I was a fan of Herb's system
Until I saw Lowe coach a few games
And I've watched every game except 1, including the 2 preseason games

I enjoyed parts of Herb's system (ball movement, backcutting, high screens, ect.).
but I hated our lack of a true post presence in the paint, the reliance on the 3, and of course, the ability to be accurately adjust to the style of the opponent.
Lowe has impressed me by finding a way to utilize the strengths on the team. And oh yeah, found a way to solve the 8 minute drought problem (shoot the ball closer to the basket?? what an amazing concept).
obviously we've still got a number of issues, and the lack of depth is going to make the last 5 minutes of games very rough. But with the job Lowe is doing so far, and the splashes he's made on the recruiting front already, I'm feeling very good about the future of the program... 11/28/2006 3:32:39 PM |

Lowe actually made adjustments last night too
And not just switching to zone defense shortly after Atsur went out
Michigan was getting easy wide open layups and the zone switch forced them to shoot threes
Also even though we didnt have Lil Head Ced down low to block shots, some of Ced's block attempts would inevtiably be fouls
With our defense of just standing down low with our arms up, we dont get the blocks, but we do force misses, and more importantly we dont get the fouls
Foul trouble could hurt us bad this year, but thats when its time for Bartosz to wild out 11/28/2006 4:14:02 PM |

we can't accurately judge Lowe vs Herb at this point, but we can make predictions. And my prediction, bassed on what i've seen thus far, is you will all see that Lowe pwnts Herb in almost every facet of the game. Mark it down suckas! 11/28/2006 4:19:31 PM |

I agree that its too early to judge their overall success
However anyone that understands the concept of "numbers" can see that Herb is 3-2 going into tonight's game and Lowe is 5-0. If you have a basic grasp of "numbers" you will see that so far Lowe is better than Herb, at least this season with their respective teams 11/28/2006 4:21:08 PM |

and even if you don't understand numbers, you will notice that, thus far, lowe is running an offense that's fun to watch (i know, shocking). if it's fun to watch, then it's probably fun to play, and if looks fun to play, and it looks like a place where a really good player can look like he's a really good player, then really good players will want to play in it. 11/28/2006 4:22:45 PM |

No shit, because I actually liked our old basketball coach I automatically don't like Lowe. What kind of bullshit is that. Lowe is doing a good job with what he has and I hope things continue to get better, but my God people we have played one good team. It is not time to start boasting.
I really wish Herb would just stop being brought up, because without Herb bringing us back to the NCAA level and top ACC tier, Lowe would have NOTHING to work with.
It is a no-win situation for Herb. If we would have lost every game this year it would have been, look Herb left because he didn't have shit coming back. If we win this year it is going to be look Lowe is soooo much better than Herb. No matter how much you hate(d) Herb, some of success from here on out should be credited to him.11/28/2006 5:29:28 PM |

I'm not completely sold on Lowe yet for the simple fact that it is too earlier in season to make any premature statements. If you want a key example of that, look at the football team after the Boston College and FSU win. I know different sport and different coach but still prime example of why you should make bold predications too early. But I'm not going to diss him either because he is doing good job so far and hope that he continues to do so.
Lowe impress me last night for one thing I hadn't notice clearly but I announcers pointed out, instead of completely coming over and changing the system we have using for the last 10 years, Lowe is using parts of Herb system ( via coach Harris) and parts of his systems to play to each one of players strengths. Oh and give Herb a break, We already ran the man off and it not like he left the program in bad shape. Shot the way some people are talking it left we never won a game while he was here. Sure it wasn't the games that we all wanted to win, but we have to at least give the man credit for rebuilding our program back up to acceptable standards (at least to standards acceptable to everyone outside of Tobacco Road) 11/28/2006 10:10:18 PM |

The system is still vastly different though, I think I only saw someone drive in and then kick it back out for a three maybe two or three times all game. Plus our points in the paint vastly outweigh our three point shooting and we (well Costner and McCauley mainly) actually fight for offensive rebounds and get the putbacks whereas before the whole team was already waiting downcourt by the time another three would clank off the rim. Plus Sidney makes adjustments in game and puts more energy and passion into coaching one game than Herb did an entire season. 11/28/2006 10:17:32 PM |

but after those we were excited about the season at hand. in basketball we're excited about what lowe's going to be able to do when he gets in some solid recruits and such. everyone knows this season is going to be rough.

he left us w/ one player who played more than ~3 minutes per game last year (made up number, but it's low), and, if i'm counting correctly, 5 current players (plus horner who stayed committed) who can actually play in the ACC. he left it in relatively bad shape. that's not even herb bashing, that's just fact.11/29/2006 11:03:16 AM |

Comparatively speaking it isn't in awful shape to what, say ASU, was left with for the Old Coach. I mean we have very highly rated players in Fells and Costner. A decently rated player in McCauley. And two solid, solid vets in Grant and Atsur. Brackman and Simmons leaving is what hurt, and we have NO idea what would have happened had the Old Coach stayed (I tend to think both would have left anyway but no one can say for sure regardless of what they think). Yes, we all think those highly rated players should have played more last year but they didn't. That doesn't mean they aren't good. Look around the league and you'll find some of the best teams have 3 or even 4 new starters, just like us.
Again, we have the talent to compete 1-6/7 when healthy. It all goes back to the depth issue.
