I realize this is late, but I'm 8 time zones away, so bear with me. Hospitality, with few exceptions, is necessarily shallow. It is the greeting extend to someone the host essentially knows nothing about. When met with the kind of condescension that prompted this thread, it is inevitably bound to wither. Therefore, it is ignorant at best, hypocritical at worst, to complain loudly about everything in the South, and then lament the lack of “Southern Hospitality” you receive.

Also, has anyone noticed that people tend to project the traits they dislike about themselves the most on others? So someone from Massachusetts moves here, or I move there, and he calls me / assumes (without really knowing me) that I'm a prejudicial, backwards, ignorant hick . . . isn't that somewhat of the same thing? The leftish / northeastern liberal attitude that anyone who disagrees must be dumb / xenonphobic / racist is tiring, shallow, ignorant in itself, and very arrogant.

Wait's partly right though, one reason Southerners are so bitter about this is that we ARE seeing the South slip away into (what is in my opinion) a homogenized, detached, shallow, consumerisitc, suburban wasteland. Its not that most of us mind "Yankees" in small doses, its the elimination of one culture by an uncaring, blind, steamroller of another. In that sense I'm very sympathetic with the Arabs.

Oh and for my credentials, I've lived all my life in the South but have relatives in midwestern and northern states, have studied abroad on two continents and have been "volunteered" to go to a third.

the northeastern liberal attitude for the most part doesnt exist.

and another point, not just people from the south have silly accents and are perceived as hicks so lets not flatter outselves. The people I met from northern New York were the biggest white trash ive met in my entire life.

the NE Liberal attitue may not be the dominant trait, but it does seem to dominate NE politics. Witness Howard Deans courting of the "redneck vote" comments etc.

I agree its there in NE politics. I see it more of a Rich people looking at poor people as white trash. Its a trait that Bush has concealed and is why he has beat out the compitition.

as Jay Leno said when Dean's star was falling and Kerry's was rising, "Well folks, we've gone from a vote between the rich white Yale graduate from Vermont vs. the rich white Yale graduate from Texas (Conneticut) to a vote between the rich white Yale graduate from Mass. vs. the rich white Yale graduate from Texas. This changes everything."

The North is defined by its cities and the South was by its agriculture, hence the divide.

Either way, I'm out on this thread.

So I went to a bachelor party this weekend in D.C. one of the groomsmen was a high school friend of the groom whose folks live in raleigh. I ended up giving him a ride up there to split gas. So this dude lives in Utah, and was going on and on about how he hated the south. So I asked him why he hates the south so much, and he said it was because "everyone in the south is so closed minded."

durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh, and even funnier was his hatred of mormons and other conservative religious groups. The saddest part is that this guy is a Ph.D candidate IN PHILOSOPHY at the Univ. of Utah.

closed minded indeed.

people are close minded everywhere, intolerance goes both ways.

educated people are often intolerant of ignorance, just like uneducated people dislike people they perceive to be know-it-alls

religious individuals condemn non-believers, just as much as those same non-believers call them religious fanatics or bible thumpers

i mean the list goes on and on, but it's easier to call someone else narrowminded, then to take a look at your own biases.

Minnesota isn't the north
its the upper midwest

people in the midwest can be more racist than people in the south
its just covert racism

so the answer is:

they hate you because you're brown

I've been raised and bred all my life in Pennsylvania...

I honestly came to North Carolina expecting to be living in the middle of Hick Country. We didn't even think there would be tall buildings till we came to Charlotte...

But, all my friends from back home are jealous because they think we have THE BEST WEATHER. "Oh my gosh, you must be enjoying the weather down there!!! Are there any malls where you live?" (Mind you this was when I moved to Winston-salem)

There are parts of Pennsylvania that are more hick than anywhere in NC.

Not surprising. Most philosophy these days consists of going along with whatever bullshit is popular.

I do wonder what goes through these people's minds when they say that. Winston has over 150,000 people. What do they envision it as, one big farm?

hahaha seriously, NC is one of the most populated states in the USA.

also, as noted above, Penn has an insane amount of Hicks. Here is my little anecdote...

... driving through the middle of Penn I stopped at a random gas station off the highway. It was around 1 AM and the dude at the register was wearing overalls and a trucker hat and the man he was talking to was wearing the same. As my friend filled up gas I talked to them while I was buying a coke and commented I was from Concord, NC. They both about shit a brick and talked for a good 5 min about how much they wanted to move there and get their race on.

oh and then there are lots of amish people too. Oh and Quaker Steak and Lube, wtf is up with that place.

the difference is you can understand every word they say

I can understand just about everybody in Philadelphia, even the most provincial black folks. When I lived in Raleigh there were several incidents where I simply could not decipher southern black English.

The South blows, end of story. I hate this fucking place and as soon as I graduate, am going to move away and never return. Went to NYC, I love that place. Everyone minds their business, as it should be. No random people trying to talk to you. No cashiers trying to carry on conversation. No guys trying to fight you in order for you to give up your seat to their GF, a pregnant woman, etc. Just awesomeness. Sure, it was a little expensive, but it was worht it. I look forward to moving there upon graduation. NYC FTW!!

AHHAHAHAHA! Thats what people automatically assume, that I'm some disgruntled Northerner. I was born and raised here and hated every year of it. I hate Raleigh. I hate NC. I hate the South. The only reason I am still here, is because of that fact that I was unforntunate enough to be born in this sorry ass state and I stayed to take advantage of the in state tuition. But believe me, I will leave when I get the chance and will never return. I don't care what happens.

I went to Maine last summer, and I had to ask several people to repeat s-l-o-w-l-y so I could understand them. We also talked to a park ranger for a while, exchanging phonics lessons, and what different species of fish were called in our respective areas. people there are some of the nicest i've encountered................even if they can't talk.

I don't think they care. Southern people are the only ones that have pride over being from thier region, I've never heard a Northerner say "Long live the North" or anything like that. Although if you try and tell someone from Virginia that they are from the south they will vehemently deny it.

right because people from Texas have no pride in where they live or came from, or Hawaiians, or people from California, or Chicago, or anywhere else in the country

Only Southerners have pride. Nobody else.
