Eddie Johnson out with a hamstring injury???? No he isn't our best forward right now, but at some point the injuries need to stop, so we can actually have 11 guys who are healthy enough to play. 5/13/2010 3:11:02 AM |

What I want to know is if a club team has the ability to prevent a player from playing for their national team. I thought that ultimately, it is not their decision. I though there was a precedent to this, but I can't remember it for the life of me. 5/13/2010 9:50:48 AM |

Clubs are required to release players for official FIFA international match days. If the game isn't played on an official FIFA international match day then the national team coaches have to beg the clubs for players, or just take the shit players that won't see playing time with their club anyway.5/13/2010 11:50:16 AM |

No doubt about that. On big soccer I did read something about the clubs have the rights to the players until the season is over. With that being said, Eddie Johnson made the 30 man roster and then got hurt in a game for his club team the next day.

Quote : | "You gotta be kidding me, asking for a "link" like you've never heard any Adu hype." |
That's my bad on this one, I read it as "as many of you would have liked to believe" not "many would have liked you to believe." Anybody who believed any of that was a dumb ass though.
Quote : | "The dude is just not that good. It was all hype." |
... comes off to me as "fuck Adu he sucks" in the context of discussing his place on the USMNT for the future. So you're contradicting yourself when he say he was "all hype" but then say he has "raw ability to become a prominent player." So which is it? If he has raw ability, wouldn't an attitude change/coaching/proper training make him a good player?5/14/2010 11:35:27 AM |
elduderino All American 4343 Posts user info edit post |
I think you misinterpreted. I said he is "just not that good". I meant for "that" = the amount of goodness he was hyped to be. Perhaps it should have been italicized. He was never a Pele Jr and never will be. Then I go on to say he's 20 years old and can still become a better player, but I would not put him in the national team now. So in a way I'm still saying he's not that good, yes. Not good enough for our national team as of now.
Are you saying you disagree with that? He should be there? Who would you get rid of? I don't see how that's saying "fuck Adu he sucks".
And lulz at the ESPN commercial. I bet 80% of the nation wouldn't get it.

Okay, fair enough... I get what you're saying now.
But who knows if he's good enough for our national team as of now? How many opportunities has he had? He proved he could hang in youth competitions, he played a vital role in Olympic qualifying and in the Olympics themselves, I thought he was very good in the friendly against Spain, couldn't tell much from his games against scrubs in WCQ, and he never played in the CC last summer.
Who would I get rid of? Findley, Kljestan, Johnson, Pearce, Rogers. Bradley wants to talk about being in-form and none of those guys are at the moment (in MLS!) except for Johnson but I've had enough of him with the national team. He's had his chances with the US and he never shows up. Those guys are never going to make a difference on the national stage and Adu, based on making a difference for various levels of national teams in the past, MIGHT. Sure, it might not make a difference for this summer's World Cup but I don't get why Bradley wants to trot out these same fuck faces only to have nothing to show for it. At least Adu would get more experience training and preparing with the best players our country has to offer instead of maybe getting a minute here and there in some friendly against some crappy team.
It's not a big deal but I don't think he should be judged by not living up to everybody else's expectations. He's still a better player than Kljestan or Rogers will ever be, in my opinion.

Yeah, maybe he would be on par with Kljestan or Rogers, but I doubt either of those guys make the team. He's never done anything to prove he's significantly better than those two. The reason they're at the camp is because Bradley has a hard on for them, especially Kljestan, not because they have any soccer merit. Pearce is up for an entirely different position, as are Findley and Johnson (strikers as opposed to attacking midfielders). From what I've seen even Johnson is still better (despite choking on the big stage) than Adu, not to mention he's playing a position where we have absolutely nothing on the depth chart. Like I said before, would you take Adu in place of Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley, or Feilhaber? I sure as hell wouldn't.
When it comes to Adu, from Bradley's perspective, I think he sees the defensive liability that he is. If he was a more threatening player, it might be a trade off that you're willing to make. I don't think he's at that point, yet.
This is the World Cup. It's not a place to cultivate talent. It's a place where you bring people in who can impact your team. As of now I'd group Adu in with Kljestan and Rogers. Fringe players who, even if they made the team, probably wouldn't see any time anyway. 5/14/2010 6:41:02 PM |
McWinger03 All American 1055 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not surprised with adu not making the team, but the last couple of times he played with the US, he hadn't played in like 2 years at his club. So its obvious why he wasn't playing well. Now that he has some match practice and has played well for a european team throughout the season, he must be better.
Adu has a shit ton more upside than kjlestan and all those other crappy mids. He has shown on every level that he's the type of player that we're missing, someone who will create and take on defenders. I don't see the harm in having him on the bench. He would be a really good spark off the bench if we're down. 5/14/2010 6:53:49 PM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
^^ yeah, so if you're bringing guys that will impact the team, why would you bring in Kljestan, Pearce, Johnson, etc when it's obvious they won't? And since we're bringing 30 guys and these fringe players won't make a roster, why not bring in Adu?
No, I wouldn't take Adu in place of all those guys but that's not the point. The point is the other guys have no reason to get another a chance to make it - they haven't done it in the past and in their current form, they're not going to do it in this camp. When has Adu just flat out proved he wasn't worth it for the national team? He hasn't yet so I think he deserves an opportunity instead of those hacks.
Taking 4 forwards just to have 4 forwards is dumb. And I guess I should have included Bedoya in the list of people I would have taken Adu over because seriously, what the hell? He may end up being awesome eventually but is there ANY chance he'll make the final roster? Any more than Adu would've had?

