yeah don't click on that link and give Doyel any extra page hits, just click on page one to read the original article. He also showed up on 850 the Buzz yesterday to talk about what he wrote and his feeling about NC State.

I think its rediculous that this whole article and all the shittiness directed towards us is based on a condition that we DONT land Barnes or Calipari. Whos saying we wont? Its not final for either yet.
Also it does not mean that if we dont land either then our program goes down the toilet.
AND it doesent make light of the fact that despite Herb being a good coach and improving our progam, IF and WHEN we land a barnes/calipari type then it will be a genius move on our part for the future as Herb still had 5+ years of salary coming his way and we have already upgraded without buying out the rest of his contract.
If we dont land a bigtime coach this year, then we will run off the guy we get in the meantime and get a Roy Williams of our own just like UNC did.
The only differnce - the media will make us look worse than UNC/Indiana and other schools becuase the media is a bunchof liberal fags that dont like what state stands for. Period.
Only time will tell... 4/8/2006 6:19:38 PM |

Doyel dosen't even make sense, he is writing now about how great a coach herb was and that we are gonna send our bball program to hell by running him away, but during the season he was bashing nc state talking about how bad our team was and that we were overrated when herb was our coach. Doyel just has something against state for some reason, maybe he didn't get admitted or maybe a gurl from nc state wouldn't blow him or something? Who knows? NC State could get coach K and he would still talk shit about how much we suck. Fuck him, he's a no talent bitch.

A lot of people are writing huge checks with their mouths by betting so adamantly against NC state. What's the point? Once we've made an upgrade, you're either going to hop on the bandwagon or be so bitter as to have mixed feelings.
Either way, you'll be in the camp that was against the new success. You've backed yourselves into the dumb position where NCSU success (which you presumably want) makes you look idiotic.

Even with Cal or Barnes next year we wont get any love from the media. Even if we have a dominant season with Cal or Barnes next year we wont get any love from the media. This is a rebuilding process as far as our national perception goes & bigtime schools are sweating because they know we are on the verge of getting there.
UNC/DUKE/WAKE fans sweat even more because any success we derive from this will come at their expense. Our closeness to success means nothing up to now while we are in the shadow of UNC &DUKE.
Its not enough to prove that we can do it, we need to get it done and do so often before national perception turns around.

Quote : | " State has every right to pursue name coach Note: This column will appear in Monday's print edition. By Caulton Tudor
The most surprising aspect of N.C. State’s basketball coaching search is the belief by some that it’s a waste of time for the school to court big names. What a bunch of hogwash.
To say State is acting too big for its britches by aiming high is exactly like saying that South Carolina had no business trying to hire Steve Spurrier as its football coach. Or that Rick Pitino, having once coached the basketball team at Kentucky, would never consider Louisville.
Wolfpack athletics director Lee Fowler is doing precisely what he should do in swinging for the fences in his quest to find Herb Sendek’s replacement. Why not? Even more to the point, why should anyone at State take a defeatist attitude into its own job hunt? That would be just begging to be average.
There is no guarantee that Fowler will connect, of course. Texas’ Rick Barnes, the No. 1 target all along, declined. But it certainly wasn’t a no-brainer for Barnes. He mulled the offer long and hard. And with good reason. State’s basketball situation is attractive by any comparison. The fans are passionate, the program’s legacy rich and the financial rewards generous.
It’s safe to say that 75 percent of all current college basketball coaches would jump at the opportunity to coach the Wolfpack. Does that precludes the possibility of landing a coach among the remaining 25 percent? Certainly not.
Where basketball is concerned, State is not a mid-major school in a mid-major conference at a mid-major location. It’s just the opposite, in fact.
State basketball has had periods of greatness dating back to World War II and has been consistently far above average throughout most of that same stretch.
Had it not been for Everett Case winning big at State in the 1940s and ’50s, there is every chance that North Carolina would not have hired Frank McGuire and gone undefeated in 1957.
Had it not been for State’s fans, the ACC Tournament would not have become a national sports fixture. Had it not been for Lorenzo Charles, there wouldn’t be a lead highlight film clip for CBS-TV to start each NCAA Tournament.
Jim Valvano won a national championship at State at about the same time that Mike Krzyzewski was fighting like the devil to keep Duke fans from storming his front porch.
It’s true that State has had its moments of turmoil. So have North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, UCLA, Michigan, Kansas and just about every other school that dabbles in high-octane athletics competition.
But the assertion by some that State is a second-class basketball program with second-class athletic citizenship is more than inaccurate. It’s offensive to the ear.
Now, Fowler has turned his attention to Memphis coach John Calipari, another big name.
Whether Calipari is interested or up to State’s muster isn’t known at this point. But if the coach is interested and passes what will surely be a close inspection by the school, you can bet your Chuck Taylor high-tops that he will not arrive in Raleigh with a willingness to concede ACC championships and regional supremacy to Carolina and Duke.
He will go after Williams the same way Williams went after Krzyzewski; the same way Krzyzewski chased Dean Smith in the 1980s and ’90s.
What’s wrong with that?
Should State hire a coach, whether that coach is a big, middle or little name, who takes the approach that Duke and Carolina are simply too good for the Pack to attack head-on?
That’s ridiculous. If something like that made any sort of sense, every other school in the ACC would have dropped football the moment Florida State was admitted as a conference member.
I’m not saying that John Calipari is right for State or that the school is right for him. But you put Calipari on that Wolfpack sideline next season, and it’s a stone-cold lock that the country — and the country’s top high school prospects — will take immediate notice.
No one will scratch their head and ask themselves, “Now who was that guy N.C. State hired?”
It comes down to this: State right now has an opportunity to replace a good coach with a great one, and it’s going to take a great one to compete evenly against Duke and Carolina.
Great coaches can be found almost anywhere. Duke found Krzyzewski at Army. That is a well known fact. Less known is the fact that Duke once strongly considered hiring Adolph Rupp not long after he was basically forced to retire at Kentucky.
Fowler could well wind up bringing in a coach with little or no name recognition, and that coach could turn out to be the next Krzyzewski or Williams.
But for anyone to criticize Fowler and State for pursuing a coach capable of making the biggest possible instant impact is absurd at best and ignorant at worst.
Here’s another way to look at it: Roy Williams said no to Carolina once, but did that stop Dick Baddour and the school from going after the same coach a second time? No, because Carolina wanted to get the best coach it could.
State has every right to do the same. If it doesn’t work out, so be it. But there is no reason in the world for State to target coaches who think that being third on the block is good enough." |

