But on his own show he appeals to a self-selected audience that reminds him often of his greatness. In Washington he was playing to a different crowd, and he failed dismally in the funny person's most solemn obligation: to use absurdity or contrast or hyperbole to elucidate -- to make people see things a little bit differently. He had a chance to tell the president and much of important (and self-important) Washington things it would have been good for them to hear. But he was, like much of the blogosphere itself, telling like-minded people what they already know and alienating all the others. In this sense, he was a man for our times. He also wasn't funny."

Comics like Colbert and Stewart are good at playing the role of the smart yet unmotivated kid who sits at the back of the class making smartass remarks about the teacher. But when you ask the kid to come up front and share his wisdom with the whole class, the comdey usually fades away into embarassment and arrogance. Colbert should stay at the Comedy Channel back-of-the-class.
From the cringing lack of laughter, the Press dinner wasn't a good venue for his brand of sarcasm.

i just got around to watching last thursday's Report, and a quote from one segment jumped out at me. He was doing the prom party thing where the Georgia Governer had an after-prom party.

Of course there are tons of duplicate school names throughout the country, but many of these are completely unique (like Watauga and Smokey Mountain), and the rest of them bring up the NC schools first in a Google search for the names. In the first half of the list, the other schools seem to be in California, then in the 2nd half they are spread througout the south.

.... just kinda weird. i assume this is more or less a random list of high school names (i.e. not really having prom that weekend), but thought it was a bit weird they would get the plurality from small schools in western NC. Colbert is from SC, but i don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

Some friends and I caught that. We came to a few ideas... all those schools have anti-gay policies (and he's from SC so he could be familiar with them) or he just made a list of high schools according to the fan mail he receives.

i'm only closely familiar with Watauga (since I went there from 94-98), and i'm pretty sure it doesn't have any anti-gay policies. It's one of the most liberal-minded schools in NC (well, at least compared to its immediate neighbors, like Avery, Ashe and McDowell.
