Looking at the first page of this thread makes me realize/remember just how exponentially better Black Isle is than Bethseda.

Yeah it's kind of like how watching Jurassic Park reminds me how much better dinosaurs are than humans.

That's a badass clock that comes with the Survival Edition. Maybe I an buy one off of eBay for a reasonable price.

^^ That wasn't Black Isle, it was Reflexive.

They used Black Isle's SPECIAL system, but the Black Isle team wasn't involved, in fact they were disbanded right around that time, and Interplay went bankrupt (or close) fairly soon afterward.

Most of the former Black Isle team went on to Troika and Obsidian.

Yeah, but the Black Isle label was all over it, and look at Troikas games... they were let downs as well, they had potential but that's about it.

About the only way I'm buying this game is if it gets positive reviews from people who didn't like Oblivion, or at the very least felt it had some major flaws. I think the majority of the gaming media in general is wholly incapable of reviewing RPGs.

^^why don't you start your own review blog and focus on RPG...and bring balance back to the force.

You'd be surprised at how many other people might share that same opinion.

I know I never bother to read reviews or scores because its a load of crap half the time.

I think in most people's opinion Oblivion's biggest flaws were:
1. the enemies scaled with you, so there was really no point leveling.
2. the level up and experience system sucks. having to jump around the map and cast 1 hp healing spells on yourself is a terrible way to gain skills.
3. there was no real dialog. Nothing you could say in the game, no matter your persuasion score, to affect a conversation, and that little likability minigame was stupid.

AFAIK, they have said all of these things are changed. There is some level scaling, but it's minimal. The leveling is going to be an experience point based system. And the dialogs look very similar to Mass Effect from what I have seen in the videos so far.

That doesn't really apply when no one that worked on the original series was involved in the development of this one. This is Fallout as imagined by the people who made Morrowind and Oblivion. Which weren't bad games by the way, but they were nothing like Fallout 1 and 2.

^We'll see, I hope you're right. If there is one game coming out this year that I could wave a magic wand over and make awesome, it would be this one.

please, it's fucking Fallout!!!!!!!!!1 blaaaaaaaaaarg!!!

I'm just excited. I know that no one from the first two were involved but I believed them at Bethsa when they said that keeping the game true was their number one priority.

It could be any high production game using any engine and I would be pumped regardless.

for some reason the limited edition worked in that deal so you could get 3 of them for 57 apiece

I am guessing you mean this or Fable II? Fallout 3 by far, you can rent Fable II and get most of the enjoyment out of it sadly, not every open ended nor very long(though more so than the first one).

Course, I haven't played Fallout 3 yet, but I am 99% sure it will be open ended and have a huge amount of replayability.

360 or PS3?

I know all about the the DLC debacle but that's not important to me, since I will end up getting the pc version (one way or another) if I like the game enough. Achievements are also not a big deal to me. Is there any evidence that the graphics will be better for the PS3?

Note: I do not have an hdmi 360 but it outputs (and my tv accepts) 1080p over component cables. The ps3 is hdmi.

Will it even matter?

"war. war never changes."

In 1998 with my $400 IDE 2X burner, I actually rented FO1 from the video place--was it Video Plaza?--off of Kildaire right behind that Wendy's in that Kildaire/Cary Pkwy Shopping Center. (The PC game renting thing didn't work out for them...)

I'm pretty sure I must have ended up buying the games at least twice, since Best Buy had the two comboed in their cheapo section for fucking 9.99 at some point in 2001. my friend and I had bought FO 2 in october 98 which got lost..

there was actually a DEMO for FO1 which involved macgyver's town (that's where you got Dogmeat, wasn't it?), if you can beleive it. because I knew nothing about the game I just shot the town guard and decided the game was gay. I think they raped the shit out of me with their shotguns.

things change!

Leaked review:

http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imgkj5.jpg

OXM review in the upcoming issue.

10/10

The worst of the leaked reviews I've seen so far is from the Polish magazine "Click!"

Here's there score breakdown:

Quote :
" To sum it up, Fallout 3 is not a perfect product and people will be as divided about it after the release as before it. The malcontents will harshly criticize Bethesda for simplifying the gameplay compared to previous iterations of the series, and the PC version will require a patch or two (one is reportedly to be released on day 1). (…) The most important thing is that the makers managed to keep the mature atmosphere of the series and its most important trait - the ability to shape the story yourself. The new game begins (and ends), just like its predecessors, with the legendary words: “War, war never changes.” The same can be said about Fallout.

Fallout 3 is a game different from its great predecessor, but it doesn’t mean it’s worse. It’s just a continuation of the series adjusted to an entirely new age of interactive entertainment - fortunately, it keeps the atmosphere of the originals. Despite minor flaws, it is a strong contender for being the RPG of the year!

Pros:

* A good recreation of Fallout’s atmosphere
* Freedom of play
* The VATS system

Cons:

* Somewhat simplified gameplay compared to previous games
* Slight technical problems

The general score is 8.75/10, broken down into several parts:

* Gameplay - 9.25 (Playability: 9.5, Longevity: 9.5, Variety: 9, AI: 9)
* Graphics - 8.25 (Appearance: 8.5, Animations: 8 )
* Sound - 9.5 (Music: 9.5, Effects: 9.5)
* Technical quality - 7.38 (Fluency: 7, Loading times: 8.5)
"

The primarily took off for animations, "fluency" (I'm guessing translation or frame rate?), and loading times. Other than that it sounds like they consider it a great game. Of course the music scored high- Inon Zur is like the John Williams of video game music.

That kind of concerns me. The whole thing about FO1 and 2 were that they were fairly simple in the first place. I just hope it won't be one of those games you can easily beat in a few hours, regardless of the path you've chosen.

^^ Has about 100 hours of game play. Should last 6 weeks, and that's straight grinding on it everyday. Just farting around looking for stuff will add a lot of time to this.

I'm pretty sure there's nowhere near that much gameplay. I've heard the main quest is actually quite short.

I'm expecting 30 or so hours of total playtime.

Outside of chugging some beers what'd he miss?

On a more serious note, I've never played a Fallout game before, but the beginning of this game is pretty cool. The Vault you're in to start has the same kind of feel that Doom 3 had (excluding the whole Hellspawn coming to kill you thing). It's just dark, cramped, and slightly unsettling for some reason.
