We beat ourselves

However I come out of this game with a lot more optimism about the season than after last year's opener

We'll get our swagger back over the next couple weeks, then Pitt will be another good game

Exactly...anyone who says we were completely outclassed is full of shit. The score was 7-3 remember? Neither team played great. We don't have any exceptional wideouts. We knew this. But we had opportunities that we couldn't convert on. Their secondary played well, RW had time at times and had open receivers down the field at times. Due to a penalty or a drop, we just couldn't convert. It makes me feel better knowing all that pressure coming from RWs blind side and the two penalties that cost us at least 50 yds of offense (literally) was due to a redshirt freshman who wasn't supposed to be in the game.

Russel did not look scared or jittery to me. You must have been watching another game. He was stepping up into the pocket and making throws in as much rhythm as he could when he had open receivers and time.

I don't mind the short passes on 3rd and long. It was a close game that could be won with one possession. All of those 3-4 yd passes were to check down receivers (aka George Brian or the back). I will take that any day over a forced interception and running draw plays all night long.

Glad to see there are people with sense left...we had every opportunity to win that game and had several big plays or big play opportunities that we couldn't quite convert on.

That on a 3rd and long gets a :carl face: especially when wilson was looking at him the whole time. And we showed glimpses of potential. Hopefully the cobwebs wear off over the next 2 games and wilson is giving the chance to actually make plays cause I'm sure the pitt game is going to be a challenge.

LOL Yup.

After the fumble and 20 more minutes of failsauce on both teams' parts I kinda hoped SC would open up on us so I could go do something else. It was 3 excruciating hours of "C'mon guys, their shitty offense and our defense is keeping you in this game. Just make one play happen!" and then nothing.

after the pitt game we will be able to answer two questions.

was that game just an offensive fluke?

is our defense really good?

if both of those are NO then it will be a loong season.

I do too, but I think Florida, Bama, and pretty much everyone else on their schedule won't allow that

My thoughts and observations

Dana Bible needs to take the leash off of Russell Wilson, I know they are trying to preserve his health but he looked tentative.

The OLine looked lost especially Wallace and his back to back penalties. The Tackles were slow reacting to SC's speedy ends.

TJ looked slow don't know if he put on muscle or what.

The D looked pretty good at bending and not breaking considering there only score came from an extremely short field.

The offense better find its rhythym in these next 2 games or we are in trouble.

SEC officials missed some pretty blatant calls on SC the two big penalties they called were blatant but they missed an obvious call.

South Carolina also beat themselves. They had a turnover on our side of the field (remember, we got our only points off that turnover) and a penalty that called back a sure touchdown (he did push off, but if Garcia didn't underthrow, he wouldn't have had to push off). Not to mention two botched field goals.

Unfortunately the better team won last night...and it sucks, but I don't think USC is that good.

everyone trying to put all the blame on the WRs for the drops mustve only been half watching the game. most of RWs deep passes were underthrown. not to the extent that the shitty SoCar QB underthrew that offensive PI early in the game, but enough that it makes the play difficult for the WR. With that said, Jay Smith has to catch the TD and Williams had awful positioning on 4th down. Now Wilson was under heavy pressure all night, so it's hard to ask for much more from him...especially if he's going to look that slow against an SEC team and TOB/Bible have him only using 60% of his ability

It's not beating yourself when your INT is the result of an outstanding play by the defense (specifically, Lemon). Beating yourself is fumbling on the opening play, having multiple momentum-killing penalties, and dropping passes. And our CB had great coverage on the deep route -- he pulled up because the ball was underthrown, not because he was beaten. I will give you that South Carolina's kicker was helping us out though.

I don't think SC is better than us -- we played awful and still should/could have won at the end. They just limited their screwups.

This is the challenge with opening against a stronger opponent vs. a weaker 1AA or something like that. Not an easy thing to do to "work out the kinks" against an SEC opponent. Good thing is we got 2 games where we should be able to get things clicking I hope.

Maybe they tried and I missed it, but I wish they would have done some more screens to try to slow up that rush off the edge a bit.

I remember thinking the same thing as we came out of that timeout and ran Washington again on the same play that we'd run the prior two plays. Granted those two plays worked well, but you had to know that SC was going to be ready for it following a timeout. I think that 1st down following the TO would have been perfect for a shot down field.

i for one was praying we'd throw the ball :x

that may have been one of the most boring uneventful football games i've seen in a very long time

oh and to like the 20 or so people wearing red in the student section way to be that guy... overall I thought it went over really well. I'm glad we didn't fuck it up.

as much improvement we have made year to year, it's still painfully clear that national relevance for this program is still years away

When a 300 lbs D linemen is running down Russell Wilson in high gear you know you are in some trouble.

Was Russell wilson slower or was USC's defense that fast?

There is alot to take out of this game comparing the defenses size and depth.

And how can you actually tell how good our offense is when their secondary was all over our receivers? Hard to tell where we really stand.

We play in the ACC, thankfully... and not the SEC. We might be Top 10 in that conference. Might.

We'll probably be Top 4 in ours...

the thing that really sucks about it is that this game was so sloppy on both ends that we really get no idea how good the team is until the pitt game

aside from the fact that RW has never been a speedster like a Mike Vick, lots of it last night was just situational and missed assignments...its pretty much impossible for RW to get away from a fast defensive end, when the DE gets a 10 step head start and is already at full speed when RW starts to scramble...USC's defense is fast though, but half the time an O-lineman (or RB) would miss a block and by the time Wilson realized someone was after him, they were already at full speed and he didnt have a chance

we should have been blown out straight up. luckily our D showed up and combined with some USC miscues we stayed in the game. the 2 biggest things that bother me about this game are that we didnt take advantage of ONE opportunity. secondly our O tackles were fucking SHIT

was anyone in South end zone where the like 35 year old SC fan came over like 10 feet into our section and just stood there with his hands on his hips after the long bomb that ended the game?

i just started laughing because some students just jumped in his face and basically forced him back to the south carolina section.

Exactly...you do the wave when theres a rain delay (NASCAR), or its a complete blowout....NOT when its the fourth quarter, your team is down by 4 and in the opponents territory. God I cant stand that shit.
