try ride w/ someone faster every heat (except the one youre working).

try to get someone faster w/ a similar car to ride w/ you every run

partake in the mentor program

walk the course a lot and ask questions to others walking the course.

basically you gotta take advantage of the best resources there, time and people

They were giving magnets last year too. Really, you're just getting a sticker. They give everybody magnets.

^well you did start late. most of the novices had 3 events worth of experience on you and thats a lot. the first three events are probably the steepest slope on the skill/experience curve

i wish i could check my score against other first timers - i imagine those kind of records aren't kept though

Jason Smith 2005 Ford Mustang GT 92.627
Buddy Efird 1997 Acura Integra 94.010 (i'm fairly certain it was his first time)
Gregory Roberts 2005 Nissan Maxima 95.001

4T STT 17 Daryl Ammons 1984 Mazda RX-7 92.523 92.297 89.832 88.890 87.641 70.375 2.012

10 STT 171 Joel Ammons 1984 Mazda RX-7 91.253 92.569 106.608 91.152+1 169.886+DNF 73.276 1.284

These guys claimed to be "first timers". Not too bad for your first time out. I am pretty sure that treadwear 40 tires are not allowed in STT but whatever. They were the ones that blew a tire near the end of the day. Those times just make me look bad!

15 STT 146 David Henry 1985 Mazda Rx7 119.996+DNF 93.495+1 95.439 92.840+2 93.100 74.759 0.031

I was under the impression that treadwear ratings vary from company to company, meaning that they should only be used to either very generally compare tires, or to compare tires w/in the same company.

i believe your impression is correct. treadwear ratings are pretty close to worthless when comparing different types of tires, especially across brands

indeed, but the SCCA defines a street tire as having a tread wear rating of 140+. so while it doesnt mean much for actual tread wear, it means a lot for SCCA classing

^^^ what tires were they running that had a tread wear of 40? where did you get the number 40?

^^^^ Was the RX-7 white? Were they a father/son pair that trailered it in? If so, they're far from new, I've auto-crossed with them twice here in TN Nice guys though, if it's who I think it is I worked a corner with 'em.

They had the red RX7. They told me it was treadwear 40. I worked at station 4 with the son, I agree, very good peoples. I'm just sore because they beat the crap out of my time in a car that should have been about even with mine.

Tires were Yokahama somethings, I don't remember. They looked like race tires to me.

On the plus side, my dad's tires are now totally gone. Now we have a good reason to get some better tires.

Just did my 3rd AutoX with the East Tennessee Region SCCA club. I'm not really into driving far for AutoX's anymore (I'd rather just hit up some mountain roads) but this one was only 15 minutes from my apartment and my little sister came up and drove. It was her 2nd Autocross, and I let her drive the S, it was awesome. She did great considering it was her 1st AutoX with a stick & RWD. She discovered snap oversteer the hard way at one point, heheh.

Anyways, I took 1st in A Stock, which was cool. I'm on street tires (Potenza S-02's up front, Ecsta MX's in the back) and this club doesn't have a TIR class, so the only class I fit in with my S2000 is AS. This is normally a huge pain since everyone else runs race tires. But this time none of the regulars showed up, just me and guy in a Porsche 911, also on street tires. It was the most fun I've ever had at an Autocross since we were so closely matched. He was ahead for the first two runs, then I had a really smooth run and got him by a full second. He never caught up, and I improved by a 10th, so I won the class. Which is a first for me, except for a 4th place trophy in NOV with Tarheel a year ago (in the Civic).

I also got to drive a Lotus Elise on some of my favorite back roads afterwards! It was a blast, although I like the feel of my S2000 a lot better. Definitely a sweet little car, but not one that I think would be enjoyable around town.
