the US is not a police state at all
"The sheriff of [Jefferson Parish] is the closest thing there is to being a king in the U.S. I have no unions, I don't have civil service, I hire and fire at will. I don't have to go to council and propose a budget. I approve the budget. I'm the head of the law-enforcement district, and the law-enforcement district only has one vote, which is me,"

the articles said no guns were confiscated, because they weren't listed in the warrants. both WRAL and the wilmington star reported that 3 longarms were found in Peyton's room, but not anywhere near the boys during the time of the raid. they can't just go in and confiscate things unless they believe they were illegal or used in a crime and stated on the warrant. 12/12/2006 7:37:58 PM

the whole point of me saying that was to rebut halfwit's argument that I was full of shit. most of what he has posted has been pure bullshit coming from someone that hates cops first and has a bleeding heart second. I already mentioned that there is nothing wrong with owning firearms on the first page, but that they would have been mentioned in the warrant had the armed robbery been at gunpoint and not a beatdown. since that wasn't the case, the cops couldn't confiscate them. 12/12/2006 7:47:56 PM

if I had "accidentally shot" someone through a door , I'd be in jail
he needs to be treated like a civilian in a situation where he took someones life because of carelessness
matter of fact, LEOs should be held to a higher responsibility than that 12/12/2006 8:19:27 PM

Exactly, they should be held to a higher standard than civilians because they've been given more power.
I also just want to assert once again... Had they used tazers, neither peyton nor the dog would be dead right now. Also, if cops faced harsh punishments for shit like this I think they'd take tasers into serious consideration for situations like this.
I think a police officer needs to be willing to risk their life to prevent the loss of innocent life. Seems like there was some sort of saying.... "Serve and protect" maybe? Sometimes that means waiting long enough to verify if a subject is a threat, rather than just worrying about your own ass and filling them full of lead. If someone isn't willing to take that risk, they should probably reconsider becoming a police officer IMO.

i think tazers for the swat team would be a horrible idea. if he had been a real threat and actually was shooting at them tazers wouldnt have done shit.
the problem was using such excessive force 12/12/2006 8:31:45 PM

That "wrong checked box" shit sounds like some "hanging chad" bs.
Does anyone really think a second-degree murder charge would really stick? It sounds a lot more like a manslaughter case to me, although my knowledge in this area is pretty limited. Any chance the cop will be charged with something else? 12/12/2006 9:40:17 PM
