Vick 8-25 117 yards
OMFG it's the defense's fault. Or maybe the recievers fault for not catching his horrible passes. 9/25/2006 11:39:44 PM |

NFL did what is called in NASCAR "The Call" for the Saints.
"The Call" is a widely acknowledged NASCAR practice where the result that is a miracle and almost too good to be true, usually is.
-Richard Petty winning his 200th career race in front of President Reagan on 4th of July weekend at Daytona. -Jeff Gordon, native Hoosier, winning the inaugural Brickyard 400. -Dale Earnhardt's car winning the first race after his death. -Dale Earnhardt's car winning the first race at Daytona after his death (Michael Waltrip, who wasn't really allowed to celebrate winning the Daytona 500 due to Earnhardt's untimely demise). -Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning in a car in the Daytona 500 that for some reason did not need a draft to go to the front (which flies in the face of how restrictor plate racing works) six years to the day after his dad's win.
Can anyone make sense of these results below if this game was honest?
Saints 19, @ Browns 14 Falcons 20, @ Panthers 6
Saints 34, @ Packers 27 @ Falcons 14, Buccaneers 3
@ Saints 23, Falcons 3 (in the 4th quarter)
And the game is not even as close as that score.
In a business sense you can't blame the NFL. The NFL is trying to define the city's recovery through their league, and that's good for the bottom line. I'm sure in 5-10 years, we will be watching NFL Films highlighting "what a majestic night it was, and the Saints came out on top in the face of the city's adversity against rival Atlanta, bringing a sense of satisfaction and hope for good times to the community, showcasing that the NFL's Saints are the city's team".
It just strikes me as very fishy though, a team in Week 3 equals their win count from last year. Brees and Bush aren't worth that much.
I don't really care, I'm not an Atlanta or Vick fan. But... 9/25/2006 11:42:32 PM |

The Saints defense is totally revamped. Their linebackers are everywhere and their tackles are getting a great push. I saw this in the preseason as well when they were just pushing the Cowboys line back into Bledsoe on every play.
Give credit where credit is due. The Saints are hyped up and they are playing their hearts out. 9/25/2006 11:45:43 PM |

^^ It's not a conspiracy. I'm just saying it's "a miracle result, almost too good to be true".
At the least, the result is being massaged, very NASCAR-like.

i saw some of the worst officiating i'd seen in a long time in NO vs CAR last year. and I don't think that was a coinkydink.
I mean, for God's sake, a saint picked up a flag, twirled it around, and threw it at a panther with no consequence.

if he cared about pride, he wouldnt have "not tried" when the panthers crushed them at the end of last year and would care that his team rarely does better than 8-8 9/26/2006 12:16:51 AM |

you have the most powerful running game in like the history of the nfl, and you don't run. instead, you let a mediocre, at best, qb pass?????? WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
then, you have about 10 dropped passes, most of them from alge crumpler. EASILY CATCHABLE balls too. 9/26/2006 12:18:16 AM |

1. the most powerful running offense in nfl history, which you've shown a commitment to in the two previous games, and then you suddenly switch to a passing game with a mediocre qb???
2. dropped passes. you have crumpler drop atleast 4 catches that he should've caught. jenkins dropped 2 easy ones.
3. suspiciously whiffing on blocks. i saw the tackles look pretty soft on a couple of blocks. then, there were the two completely whiffed blocks on teh blocked punt and blocked field goal attempts. thos two things are pretty rare in the nfl, and yet we get both in the same game... from the saints of all teams.
4. the saints corners were blanketing the receivers. theisman or korneisher even pointed out that it looked like, "the receivers don't appear to be even trying". hmmm...
5. despite having the mediocre passer, a monster running game, receivers dropping the easy catches, and the saints covering the receivers well, you decide to stick with the passing game anyways???? hmmm... again.
6. jackson, btw, did y'all watch him??? he's a 350lb wall, and he was being pushed around like he was a middle schooler by a green o-line.
7. the falcons really weren't trying to run. they also weren't doing their typical runs when they did decide to run. for example, the famous mike vick roll out. i don't think the falcons ran that play once all night. that's their bread and butter play, and they don't run it even once????? c'mon! what about a playaction? i don't recall seeing those either.

haha is this an NCSU game or something? why are we whining that a NFL game was fixed? u actually think 22 grown men are gonna fix a game for one night? this is gay, Nascar maybe, NFL, naaaaah
NO D simply is that good, they have beat quality people each week, they have a good QB in Brees who was on point tonight, a good running game and they controlled the clock.
their D was spectacular as the DE's contained Vick to the inside and let their interior line do the rest, if u can make him a pocket QB u can beat him, its been said TIME AND TIME AGAIN.
this was no fix...this was a great game by NO and a terrible one by atl's offense.

No this doesn't happen constantly.
If the Texans beat the Colts in Week 2, a miraculous upset like that happens occasionally in the NFL.
The difference is that in that case no one outside of Houston would care. Last night, everyone not a Falcons fan wanted the Saints to win. And the Saints, underdogs, destroyed Atlanta. This was not a game, this was a fairy tale. The audience watching last night only wanted one result, and they got their result. The NFL this morning looks very good to the non-football fan cause it was through the NFL that the road to recovery in New Orleans continues.
It could just be that the long snapper turned hard left on that punt and forgot to block the guy that went right past him to block the punt. It could be that Alge Crumpler had the ball all but caught in his hands and dropped the football in the end zone on the Falcons' opening drive. It could be that Michael Vick just had one of his worst games since he came into the league. It could just be that the Falcons had a huge case of Nerves after being in their locker room listening to Green Day and U2. And that is very, very possible and probably is what happened.
However, if you're a cynic for a second, it was certainly very convenient wasn't it? Results in this league have been managed before by organized crime as late as the 1980s, so it's not like it's unheard of.
