sure, that's what they say, but come on.... that makes no sense, especially with all the hype they put out when they signed Seinfeld.
The new ads are better, but still not sure what the point is. Again, it's like MS is completely flat-footed and has no idea how to respond to "the little guy" sniping at their heels. But to do a direct parody of the Mac ads is basically admitting that they don't know what to do.9/19/2008 1:04:03 PM |

^^If you believe that, you are more gullible than I thought. It makes perfect sense. The hype gets interest and media attention, then you convert the hype into a message that gets noticed.
And how can you not get the point? It's so BRUTALLY simple. Mac Ads portray the PC as mundane, unexciting, and somehow lacking. The new Microsoft Ad shows actual people (rather than stereotyped actors) who refute the Apple claim in a humorous and uplifting manner.
Maybe you should go into advertising
^Don't see how that really matters. Most of the graphics work is probably farmed out to vendors, and it's no suprise at all they used Adobe Software. MS has never competed in the publishing industry, that guy is a retard in asking why they didnt use Expressions. But it is funny they let things like this slip through the cracks, you should see the internal emails 9/20/2008 11:25:15 AM |

a) the first two ads made me feel sorry for Microsoft that they were so out of touch with people in this current generation
b) the initial ads did get attention "hype" but not all attention is good, and most of what came out of the first two ads was negative attention.
c) the third run of ads are close, but aren't going to do anything for people who buy computers because they are 'hip' or simple. which is exactly what the apple ads go for. the PC will never be 'hip' because everyone has one. these ads only reinforce that, and seem to flip it and try to make you think that because everyone has one, it's 'cool'.
d) i applaud microsoft's effort, i think given all the circumstances the ads will do very well and help microsofts image, which i think is the end goal. but... they'll never touch the apple image.

i would LOVE to hear how they refute Apple's claims that they are mundate, unexciting, and somehow lacking.
yes the commercials are humorous and uplifting, but no where did i get "exciting, satisfiying, fun" out of people saying they wear glasses or have beards. what i get out of the ads is that many people from different backgrounds all use PC's. no where do i hear anyone say using a PC is as satisfying as delicious cake... up until this point it's people wishing windows was satisfying like eating cake.

Really? Did you stick your head in the sand for the past month? Every major new publication has published articles on the ads, on the new campaign, and how Microsoft is rebuilding it's image.
The Seinfeld/Gates ads were the most watch commercials in the US while they've been out. Over 550 million viewers. Thousands of blogs, hundreds of media outlets talking about it. The overwhelming reaction has been positive, and the "it was funny, but didn't sell me anything" was the entire point.
Quote : | "b) the initial ads did get attention "hype" but not all attention is good, and most of what came out of the first two ads was negative attention." |
Where did you get that impression? The only people who "hate" the ads are the ones like agentlion and yourself who try to read between lines that don't exist. They were just lighthearted, fun icebreakers. Microsoft hasn't really done any notable direct to consumer advertising in years.

You missed the point. This campaign is about IMAGE and BRAND, not sales. Vista is an undeniable commercial success.
For 2007, OSX had 32% growth in market share. Vista had 355% growth. These commercials aren't about selling more product. They are about the IMPRESSION that Apple gives, that somehow using Microsoft products means you can't be unique, creative, exciting or happy. So they show real people who live interesting and fulfilling lives and PC's help them do that.

so seriously - do you really think their idea from the start was to spend 10's of millions of dollars to bring Seinfeld in, create a couple baffling commercials with him, just to generate noise in the media, then come out the real campaign? come on..... they probably had Seinfeld lined up for months, but got cold feet when the first round of commercials were universally panned.