Quote : | "Why coaches choose to turn down N.C. State Gregg Doyel April 12, 2006 By Gregg Doyel CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer Tell Gregg your opinion!
The people at North Carolina State are starting to realize just how attractive -- or not -- their coaching vacancy is perceived to be around the country.
N.C. State's new coach might not have Andrew Brackman on his roster. (Getty Images) N.C. State's new coach might not have Andrew Brackman on his roster. (Getty Images) Already two coaches with ample reason to take the job -- Texas' Rick Barnes, a North Carolina native and ACC aficionado; and Memphis' John Calipari, whose weak conference affiliation does more harm than good -- have elected to stay at their schools for less money than they would have received from the Wolfpack.
Both Barnes and Calipari turned down roughly $400,000 in additional annual compensation to stay at Texas and Memphis.
At the highest levels of college basketball, what's wrong with the N.C. State job?
Let us count the ways:
Expectations: N.C. State made it clear to Barnes and Calipari that finishing third in the ACC, if that means finishing behind Duke and North Carolina, is not acceptable. That's well and good to shoot that high, but realistic? It's not realistic. True, N.C. State has won two national championships. But look at the coaches who won those titles, Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano, and more important, look at their reputations from an NCAA investigative standpoint. Is N.C. State a place where you can win a national championship without cutting large corners here and there? It hasn't been done -- cleanly -- yet.
Admissions: Former Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek preferred cerebral athletes, setting a tone that spoiled the school's admissions board. Along the way, Sendek and the Wolfpack were unable to recruit two Raleigh stars -- Chris Wilcox and P.J. Tucker -- who qualified to play as college freshmen yet couldn't get past the N.C. State admissions office. Wilcox started for Maryland's 2002 national championship team, while Tucker was a second-team All-American this season at Texas. Tucker helped the Longhorns end N.C. State's season in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, putting up 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Attrition: This is the scariest reason of all. Coaches like Barnes and Calipari, who have turned losers into winners everywhere they've been, aren't afraid of North Carolina's Roy Williams or Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. They're more afraid of potential hangups with the school's admissions department. But worst of all is the potential for massive attrition from N.C. State's 22-10 team in 2005-06. The known is bad: starters Tony Bethel, Cameron Bennerman and Ilian Evtimov were seniors. The unknown is worse as it relates to the program's sophomore nucleus: Star center Cedric Simmons is considering entering the 2006 NBA Draft; power forward/pitcher Andrew Brackman is considering focusing only on baseball to get ready for the 2007 draft; and Jamaican wing Gavin Grant faces deportation issues.
Barnes and Calipari had reasons to stay where they are, of course. Barnes has Texas as a perennial Top 10 team, with another fabulous recruiting class on the way. Calipari also has Memphis in annual Top 10 territory.
Of the two, Calipari came closer to joining the Wolfpack. A source close to N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler -- a former Memphis assistant under Dana Kirk -- said Fowler and Calipari bonded this week. Fowler noted that Calipari's latest graduation rates compared favorably to Sendek's, and Fowler also took an in-depth look into Calipari's background, dating to the Marcus Camby scandal in 1996 when Camby took money from an agent while playing for UMass.
After speaking with the NCAA, the source said, Fowler was eager to hire Calipari. And the feeling was almost mutual.
"I know for a fact Cal wanted the job, and he wanted to work for Lee Fowler," the source said. "But there were two or three things (Calipari) felt he couldn't overcome (at N.C. State), and he's not speaking about those things."
Those things, whatever they are, helped Calipari and Barnes turn N.C. State's attention into massive raises at their current schools. Those things, whatever they are, won't scare away everyone, of course.
LSU's John Brady is said to be next on the Wolfpack wish list, and if N.C. State is OK with the fact Brady has made a career out of coaching at the only viable in-state option for Louisiana's best players, Brady will be OK with N.C. State's money.
Is Brady an upgrade over Sendek? Ask ACC coaches. First, though, make them stop laughing. " |

