Thought he was talking about Baylor until the last sentence... surely they're not afraid of their non-rivals bringing in some good players...

Quote :
"First and foremost - congrats to Duke for winning. I hate you Rivers, but you deserve all the credit in the world for draining that shot as a Freshman in our house over a 7 footer with no time on the clock when your own team-mate is yelling at you to drive.

Now that I have that out of the way...

I was at the game. This is not to brag, but I say it b/c it's relevant to my post. Another thing that’s relevant, I’m a talented B2B salesperson. Meaning, I can say things to people, or give them a look, or ask them a question that ultimately generates the desired action that I’m looking for, out of them. Again not bragging, but relevant here.

Watching Duke on TV is not the same as watching them in person. Their entire team and staff is trained how to “sell” to the referees. In my business world I don’t say ‘manipulate’ I say “sell,” it makes me feel better. But in short – I’m confident that I could get referees to give my team favorable treatment given 2 hours on a sideline. Not bragging, but I’m good at it and I know how to do it. Guess who else knows how to do this REALLY well? That’s right, K is very very very good and I wish I could hire him on my sales team.

So, why does K “sell” to the referees? Is he a cheater or an awful bad horrible person? No, he is a winner and he’s found a way to get an edge and help his team win. K learned a long time ago that referees will provide 'make up calls' when he sells to them, and thousands of refs have positively reinforced this over the years. More recently, he's indoctrinated his staff and players to this mantra and it's abundantly clear when you watch them in person. ESPECIALLY when they are behind or in trouble or against an opponent they cannot beat. They need an edge and they use these tactics, and they do it very well.

So, hats off to Duke for finding an edge and exploiting it. Honestly, it reminds me of 4 Corners, we found a loophole in the game that allowed us to beat teams that were better than us. But, I think we can all agree amongst friends, 4 corners temporarily hurt the game of college basketball. Winning 10 – 8 or 7 – 5 was not really proving we were the better team. So a rule was put in place to stop teams from using 4 Corners (i.e. the shot clock).

Why in the heck hasn't someone with power (see: not us) either a) called Duke out on their ‘selling’ tactics and/or b) suggested new rules to prevent teams from doing it?

Here are some examples of Duke’s sales tactics, there are many but here’s a few:

-All players and staff know refs by their first name, and refer to them openly during live play and dead balls.
-All players and coaches work hard to establish relationships with refs, earn their trust, learn thing about them, and they know each ref’s “style.”
-During every single time-out a member of Duke’s staff is talking to a Referee. It's not always about the game, it might be about the weather or their children or cheerleaders, etc. Building rapport. Earning trust.
-K knows Ref rotations, when a ref makes a questionable call, he waits for them to rotate to his sideline, and then he attacks to get his edge. He also knows what ‘attack’ method works best on which ref (some he yells, some he jokes, some he just stares, etc)
-Last night, with 10 mins left, during each time out on the first horn (warning 30 seconds before you need to take court) Duke players all took the floor, fanned out and they each began talking to a ref. Is this a coincidence that all the strange calls happened with 10 mins or less to go? Quite possibly, who knows, but my question is why are we even in a position to ask this question?

THIS HAS TO STOP

It seems simple rules would help. We will never get them to stop flopping. Nor will we get their shooters to stop the JJ leg kick to draw a foul. But why can't we do the following:

1) No player may speak to a referee during the course of a game
2) No coach can speak to a referee unless it is during a dead ball, at midcourt, with the other coach present
3) First offense is a warning and second offense is a technical foul

That’s it. You cannot talk to a ref, at all, unless you are the head coach and the other head coach is present. This removes ‘sales’ from college basketball and levels the playing field.

Again, not going to start a crazy thread about refs being the reason we lost to Duke last night, because I do NOT believe that to be true. But when is College Basketball nation going to stop allowing Duke to use sales tactics to manipulate refs into getting favorable calls? This is running our game. Level the playing field and let’s play. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, then you’ve never seen Duke play a game in-person when they are behind or in threat of losing a game."

tl;dr: check the bolded part...it's this guy's proposed rule changes.

"The whole "grab a coin/dollar off the top of the backboard" is an anecdote that has been attributed to many players with freakish verticals, but in Thompson's case I do not believe that ever happened.
I have never seen confirmed footage of ANYONE being able to do this, actually.

The top of the backboard is 13 feet above the floor. Let's assume Thompson was 6'4, and let's give him a reaching height of 8'4 (reaching height is roughly about 2 feet above a player's height). That would mean he would have to jump 56 inches just to get even with the top of the backboard. Naturally, he would have to jump even higher to pick a quarter off the top of it (assuming the quarter isn't dangling over the edge).

Thompson's vertical was reportedly measured at 44 inches - which I assume is either standing or a one step hop. But even with a running start, he's not getting up a full foot (or more) higher."

His clear bias against us is just too distracting to ignore any more.

My suggestion is that your comments be brief, cordial and correct. Blowhards and screamers they'll ignore. Thoughtful, courteous and respectful feedback perhaps will be acted upon favorably ....

^ with you on that. I think a better question to ask would be in they could stay in a game with the Euro professional teams. The answer to that is of course no, a euro pro team would probably still wipe their collective ass with them, but still it'd be a more worthwhile debate