now that's about as disingenuous as you can make it, Noen. If you want to compare apples-to-apples, you have to compare 1) OS X growth rate (of 32%, if you're number is correct) to Windows growth rate, which I believe is hovering somewhere around 5% 2) Vista growth of 355% to OS X 10.5 Leopard growth, which i am not aware of, however I would not be surprised if it far exceeded 355%, as the upgrade rate for 10.4 to 10.5 is much higher than for XP to Vista (for any number of reasons, not the least of which are a smaller initial user base, and a more "passionate" user base about having the latest thing [insert snarky comment here about kool aid])9/20/2008 4:36:03 PM |

I can't comment either way on what he was paid (which is all rumor, btw), but I can tell you, without doubt, that this was ALWAYS the plan. I work here, the campaign hasn't changed. You can be a conspiracy theorist if you want, no skin off my back.

OEM Sales account for ~80% of Vista's sales. So you would be completely incorrect. Very few users upgrade from XP to Vista on existing machines (and were never really intended to, which was a huge part of the negative publicity of Vista at launch)

you're still comparing apples to oranges. Vista was launched in January 2007 (?). No shit people are still buying PCs, and most of those PCs happen to have Vista on them.
But if you want to look at overall OS growth, you still have to look at the overall market for Macs, which has doubled in the past couple years (starting from a small number, and getting less-small) vs. PCs, which are near saturation and are having steady 5% growth. What version of Windows is installed on those PCs is irrelevant.9/20/2008 6:19:30 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
you do realize that 5% growth of a 90% market share is enormously larger than a 2-3% growth right? PC's are not anywhere close to saturation.
Less than 1 in 6 people in the world own a computer. In the next 5 years, the market in China alone will nearly double the entire PC market. The US is a drop in the bucket in terms of growth. Microsoft fully localizes to hundreds of languages outside of English. Apple handles a dozen or so. 9/20/2008 7:05:52 PM |

^I believe people, not so much the blogosphere. So much of those posts and opinions is based on either misinformation, or completely incorrect assumptions, or total lies.
This is the same kind of phenomenon that happened to Vista. Everyone WROTE how horrible it was, yet very few had ever even used it. It created the flash mob effect. The same thing can be seen on the iPhone App Store. All of those stories are based on BLOGS and other MEDIA outlets reporting on how they themselves are reporting on how the ads suck. It's retarded. And many of those blogs and articles, much like many of the poster on TWW, didn't like the ad because they doomed it before it aired and found their own faults in it.
Let's be really honest, it doesn't matter what Microsoft puts out, 2/3 of the people out there will do their absolute best to SLAM it.
I'll trust the independent survey data that says the opposite, to the rants and ramblings of some disgruntled keyboard jockeys.
I also love how, amidst all this, there has been VERY little press about the new Zune. The Zune client software is worlds better, easier and more flexible than iTunes, and the 3.0 firmware on the Zune itself leapfrogs it past the iPod classic and right in line with the touch.

i have a Zune, LOVE 3.0 i use Vista, LOVE it (ok, just the 64-bit)
i am in no way disgruntled against microsoft, in fact i am a firm supporter of microsoft, but me supporting their software does not mean i have to agree with their advertising.
but still i can be honest with myself and see both sides of the story and see that on one side there's plenty of articles out there that are at BEST puzzled by the seinfield ads, and at MOST people just didn't get it or didn't like it.
blogs = opinion news media = factual (unless it's an editorial)
and guess what?, the news reports that the blog (read:opinions) out there didn't get it.
don't use the Zune to change topics. (though i love 3.0)

You know, since apparently you think I'm incapable of making a true statement. It's one thing to give an informed opinion (for instance a review of a product). It's another thing to speculate and guess about intentions, and decisions, then use those speculations to conclude a defining opinion on something.

