Ben McCauley carried us i can't believe how much better he is playing this year in comparison to last year
he looks AMAZING out there and is consistently playing very well
i wish costner wouldnt live up to his nickname "the big lazy" like he did tonight on defense
i can't wait for atsur to return....when the hell is going to get back out there...i've never seen a strained hamstring take this long to heal

Grant only had 4 turnovers, thats an improvement (avg of 5.2 per game). 13 rebounds is a surprise. he had a rough time shooting the ball tho...good thing he turned it on in the end and thank god for the clutch 3 to take us into overtime.
UNCG was 16-36 on 3 pointers...thats not the greatest 3 defense.
Costner was 6-12 on free throws and is only 63.5% on the season. Between the other 5 players though they were a combined 25-26...thats niccccccce.
Another outstanding performance by McCauley...only 2 assists away from a triple double. We would be shit without this guy. 1/2/2007 10:56:07 PM |

our defense on 3's has been brutal all year, first game one player said they were confused b/w what herb showed them and what sid showed them, and we've been getting 3's hit in our face all year...
but overall, i think we're better than expected and i'll be there Sat thinking we win... 1/3/2007 12:33:41 AM |

Yeah whenever we play a team that has good shooters from behind the arc it is a close game. Three defense badly needs improving. Glad it was the win, fairly exciting but disappointing, especially with Costner living up to his 'big lazy' nickname. His performance was nowhere near last game's where he set some personal bests. I don't know what we'd do without McCauley, he's got so many different shots and moves under the basket and has saved our asses on many a play. I'm glad Grant's three went in to tie it but really he has no place trying to shoot threes, he makes just enough of them to where he's gonna keep on trying for them but misses so much that it usually ends up hurting us more than it helps.
^You never know, we came very close to beating UVA at UVA in their new arena to open up ACC play, and that was with our 6 man team at the time. Yes it's going to be very brutal going against the likes of Duke and UNC but that is to be expected this year.

I can say that UNC G played a great game, and they could be a mid-major to watch out for.
But I question if our three point defence is this bad or if people have suddenly gotten better at shooting the 3. 1/3/2007 3:28:08 AM |

And considering that our schedule to this point hasn't been particularly difficult, I'd say it's a pretty good indicator that our perimeter defense really does suck ass. 1/3/2007 5:47:51 AM |

^^Your love for Herb shows in all of your posts. Get over it, he is gone. Deep down you want us to be bad this season so you can say, "I told you so". Shut the fuck up and stop bitching, everyone knew this would be a down season. I'm happy with 10-4 we should be 11-3, but it could be worse considering we haven't had our starting point guard for more than a month. We would have been 14-0 under Herb right?

Yeah that is it. I NEVER bring up Herb. I only defend him. I want us to lose.
Not sure how much better Herbie would be doing, but I do know we would have 2 more players possibly up to 4 more. Plus we would actually be emphasisizing free throws and guarding the 3s.
^Exactly I wish people would quit bringing him up. So what that I liked him? I like Sidney too.

I'm sorry but that's bullshit. Yeah, I'm happy we won but we are acting like a fucking Sun Belt fanbase all of a sudden. There are definitely things to fix that are not completely due to depth [see Rally's thread]. For a fanbase that was always pissed off even when we won games by 15-20 in past years there seems to be an awful lot of sensitivity to even the slightest criticism of this years team or strategy, which I really don't get. The fact is that I don't want the team to get raped come ACC play and if we play like we are right now on the perimeter it isn't going to be pretty.
On offense I'd like to see a little more movement. I know we've been hamstrung by the loss of Atsur but it is way too stagnant and we are getting by on McCauley's athleticism and balls alone. That simply isn't going to cut it when there are guys like Dudley and Marshall on the inside.
Defensively, the guys are switching at the wrong times half the time and not switching the other half. Why on earth Gavin and Fells would feel the need to switch off a guy who couldn't miss if he threw it over his head from 3/4 court is beyond me. That was pretty infuriating. They got better as the game went along at least in that respect but it seems to be a recurring theme this year.
Quote : | "If you can't grasp the idea that fatigue due to lack of recovery time is crucial, then congratulations on being another idiot state fan" |
Again, I don't see many people harping on things that are tied to fatigue. Maybe a few but they certainly aren't the majority. There are things that I feel we can improve on that aren't tied to that. I don't see anyone complaining about our late game troubles against the more athletic teams like UVa and WVU because we realize with a team only 6-7 deep that is going to happen. I really don't see a problem with pointing out things we'd like to see done differently. I'm sure a bunch of 'here come TWW coaches who dont know anything' bullshit will follow this...
-------
As far as the ACC. I think we can beat Miami and Wake. Outside of them, the matchups just aren't too favorable. Duke isn't terribly athetlic so if we catch them on a night where Paulus is off we can hang with them. Unfortunately the biggest mismatch matchup wise is against UNC. I don't think all the motivation in the world can save us from a 20-30 point loss against theam..

We will win some in the conference too. This team will lose some, but they will be fun as hell to watch. They aren't going to back down from anyone and Sid will have them believing they can win.
Last night was a W no matter how you look at it. A loss last night would have been miserable, but after a couple of weeks, nobody will remember what the score of this game was.
We need Atsur back, and it will be a much better team. 1/3/2007 11:24:17 AM |

do you realize that both of these guys are playing pretty much out of position when playing the PG. There is a different strategy on D when playing the 1 compared to playing 3 or 4.
Even Coach Lowe commented on this and had Gavin study an assload of tape on how to properly fight through screens and switching on pick /rolls b/c it was a different style of play. This is what coach Lowe said on one of his shows.

the whole game is tied to fatigue, bryan. when you have 4 players avg. 38+ minutes a game on 3 games / 6 days. not to mention that 90% of our 6 man rotation has been avg. extreme minutes. Gunzz is money in this thread.
Everyone's all like "I know we're going to suck, so it's ok."
Then when we suck everyone is all like "OMG we're sucking. Here's why we suck. We need to defend better."
Bottom line: Could we be playing better? Sure. But we're playing pretty damn good with such a limited roster and the injuries. I'll take 10-3 OOC record smiling and clapping in terms of this season.
I expect 4 wins in conference, maybe 5 or 6 if we get really lucky/gel. Less than 4 would be a disappointment. 1/3/2007 4:13:25 PM |

Some of you guys are still just taking a criticism as an all out attack on the team. I think there are ways we can improve and I'm saying what I think. That doesn't mean I'm disappointed and it doesn't mean that I'm getting on Sidney Lowe.
As I said, for some reason this year, any little criticism is met with a full defense mechanism.

I realize that a lot of it is tied to fatigue. I, as I'm sure you and a lot of other people on here too, have played a lot of basketball and understand the sport, but there are things on defense that I think can be improved even with the lack of depth. The bad switching isn't exclusive to guys who are playing out of position. I consistently saw Fells and even Atsur pre-injury do it as well. I'm no coach but it just seems obvious and even announcers of our last few games have been saying the same thing.
Haha, I was hoping someone would get that.