I already told you why. Sweatpants has a hard on for these guys. I don't mind giving him a shot over them. At the end of the day it's all the same, he's going to barely make the team and not play or just not make the team. I would rather see him there than Kljestan if only because he has more years ahead of him, but I'm not going to stress about bench players. You've admitted he wouldn't play in place of those four midfielders, and those are the guys that he would have to bump off. Again it seems like you're proposing I'm all "Fuck Freddy" when my stance is more "Freddy who?". I really don't care about the fringe. I hope Adu plays his ass off for his club within the next four years and ends up in the mix for a starting job. Then I will start caring about Freddy Adu.
Also, I disagree about Bedoya. I think his stock is rising. It may have been a little bit early, but from what I've seen of him he looks like he can hang on the international level. FWIW, I can't say that I've seen better from Adu either.5/15/2010 12:23:17 AM |

im not sure why you guys are comparing rogers with adu and klestjan...rogers is an out and out winger and hes on this 30 man squad because we have no good wingers. the other 2 play pretty much the same position though so it makes sense to compare them 5/15/2010 12:49:15 AM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not comparing them individually, I'm comparing the worth of using a roster spot on them.
yeah, I know why Bradley picked them too and that's kind of my problem (because other than Davies, the rest of the 20-22 picked itself so how tough was it exactly for him to pick 30 guys). I'm not all worried about the fringe either but I would hope our coaching staff is and that's why this move is completely short-sighted and another example of why I don't think Bradley should be around much longer
I didn't mean to hate on Bedoya because I know absolutely nothing about him. But what have you seen from him? How is Adu owning a U21 WC or being a key part of the Olympic team not worth more than a couple of caps from Bedoya? 5/15/2010 12:11:11 PM |
elduderino All American 4343 Posts user info edit post |
Bedoya held his own against the Netherlands. He was challenging the likes of Schneider and drew a free kick (inches from being a penalty). He seemed to be in the right position most of the time, which is more than I can say about a lot of our guys. However, I did point out it may have been to early to jump on the Bedoya bandwagon. He has been playing a full 90 minutes a game since early in the season too, which is noteworthy.
U21 doesn't speak too much to me. Tournaments, in general, don't. I think Adu screwed himself by choosing to go to a club like Benfica. You may be forgetting just up until a few months ago the guy had a long spell on three clubs' benches. If he can continue good form with Aris he should definitely get some looks in the future. Too little too late is probably the best way to describe his position.
And I'm done with the Adu talk. I want to focus on people who will be at the World Cup and continue to complain about Davies and Sweatpants. 5/15/2010 7:06:13 PM |

hi to being in-form and getting games and all that horseshit
And I'm not hating on Oneywu for the same reason you shouldn't hate on Adu. Prominent European club says, "hey we think you're good and we're going to pay you a lot of money but we can't guarantee your playing time," do you really expect them to say, "Nah fuck off I'm going to go to Belgium instead"
there's more than "damn I better go somewhere where I can get a lot of games under my belt so Bob fucking Bradley will think I'm in form." It's all about getting paid first
and secondly, what did you want Adu to do instead? Stay in Salt Lake? Like that would have been a better option than going to a club like Benfica?

Pretty much what I would've said. Dude was a brick wall at Standard and basically willed himself a Milan contract. He's been injured most of the time at Milan, so who knows if he would have ever gotten onto the field. I'm not so sure it was a great idea to go to Milan, but Nesta's 36 and prone to injury, so he might get to see some of the field if he can stay fit himself.
^
I think the difference is that Gooch played into a spot on Milan while Benfica took a chance on a really good prospect. I think you're trying to compare apples and oranges. Gooch was already national team caliber talent. Adu was upcoming. Apples and oranges.

I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, as it pertains to this discussion. who cares about their established reps with national teams? Adu wanted a higher level of training/competition (and more money) so he went to Benfica. The decision to go wasn't flawed, it was his attitude/work ethic when he got there that forced him out to other bad situations, which made it even worse