dude, please read my post. i was pointing to the fact that news articles were reporting on people's opinions.
whether people like an advertisement or not... is subjective, because it's based on people's opinions. THIS IS COMMON SENSE, hence why you will NEVER read opinion in a news article unless it's an editorial.
what they DO do, is report on what public's opinion is. and that was the fact that the general public did not get the first round of ads. GET OVER IT.
a) you liked the first round of ads, public opinion disagrees with you b) you like Zune 3.0 firmware & client software, public opinion agrees with you
people disagree on things... it's ok
but to always think that your opinion is the only one that matters, well that's arrogance.
Quote : | "I don't base my opinions on the rants of completely in-the-dark bloggers" |
no one is basing their opinions on the rants of bloggers. i'm merely pointing out that the general mass majority of people didn't like the 1st round of ads.
MY OPINION IS THAT I DON'T LIKE THE (1st round) OF ADS, this is based entirely on the fact that I was sitting on my couch with my wife and we saw the commercial and was like WTF

^The last article doesn't say anything about the current CashBack deal, other than it didn't increase marketshare for live search, not that people don't use it.
And all his complaints against "SearchPerks" are retarded. It's a small, pilot initiative. If they are only taking a million users, why WOULD they use any other economy than the US? We consume more than anyone else on earth. Why would they spend the time to develop a plugin for non IE browsers, again, when they only need to find a million participants.
His arguments would be completely valid if they were about a permanent, full public released utility. At least it's an open entry system.

Very good article by Richard Stallman actually. He is right that it will cost users more over time. He is also right that it has a MUCH larger potential to be locked into proprietary eco-systems. But I don't think the privacy issue is really valid. 10/1/2008 7:09:30 PM |

Noen, I'm not directing anything at you personally at all, nor is it directed at Microsoft.
I'm not belittling it because it's Microsoft, I'm belittling it because the "FREE" stuff isn't worth the time and energy or intrusion of a search toolbar I have to use 200 freakin consecutive days, it's not worth even $40.
Here's an example: Microsoft Feedback offered free software valued at over $100-$200 (last December) for installing a feedback application for 3-months. No intrusion, no annoyances, no interactivity required. Now THAT'S WORTH IT.
I just recently got ANOTHER email from Microsoft for doing the SAME EXACT THING (3-months of having MS Feedback app in the background) and what are they giving this time? A $10 amazon.com giftcard.
Seriously WTF. Both are Microsoft examples, one's good, one's bad. Nothing to do with the company, it has to do with time/effort involved, granted it's not much since I use the built-in search in firefox, it probably wouldn't even be noticeable, but the rewards take so much time to build up, I'll have likely forgot the point system even existed and/or forget to redeem them before the promotion ended.
And it's not FREE if you are required to do something in return for it. In this case they just not giving enough incentive.
I do however like the 3% cashback from Newegg.com using cashback rewards. I spend lots of money there, and see all I have to do is click on a single link and money back.

^Agreed, and getting normal people to upload videos to be a part of those ads is even better. It says, "See, we are the everyman, we aren't pretentious." 10/3/2008 12:29:18 PM |

that's the one that came up first but the one I saw on tv was like 2 min long with more stars. the amount of apple fanboys and angry hipsters in this thread is pretty disgusting10/3/2008 3:59:25 PM |

1) are you referring to youtube comments? Who the fuck cares about youtube commenters? Those people are 10 times dumber than the people who hang out in Chit Chat
2) I was referring to your claim that MS got "just about every relevant star", presumably to say "I'm a PC" in that commercial..... I recognized like 5 people in that commercial, one of them being Bill Gates, one of them a b-ball player, and one best known for being on Desperate Housewives. I'm just not clear how you can claim that commercial to contain any relevant starts, just less "just about every" one of them 10/3/2008 4:06:55 PM |

do you understand that "those youtube people" represent 90+% of the consumer market share? also, in just that commercial, there's tony parker, bill gates, eva langoria, pharrell and N.E.R.D., bill gates, and some others that were cut from the original full length commercial. they might not mean much to you, but you're an excruciatingly small minority when it comes to 1) people who microsoft cares about (the majority of their market), 2) who you think is a relevant celebrity. 10/3/2008 4:16:01 PM |
