If you ate lean(ish) meat and vegetables, and only drank water... 1200calories can actually be pretty filling.

Think flank steak and a salad. Or chicken and broccoli. Learn to use good spices and seasonings and it will taste pretty good.

That's the secret behind paleo style weightloss.

^ Very true. But it's tough to stick with a paleo diet and improve your endurance.

So, if you do Paleo while training for a marathon or half-marathon, be sure to do your homework so you have enough energy to make it through your long runs.

I agree, low carb and endurance do not mesh well.

However, you can mitigate the drawbacks by eating carbs tactically around training/events.

Well I thought you couldn't spot reduce. So if you're building that muscle group and not losing a lot of belly fat, your belly is just going to stick out more, correct

Yep, spot reduction is only possible with topical creams; and I'd guess that it probably only works for people who are already pretty lean. <12% BF.

I don't have any experience with yohimbine cream though.

Prim joining this thread! Met with my pt this morning and we are going strong 3 times a week starting tomorrow! Excited by the challenge! I need to learn how to maintain. And how to eat properly without feeling hungry all the time. Does that mean more protein? Carbs?

I cannot, I hate TRX. So damn awkward. The only exercises I've enjoyed doing are the flys, rows and pushups.

well after some youtube searching i found this video, this is the kind of workout i'd like to build up to, although some of those exercises i know i wouldn't be able to do at all at this point (3:00 - heck no haha).

some of the movements i have tried are definitely awkward, but the core stuff is pretty intense.

atomic push-up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkHvVT70m6s&feature=related

pike

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvCMHJ_bMnQ&feature=related

oblique crunch

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=k00FkHShSiI&NR=1

i'm not going to cancel my gym membership and just buy a set of trx straps but it is something fun/different to incorporate into my regular workouts.

and since this thread is dying here are some progress pics if i can figure out how to upload them:

If you aren't weight lifting then keep your shirt on, no wants to see your skinny-fat or regular-fat body.

i got tired of face's rants so i stopped posting.

i'm still killing it gym wise - down to a consistent 123 pounds. doing boot camp 3 days a week, training for a half marathon (ran 10 miles today w00t) 2 days a week and filling in the rest of my days with HIIT. eating clean as much as possible.

not really much else to report

Diet Tip:

If you are significantly overweight, I.E. >25% body fat, you do not need a fancy or complicated diet.

Do two things:

1. Increase your protein intake, aiming for 1gram of protein per pound of lean body weight. In this case, simply take 75% of your weight and have that in grams of protein. E.G. 165lbs female: 165 x .75 = 124grams of protein each day. Think chicken breasts, lean steak, fish, pork tenderloin.

2. Reduce your processed carb intake. Less bread and pasta (eliminate if you can). Limit rice, potatoes, starches, etc. You don't have to go carb free; just know that carbohydrate based foods generally provide the least amount of essential nutrients. Replace with vegetables.

Since you must be in a calorie deficitto lose weight , the easiest way to do that is reduce calories. Logically you want to eliminate the foods that provide the least amount of nutrition.

Got a scale for the house for the first time ever. I'm not as out of shape as I thought I was. Haven't been working out as much since we got a puppy...but we've both picked it up the past couple weeks and I'm fairly close to my ideal weight. Need to tone it up just a bit more and get back into a little better cardio shape...but I'm pretty ecstatic seeing that I've barely done anything for the past two months.

there's part of me that hopes that i could exercise restraint and moderation in my diet if i brought them back - but i kind of know that i can't

"That's from May 11th. I'm at roughly 193.5 now. Progress hasn't come as fast as I'd like to see, but strength hasn't dropped off or anything. .75 lb a week? I guess that's not terrible. Been killing it as far as macronutrient/calorie count goes, so all I can do is keep chipping away.

I started tracking shit on myfitnesspal, which helps me realize how easy it is to overeat. The difference between a decent rest day deficit at 2k kcal and 2.5k is a few bites."

That's July 12th. Floating between 187.5 and 189 as of October 1st. That's about .43 lbs a week. Lost 30 lbs since mid January, and did it all while eating cake, ice cream, burgers, and pizza regularly. Get at me clean eaters.

It's gotten harder for sure, though. Squat and deadlift are still improving slightly. Bench press and overhead press...well, I don't want to talk about it. I'm starting to focus more on back/pulling movements since I think that may be my weak link when it comes to pressing. I'm doing around 40-50 minutes of fasted walking 4 or 5 days a week. I've increased my deficit on rest days (like 1350-1600), while keeping my training day calories roughly the same at 2400-2600.

Feels good to be at this weight. I'm leaner and stronger than I have ever been, but I'm not anywhere near satisfied. I guess that's the curse of the bodybuilder/weightlifter/whatever.

I see what you're saying. I haven't been eating enough cake, ice cream, and pizza.

It is true that those movements are usually the first to go in a cut, though. Even if I have "cheat" meals 2-3 times a week, they are around my workouts. On a weekly basis, I'm still in a deficit. Point is, you don't need to subsist on chicken and broccoli to see success.

Ok, I've made a deal with myself - I'm going to bust my ass and if I'm not in reasonable shape (I mean, I don't expect to be 2% body fat and super built, but still) by New Years, I will never work out again.

I've been going at it fairly light over the past two months or so. My diet has been clean as hell, the only problem is I'm struggling to get enough calories while keeping it clean. I find it incredibly difficult to eat more than 1500 calories and I'm suffering for it.

lol

true.

Any suggestions for the legit part of that? (not getting enough calories)

Should I carry around a bag of nuts or something to snack on all day to increase my caloric intake? I hate nuts, but I'll get over it.

The odd thing since I started being serious about this is that I used to easily take in 4k+ calories a day. Granted, it was mostly processed fast food or something. Now that I'm eating decent food, I'm literally not going hungry - I just feel it when I give out entirely too early when I lift.

I wish I had the problem of not being able to eat enough. Nuts, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, sweet potatoes, and milk are all pretty good options (off the top of my head) for getting in a bunch of calories easily. If you're not married to "clean eating", that really opens up the possibilities. The problem with fast food/eating out isn't that it's high carb (it is), it's that it's also high in fat and not particularly high in protein

If I were a so-called "ecto", I'd just be eating 10 bowls of cereal every day.

Eh, not necessarily married to clean eating, but I pretty much refuse to eat fast food anymore. That's more of a financial decision than anything. When I realized how much I was spending on food every week I decided I was going to start cooking my own meals from now on

Thanks for the advice, btw. I did start drinking milk recently to add some extra calories. I will definitely throw in some peanut butter and nuts and see how that goes.

And I'm definitely a skinny fat ecto or something along those lines

IMO, you need to focus on getting stronger.

It's hard to look good naked when you are weak.

Again, IMO, too many people train for fitness (endurance/conditioning) and not for strength.

Learn to love bagels is my advice. No appetite sucks but consider yourself blessed that your lack of control nets a socially acceptable body image. Hard to get sympathy points.
