the lyrics for troublemaker just kill it for me... i can't listen to that bullshit and take it seriously.. "everybody get dangerous" sounds like a bad RHCP song.. "greatest man" is just horrible.. i don't know. i just hate every song on here.. i at least gave Make Believe a few listens when it leaked.. i was pretty into "peace" and "haunt you everyday" when they leaked. i hate all of these new songs, and i don't even feel like i need to listen to them ever again 5/8/2008 4:22:12 AM |

The reason Pinkerton was so great was it literally sounded like the band got drunk off their ass, stumbled into a recording studio, and somehow managed to strike gold. Trying to recapture that is impossible.
Having said that, I'm digging the old-school Weezer guitar muff on "Pork and Beans." Also, "The Greatest Man that Ever Lived" is like 10 songs in one, and all of them are pretty good. Still, while I know that Rivers' lyrics are tongue-in-cheek for the most part, they're incredibly unclever and bordering on idiotic.
Oh well, I'll always have Pinkerton. 5/27/2008 11:50:09 PM |

To the best of my knowledge, Matt left to focus on the Rentals while Weezer was on hiatus in the late 90s while Rivers was at Harvard. When Weezer got back together, Matt was rather disillusioned with the music industry as a whole and decided not to take part. 5/28/2008 9:49:34 PM |

Listen to the Songs From the Black Hole recordings. Then listen to The Rentals.
Rivers worked his ass off on Songs From the Black Hole, then Matt then lifted the entire sound for his own band. Rivers then as a result scrapped Black Hole. There's a lot more to it than that, but I think that was the biggest factor in the fallout. 5/29/2008 11:14:42 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
I don't think Matt "lifted" the SFTBH sound. Return of the Rentals was released as SFTBH was being recorded and had presumably been in the works for a while. 5/29/2008 11:18:48 PM |
Vulcan91 All American 13893 Posts user info edit post |
Well, lifted or not, he beat him to the punch in releasing an album with the same sound and very similar concept; Rivers himself alluded to this as the reason why he abandoned SFtBH.
Also, Rivers was a total douche up until fairly recently I guess. He used to actually fine band members for being out of tune and things like that at concerts. I think Matt got fed up with that kind of nonsense.

Quote : | "When Rivers was asked on a chat room interview what the reason was for not releasing Songs From the Black Hole, he simply stated "ROTR". He was referring to Weezer bassist Matt Sharp's then new band The Rentals, whose first album was titled Return of the Rentals (ROTR). This album was released in 1995, in between Weezer's first two albums.
Cuomo has further hinted that sonically and aesthetically, Sharp's Return of the Rentals borrowed much of its sound from Rivers drafts of Songs from the Black Hole, thus discouraging Rivers from further pursuing the sound out of fear of the public thinking he was "stealing" Matt's sound with the Rentals.
However, some Weezer fans have speculated that originally both Matt and Rivers were writing songs for Songs From the Black Hole. Once Matt decided that he wanted to take his songs to The Rentals, the weight of the album rested solely on Rivers shoulders, and eventually he decided to scrap the idea." |

that was when Rivers was posting on the "RCB board" and members of the board got free tickets to shows on that tour. i couldn't go though, it was in Atlanta

Deluxe tracks (m4a format...)
Miss Sweeney: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7BGR0PDP
Pig: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WSCDCHHK
The Spider: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D7FJ0E0B
King: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BO5PJXG0
lol Miss Sweeney rules I don't care what anyone says. I think I can probably piece together my own 10 song tracklist now that will be listenable from beginning to end.
Pig is pretty similar to the demo but with added vocals and instruments. Still like this song.
Spider on the other hand... good thing this was left off
King redeems Scott as a lead singer, but is still a poor song. I'll replace Heart Songs and Cold Dark World with Miss Sweeney and Pig

James Brown did that, and as a result had the tightest band in the world.
Didn't really work with Weezer, though.
As for Matt Sharp lifting the SftBH sound, I'd say the sound itself was Matt's as much as anyone's. We can argue all day long about who was most responsible for the content, but I've always felt like Matt was the first one to throw the Moog into the mix with Weezer, and that led to ROTR.5/31/2008 10:15:30 AM |

Pretty good review IMO. Obviously I would have given it a higher rating since I enjoy it; probably around a 6 or so, but bump it to a 7 or 7.5 if I can sub in Miss Sweeney and Pig.
The only things I really disagree with them on is their dislike of Dreamin' and The Angel and the One. 6/2/2008 8:20:14 PM |

i don't understand the love (or even mild appreciation) for "Troublemaker." the lyrics are really really bad, the chorus is weak (and cheesy).. it sounds like a band trying to write a catchy power pop song and failing. just a really bland song. i'd give it a .3 out of 10. i do like "pork & beans" though, and parts of "TGMTEL" but that's it
