classic 2011-2012 Action Cats gameplan, inherently built for losses...
offense spends 2 nanoseconds on the grass, scores early and often, wears down own D which is chronically thin,, opposing team acquires and retains momentum, thus winning.
our only hope is that we're playing TB 12/4/2011 1:32:43 PM |

can someone with ESPN insider post this article? about why Dalton should get ROY over Newton...
may be a homer here, but Cam is responsible for way more TDs than Dalton. fuck that read-headed cunt with the benefit of a good defense. 12/4/2011 5:08:47 PM |

Quote : | "As we head into the homestretch of the NFL's regular season, a few things seem like near certainties: Aaron Rodgers will win the MVP award, the Green Bay Packers will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC and the Indianapolis Colts will finish with the worst record in the league and thus have dibs on drafting Andrew Luck.
Another item that seems like it should fit into that list is Cam Newton winning the Rookie of the Year award. After all, he is on pace to throw for more yards than any other rookie quarterback in NFL history and has a good shot at breaking the season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
Those numbers are certainly prolific, but if one desires quality over quantity, Newton should not be considered the front-runner for this award.
That honor would go to Andy Dalton, as a detailed tape review and metric analysis indicate Dalton's numbers are better than Newton's in a variety of ways.
Comparing the rookies
Dalton's and Newton's YPA by length of pass Route Depth Dalton Newton Medium (11-19 yards) 9.7 8.7 Deep (20-29 yards) 15.9 12.9 Bomb (30+ yards) 19.2 13.1 Vertical (11+ yards) 12.7 10.4 Stretch Vertical (20+ yards) 17.4 12.9
Let's start with some statistical basics. (Note: all yards per attempt -- YPA -- totals include attempts and yardage for penalties such as pass interference, defensive holding, illegal contact, etc.)
Newton does top Dalton in the aforementioned season-long passing and rushing yardage categories and has the lead in short pass YPA (6.3 for Newton vs. 5.1 for Dalton) and overall YPA (7.7 for Newton vs. 6.9 for Dalton).
A lead of that caliber sounds like a daunting task for Dalton to overcome, but check out his leads in the other route depth levels (see right).
What this means is all of Newton's YPA lead stems from dink and dunk throws where yards after the catch tend to spike the YPA total. When it comes to productivity on the more difficult and dangerous downfield throws, Dalton has Newton beat by far.
That would be enough of an advantage, but Dalton's edge has actually gotten larger as the season has progressed.
Check out their respective totals on vertical and stretch vertical passes after their first six games:
Andy Dalton vs. Cam Newton
Dalton through Week 6 Route Depth Comp Att Yds TD Int Pen Pen Yds YPA Vertical (11+ yards) 29 55 673 4 4 3 11 11.8 Stretch Vertical (20+ yards) 8 19 257 2 2 0 0 13.5
Newton through Week 6 Route Depth Comp Att Yds TD Int Pen Pen Yds YPA Vertical (11+ yards) 47 105 1110 4 5 4 9 10.3 Stretch Vertical (20+ yards) 18 42 624 3 2 2 -20 13.7
Now compare those figures to their totals over their last five games:
Andy Dalton vs. Cam Newton 2.0
Dalton in Weeks 7-12 (bye in Week 7) Route Depth Comp Att Yds TD Int Pen Pen Yds YPA Vertical (11+ yards) 25 51 670 6 5 6 104 13.6 Stretch Vertical (20+ yards) 13 22 446 4 3 4 79 20.2
Newton in Weeks 7-12 (bye in Week 9) Route Depth Comp Att Yds TD Int Pen Pen Yds YPA Vertical (11+ yards) 30 57 639 3 3 3 0 10.7 Stretch Vertical (20+ yards) 8 20 263 1 1 3 0 11.4
Dalton improved by nearly two yards in vertical YPA and nearly seven yards in stretch vertical YPA. Newton improved by four-tenths of a yard in vertical YPA and dropped by a little more than three yards in the stretch vertical YPA category. In other words, Dalton has progressed while Newton has regressed in these all-important areas.
Some would argue that Dalton has the lead here because he has the services of rookie wideout sensation A.J. Green.
Green has certainly fared quite well this season, but the truth of the matter is Steve Smith -- Newton's favorite target -- has more targets, receptions and receiving yards than Green and also has a higher yards per reception average.
In addition, it has to be noted that Dalton's Weeks 7-12 total was posted with Green out of the lineup for games against the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. That means his huge downfield passing lead was tallied with his best wideout on the sideline nearly 40 percent of the time.
Dalton's edge doesn't stop there. He also has fared much better than Newton in the bad decision rate (BDR) metric. This is a game-tape review metric that gauges how often a quarterback makes a mistake that leads either to a turnover or a near turnover (e.g. dropped interception, fumble recovered by the offense, etc.).
For the season, Dalton has a 3.7 percent BDR. Anything higher 3 percent in this category is considered unacceptable, so he has some room for improvement, but his total is much better than Newton's 5.0 percent BDR.
To be fair, Newton's BDR in Weeks 7-12 is lower than Dalton's total in the same time frame (2.4 percent for Newton, 3.3 percent for Dalton), but that just goes to show that when Newton was putting up his phenomenal early-season yardage totals, he was doing it while forcing an incredibly high number of passes into coverage.
To put this risk-taking into perspective, consider that Newton's 6.8 percent BDR in Weeks 1-6 was more than 50 percent higher than Jay Cutler's 4.5 percent BDR in 2010. That's not a misprint -- Newton actually was making errors one-and-a-half times as often as the poster child for ill-advised aerials.
One also cannot overlook the fact that Dalton has his team in playoff contention (the Bengals have a 52.2 percent chance of making the postseason, according to the ESPN Insider Playoffs Predictor), while Newton's Panthers have only three wins on the season, two of which came against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts.
For those who say this isn't a fair comparison because the Cincinnati Bengals are a better team than the Carolina Panthers, it needs to be pointed out that the Bengals were 4-12 last year, or only two games better than the Panthers. The offseason was also quite unkind to Cincinnati, as they lost one of their top cornerbacks in free agency (Johnathan Joseph) and had to gut their wide receiver corps. Wins are often overvalued when it comes to grading quarterbacks, but they still are quite important, and Dalton's edge here should not be taken lightly.
None of the above evidence should be taken lightly, but it might not be enough to overcome the huge PR edge Newton gains because of his Heisman Trophy, prolific stats and willingness to be an icon and entertainer. If hype is taken out of the equation, however, at this moment the 2011 Rookie of the Year award should go to Dalton." |

