cup because winger Erik Cole has suffered a significant neck injury.
Sources tell TSN that while the Hurricanes are still waiting for the official medical report from a Pittsburgh hospital, where Cole spent Saturday night after being hit from behind by Penguin defenceman Brooks Orpik, the prognosis is not good and that Cole is likely to be sidelined a minimum of two months, perhaps even longer than that.
''It's a pretty serious neck injury, it looks like a fracture,'' a source told TSN. ''He's going to be out for a significant period of time.''
Orpik’s immediate future with the Penguins will be decided by the NHL, which is likely to suspend the Pittsburgh blueliner who was assessed a five-minute boarding major at 5:18 of the third period. Earlier in the game, Cole had scored a pair of goals, his 29th and 30th goals of the season, to go with 30 assists, and a plus-20 rating. Cole, along with centre Eric Staal, has been one of the Canes’ premier players this season.
The Hurricanes won't be able to effectively replace Cole in their lineup – he played on the team’s top line with Staal and Cory Stillman – but the Hurricanes have recalled winger Andrew Ladd, who has been playing well in the minors.
Veteran Doug Weight will move onto the top line with Staal and Stillman while Ladd will move into Weight’s position on a line with Rod Brind’Amour and Jason Williams.
In the good news department, Carolina is closer to getting centre Josef Vasicek back from reconstructive knee surgery. He's skating again and should be back in the Canes' lineup well before the end of the regular season.
Cole's injury, though, will no doubt cause the Hurricanes to look at potential replacements via the trade market before Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline for making moves." |

it sounds really bad to me. I hope it is something that he will be able to overcome eventually, if not in the next few months, then by next season, or ever for that matter. He was going to get paid big after the season, whether by us or another team. Orprick is a piece of shit, and he had better get more than damn game or 2 suspension. Especially if the ass doesnt come out and apologize. I cant stand this at all. I truly feel awful for Erik. The team was all happy and fun and games, dominating the league... and then this punk from a cellar-dweller team comes and ruins it all.
Doug Weight better earn his flags here, and I hope we can see Cole back on the ice in the future. He was really playing inspired this year for both us and the US.
Long I know, but this shit is really getting to me. 3/5/2006 1:47:24 PM |

The Hurricanes have posted an item on their site now:
Quote : | " COLE TO MISS AT LEAST 6-8 WEEKS WITH FRACTURED VERTEBRA TERRELL WILLIAMS
Forward Andrew Ladd to be recalled from Lowell
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 5, 2006
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Erik Cole has a compression fracture in a vertebra in his neck and is expected to miss at least the remainder of the regular season. Forward Andrew Ladd will be recalled from Lowell of the American Hockey League tonight and will be available to play Monday night in New York against the Rangers.
Cole sustained the injury when he was boarded from behind by Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik with 5:18 left in the Hurricanes’ 7-5 victory Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Cole was released from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh today and flown back to Raleigh for examination by Dr. Douglas Martini. Prior to the injury, the Oswego, NY, native had established career highs in goals (30), assists (30) and points (60). He currently ranks tied for second on the Hurricanes in scoring and goals. He ranks tied for second in the NHL in game-winning goals (8) and tenth among league forwards in hits (123).
Ladd, 20, is in his first professional season and has played in 17 games with Carolina, notching six goals and two assists (8 points). The Maple Ridge, B.C., native has 11 goals and eight assists (19 points) in 25 AHL games this season with Lowell. Carolina selected Ladd in the first round, fourth overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
The Carolina Hurricanes visit the New York Rangers Monday night at Madison Square Garden (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network) and will also travel to Philadelphia and Florida before returning home to face the Rangers at the RBC Center on Tuesday, March 14. Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes games at the RBC Center can be purchased at the RBC Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, by calling 919-834-4000 or via CarolinaHurricanes.com. For information on Hurricanes season-ticket packages and mini-season ticket plans, please call 1-866-NHL-CANES. " |

These are things you have to think about! If I put all that work in and didn't get my name on the cup, I'd probably hire someone to show up on Orpik's doorstep with a hockey stick and a lesson he wouldn't soon forget 3/5/2006 3:05:26 PM |

although i really like ladd especially for the physical side of his play i think coles speed and ability to bring the puck up will be missed heavily
^also i think weights abilty to bring the puck up and set up staal is why he got moved up 3/5/2006 9:51:43 PM |

If Doug Weight could set up Staal, he'd have assisted on one of the six goals that Staal has scored since Weight has dressed as a Hurricane.
Ladd is a garbage goal master. As much as they're both power forwards, he can't play Cole's game.
If anything good comes of this, it's that when Big Joe comes back, at least he'll have a slot.
What I'm really looking forward to is the end of the NCAA season, when Jack Johnson becomes a Hurricane just in time for the playoffs. 3/6/2006 12:04:05 AM |
