i like how these assholes who join the military to thump their chests bitch at me about defending my freedom

offensive strikes on foreign powers does not fucking count as defending my freedom, especially if you volunteer for it.

anyway -- back on fucking topic: who cares what it looks like. you cannot continue to drive cars that waste gas faster than if you dumped it on the fucking ground. our country consumes more gasoline than quietly consumes dicks

damn mcdanger, transfer to fuckin UNC. Automoblie use of gas is just a small part of a much bigger fuel usage problem and its gonna take serious policy change to fix it, not importing some gay ass little car.

yes, automobiles are only a fraction of the total consumption.

but every little bit helps. it adds up.

And until then, we should drive the most fuel inefficient pieces of shit out there!

I'll take a civic (lowerend of range) or accord (higher end) hybrid for that price, what a fucking retarded idea.

It's not likely that they'd bother marketing this to the type of people who drive SUVs anyway. It's ideal for the city and that's where it's meant to be driven and where it will be marketed (more than likely). I saw these things all over Paris and they are great for that type of city. You don't see little smart cars like this out on the highway, they have other models designed for that.

yeah, we were on the SUV trip in refrence to general gas usage.

Oh, and remember -- if it doesn't waste more gasoline than an Iraqi oilfield fire, it's "gay"

you're missing the point...

Yeah, I like maniacally fast cars and motorcycles. No, I don't exploit their performance when anyone else is around. Fast is not necessarily stupid. Regardless, most people neither want or should have a car or motocycle like some of the stuff I've had. I said that the Smart car was a great machine for what it is designed to do, but its place, with a handful of exceptions, is not to be the sole transportation of people in the United States (and that is coming from a person who has owned a vehicle with an 85 mph top speed, as well as two vehicles with almost no space to carry anything.)

and no, nobody needs a GSX-R 750, or a 285 hp Miata, or a 360 hp S2000...but nobody needs to play golf, either.

furthermore, your stereotypes are wrong. I vote Libertarian about as often as I vote Republican, and I love small cars as much as anyone in this thread--even those that are often described as "gay"...I've owned a Miata, and I'd love to have either a VW Bug, Thing, or bus...or all of the above. Hell, some people even say that S2000s are a girly car (they are out of their minds, but still...) My biggest gripe with the S2000 is that it's too big (and a little "soft"). I'd love to have a Lotus Elise.

I think the SUV craze is absolutely stupid.

and what's wrong with liking guns or staying in top physical condition?

a stock s2000 is kind of underwhelming. mine is supercharged, although it still doesn't have much below 6000 rpm. it's still not overwhelmingly powerful, but it's pretty strong.

comptech aftercooled unit, with comptech exhaust. it's not totally ferocious or anything...should make about 360 crank. feels very composed...not like most tuner cars. just feels like the way it should've been from the factory.

2850 or so. not THAT light, but pretty light.

They handle really well. Good suspension and nice, stiff chassis (esp for a convertible). Pretty decent steering feel (although I wish it was a little lighter and a little quicker, but then again, I was coming from a tricked out Miata, so the S2000 actually doesn't feel very agile in comparison...but it's much more surefooted and composed. my miata was like a cross between riding a bull and a shifter kart). and i've never taken any curves at anything over maybe 100 or so (and those were just gentle sweepers), but it feels pretty secure at 140-145 (although it's loud as hell at those speeds with the soft top).

Actually, I can. It's not your place to say otherwise.

Which is funny considering that I get better gas mileage than most SUVs. Worse than most "normal" cars though.

Do I feel guilty about it sometimes? Yes. How far do I drive though? Work is a little over a mile away. Some days I walk. I go on long trips infrequently. So overall my little piece of this fuel consumption problem isn't really that great.

yeah, it seemed surefooted when i drove it, but i didnt play much cuz he just got it and I was the first person he let drive it. (he ran my damn vette up to like 105 though....)

Thats the remarkable thing about that vette, I hit 150 in it and the faster it went, the harder it sucked to the road. Amaizing aerodynamics. (disclaimer, i was mad alone on a rural strech of 4 lane back home in the middle of the night so the only idiot id killed would be me....)

oh, the ex had a miata too, it seemed like it would be fun as hell at like VIR...

miatas are a blast

and if someone with more money than sense strokes enough checks to Flyin' Miata and Extreme Motorsports, they are something else. mine would burn tires through 1st and 2nd just by stomping the gas, and break them loose again into 3rd on a hard shift...and the suspension was so stiff that you could sometimes feel painted stuff on the pavement. the steering was go-kart quick. it was kind of a bull in a china shop, though...way more power than the chassis could really deal with, even with extra bracing and a double-braced roll bar.

On that road at that time, no traffic what so ever, ran exit to exit to look for deer graizing, shit in the road, traffic, etc, nothing, so yeah, unless a majic car appeared there was no traffic ahead of me. (there was a state trooper sitting on the on ramp across from where i came off the run....

--Her miata was all worn out and she had destroyed the clutch and brakes (go figure) so i didnt get to play, just seemed fun. Id love to try out a monster miata, 351 in that seems crazy.

Nothing special, '96 Lincoln Mark VIII. 285 HP, but not that fast due to conservative gearing (3.07) and heavy. I was using "normal" in the sense of my car being overkill in terms of size and engine. Damn thing is almost as big as a Crown Vic. I like it though.

Kind of has the Jekyll/Hyde problem with fuel economy. I rarely get more than 15 MPG city (usually more like 13) but have seen as high as 27 MPG on long highway trips.

yeah that gearing's gotta help. I restored an '82 vette in HS that had a 2.73 in it. Couldnt get out of its own way, but got like 21mpg (good as hell for back then).

They chose those gears for hw drivin (marketability). Kinda like riding a 10 speed bike in 10th gear all the time. Sucks slow but you can haul ass top end.

Yeah, no balls off the line but the top end would be there. Fastest I've ever had the car (~105) it wasn't even turning 3500 rpm. Depending on who you talk to the VIII may or may not be electronically limited at 124, haven't felt the desire to test that one yet...

anyway, back to the Smart cars.....

I thought this was funny - the next two pictures are the view out of my apartment windows in downtown Munich when I got home this evening

As you can see, the Smart car is a good 1/4-1/3 shorter than the Mini.

Also, Paris was swarming with them when we went last fall -

I drove a 60hp Beetle ('71 I think) for three months and it was fine for the highway. Couldnt get it past 90, but it would do 80 just fine and still have some passing power on tap.

You can't see it, but this dude is actually carrying a smart car on the back of his bike. The snow is hiding it, though. (Looks like it all melted well in the last week.)

I wonder how much they cost. I want one.

And I understand they are supposedly crash resistant...but I wonder if life insurance companies would make you pay more if you drove one of those things.

ok two question
1- they are practical in the city for space reasons obviosly but if they are fuel efficient, wouldnt they be more practical outside of the city where people drive longer distances.

2- anyone have the percentages of where fuel is used up the most, if automobiles are only a small fraction of fuel usage i'd like to know where most of it is going