I think the Dalton crowd just want to be different
the whole wins thing don't feel as relevant because a rookie QB can't control what their respective defenses (and kicker with chipshots) do for them 12/4/2011 5:16:17 PM |

basically using some fancy stats to say Dalton should get it because statistically he's a better passer but i mean
Quote : | "and has a good shot at breaking the season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback" |
actually has a good shot at breaking Dickerson's NFL rookie record (any position) at rushing touchdowns if he gets 6 more in the last 4 games
a couple more yards per completion is great for Dalton and so is 4 more passing touchdowns, but that doesnt make up for Cam's better completion percentage or, i dunno, his 13:1 rushing TD advantage over that redheaded bitch12/4/2011 5:27:22 PM |

that whole article is a load of bullshit. Bad Decision Rating? are you fucking kidding me
Cincinnati may have been bad last year, but they have had consistency with coaching. the Panthers are in a transitional phase, and as one would expect, there are some bumps along the way. new scheme, rookies starting at key positions, etc.
Newton has been responsible for 26 touchdowns after today.
Dalton? 18. that's a difference of 48 points, 56 if you count extra points with the TD. 12/4/2011 5:28:52 PM |

The Bengals were bad last year due to chemistry problems and locker room issues. Remember that the year before last they won the difficult AFC South on the strength of their defense and their running game.
They still have basically the same defense and running game. 12/4/2011 6:45:52 PM |

That article is a load of shit. Yes, Newton has a ton more yards, touchdowns, passing yards, rushing yards, rookie records, veteran records, but look at the crucial yards-per-pass-attempt-for-attempts-greater-than-11-yards stat, Dalton blows him out of the water by 2.3 yards-per-pass-attempt-for-attempts-greater-than-11-yards!!! Oh and Dalton's defense and special teams are great, thus Dalton is solely responsible for getting his team near the playoffs. 12/5/2011 10:28:23 AM |

Quote : | "Quote of the Week III "I can take getting beat by a better football team. I wish they were.'' -- Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris, on the Carolina Panthers.
Hmmm. Panthers beat the Bucs by 19. Panthers outgained the Bucs by 100 yards. Josh Freeman was sitting with an injury, yes. But I wonder how Ron Rivera's going to take being demeaned like that after a 38-19 road victory ... particularly with the Bucs visiting Charlotte in 19 days.
One more note: Carolina and Tampa Bay are 4-8, and the Panthers, by virtue of the tiebreaker, are in third place in the NFC South. The Bucs are dead last.
That quote's the definition of bulletin-board material for Carolina." |

I played around a bit with the ESPN Playoff tool. To make the playoffs with the rest of the league wins decided by win%, I think the Panthers have to win out, Falcons can go 1-3, and Detroit goes 0-4 12/5/2011 12:52:02 PM |

one thing that seems to have been overlooked is that not only did Cam break the rushing TD mark for a QB, but he currently leads the NFL in rushing TDs.
Newton-13 McCoy-12 A. Peterson-11
that's some pretty good company, and if he keeps this up, no way Dalton beats him out for ROY 12/5/2011 2:06:37 PM |