from statefansnation.com
Why did you come here to read this blog? Think about that while I list some of the things that govern my reading choices:
To find out about what is currently happening in the world. To learn about something that I am interested in, but don’t know much about. Analysis and commentaries that point out things that I never considered or from a different view point. Entertainment What sorts of things do I avoid?
Biased reporting Things that I have no interest in. Things written strictly for shock value. (Jim Rome et al) Lies and speculation posing as news (National Enquirer) So where does Greg Doyel and his current little hot streak fit?
But now, after being made so miserable at N.C. State that he jumped to Arizona State, Sendek is gone. And soon, if there is a God in that Carolina blue heaven, Wolfpack basketball will follow. Is N.C. State a place where you can win a national championship without cutting large corners here and there? It hasn’t been done — cleanly — yet. The answer is quite simple….none of the above. Here’s another little blurb from one of Doyel’s recent rants:
…the unrealistic N.C. State fan base and juvenile N.C. State media [didn’t] understand what they had in Sendek.
They didn’t have a comedian. They didn’t have a motivational speaker. They didn’t have a guy who was going to win over media by filling their notepads with one-liners, or win over fans by making snide comments about Duke or North Carolina.
They had a great basketball coach… We’ve all seen the Great Herb Debates. Even Herb’s most ardent supporters never claimed that he was a great coach. So why is Doyel?
I believe that the answer is quite simple. Doyel is little more than a message board troll that now has his own column on CBS. Here’s a definition that I think describes Doyel’s recent efforts quite nicely:
Troller is looking for a response…ANY response, and he will chum the waters with complaints, insults, compliments, and inflammatory tidbits hoping that someone…ANYONE, will take the bait. When Doyel was writing for the Charlotte Observer, he used to post infrequently at statefans.com. I believe that he is now trolling for NC State fans (along with UNC and Duke fans) to increase the hit rate on his web page.
You are playing into his hands whenever you:
Fire off your flame-throwing e-mail retort; Dissect his stupidity and show him how wrong he is; Write complaints to his editors; or Throw his stupidity back in his face and ask him if he wants red or white wine with his crow. CBS and Doyel don’t care WHY you are visiting his page. They don’t care if you like what he has to say. They just want you to visit:
CBS wants hits on their webpage for their advertising fees. Doyel wants hits so they he can find a bigger and better job. Do you think I’m being harsh? Well answer these questions:
When has Doyel ever told you something about the ACC that you didn’t already know? Do you find him generally entertaining? Do you think he provides a unique analysis or view point on a given issue? If you answered “yes” to one of these questions…then by all means continue to read his tripe.
If you’re like me, and answered “no” to all three questions, then here’s a little more free advice (just my thing today)….just ignore him. Don’t waste time refuting his silliness. Don’t waste time getting mad. DON’T GO TO HIS WEB PAGE. Just ignore him. He probably won’t go away….but does it (or Doyel) really matter? 4/12/2006 7:49:50 PM |
