Haha you amuse us. You obviously know little about the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District and it's history. I've personally known the last few superintendants of Charlotte Mecklenburg schools ever since i can remember. You picked the wrong person to argue with in regard to public schooling.
Learn some history: http://www.travellady.com/Issues/May05/1506Charlotte.htm
Quote : | "Today, lofty, high-rise office buildings dot the city’s skyline. The city has a population of 580,000 people and is home to 300 of the Fortune 500. The downtown area is immaculate. There are no peddlers on street corners or homeless people seen in this modern metropolis." |
aww 300 of the top 500? Hmm.
Charlotte was one of the most important cities in the south in terms of desegregation laws. I personally went to Irwin Ave Elementary (used to be Harding Highschool) so i'm familier with the history.
More history for you:

Read up on schools before you bash the nations 23rd largest school system, and the largest in NC. Ya know like Dorothy Counts at Harding and so forth?

Haha enough said. You don't have an opinion. We've already established you can't debate in this thread without living in both cities for more than a couple years. I have 21 years in Charlotte, and 4 in Raleigh.
Let put this in perspective, you're probably a great person so consider this: someone who's never lived in Raleigh before says to you "I've never lived in Raleigh cause it fucking sucks."
What would YOU say to that? Would you believe they had ANY credibility? Probably not.

Any list online lists Charlotte's "metro" area quite a bit larger than Raleigh's "metro area". Around 500,000 people larger in fact." |
POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY POPULATION DENSITY
The numbers are skewed because when talking about metro areas the charlotte area is considering a much much larger area than the raleigh area and the triangle area. Do the math. Higher population density throughout so if you consider the same radius raleigh wins
Quote : | "charlotte is 280 sq miles
raleigh is only 130
this makes charlotes density 2515 people per sq mile while raleigh has a whopping 2674 people per square mile. THATS OVER 150 EXTRA PEOPLE PER SQUARE MILE." |
the triangles population doesn't stop any sooner than charlottes so much of it is not even counted in things like this. thats why population density is the thing to go off.
its like in basketball if you take 20 shots in a game and i take 10. you make 10 shots while i make 9. you could sit heere and say "i made more shots than you" but in reality i was much better and if you looked at my next 10 shots i would dominate

BridgetSPK,
Your fault is you've never lived in Charlotte and you blindy bashed it.
In this ENTIRE thread i've NEVER said Raleigh was a horrible city, or blows, etc etc. I love both cities and i've said that multiple times. I've lived in Charlotte for 20+ years, and Raleigh for almost 4. I like both cities for different reasons. I don't blindy bash either one.
The ONLY thing i was objecting to, like everyone else, was that you were bashing Charlotte when you haven't lived there. I don't care if Charlotte is the worst place on EARTH to live, you can't bash it unless you've lived there.
I respect your opinions in regard to Raleigh, and i probably agree with most of them, but i can't relate to your opinions of Charlotte unless you've lived there, or spent a significant amount of time there.

You generalize so much. You can't say one city is better for any particular person for EVERYTHING. There's stuff in Charlotte that appeals to people more than Raleigh, and there's stuff in Raleigh, that appeals more to other people than stuff in Charlotte. There's particular things i'd rather do in Raleigh, while there are other things i'd rather do in Charlotte. You're still bashing it after never living there.
Charlotte beats Raleigh in plenty "lists" online. It demolishes Raleigh in regard to fortune 500 companies among many things. Raleigh beats Charlotte in plenty of lists too. It's silly to judge a city based upon some list you read online rather that judging it for yourself (as an intellgent human being). If you REALLY wanna bash Charlotte go live in Elizabeth or Dilworth for a few years, THEN you can bash Charlotte. I gurantee you'd have a good opinion about BOTH cities like most people here who've lived in both cities.
I'm going to make the assumption that there's not a single person who's lived in both cities for a while in great neighborhoods (not in the suburbs) that would blindly bash the city like you have done. It just doesn't happen.
^i love Raleigh, but yeah most of my friends and I regard it as a "small town". If you look at all those posts in this thread in regard to statistics you'll see that Raleigh is always listed as a "midsize" city, while Charlotte is listed as a "large" city.7/26/2007 5:54:41 PM |

2 cents: i grew up in charlotte, went to state for 5 years, moved back to charlotte for a job and i've been back for a year now. i couldnt wait to get out of raleigh after 5 years, i've been to a lot more bars here in a year than i have in raleigh for 5 (saucer, mitchs, sammys, ri rahs, ...jax?, you get the point). felt like i was going to the same places over and over again. charlotte is more of a "professional's town" whereas raleigh is the "college town." granted uncc sucks compared to the likes of state, unc, and duke. but raleigh's professional opportunities blow in comparison to charlotte's. BofA, Wachovia >>>>>>>>> RBC in just one industry example. the sports teams are big too, namely the panthers, thats a huge plus for CLT. the bobcats suck and dont really have a hardcore fanbase, just socialites who like to be seen at games so theyre about equal in improving the "city-ness" like the 'canes do for raleigh. stanley cup champs, indeed awesome, but its a smaller fanbase over the whole of the country since NBA > NHL.

Raleigh cracks the Top 50 most populated cities in the U.S. List. We are the 9th most populated city in the south.
Last year we surpassed Tampa, Fla., Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and St. Louis in population!!
Quote : | "Raleigh Population Cracks U.S. Top 50
Thousands of new residents in recent months have pushed Raleigh into the Top 50 cities nationwide in terms of population, city officials said Friday.
The Planning Department's Growth Management Division estimated Raleigh's population as of July 1 reached 367,995 people, a 4 percent increase from the estimated 353,600 city residents a year ago.
Estimates are based on the number of dwellings, the average number of people per dwelling, and the dwelling occupancy/vacancy averages.
The growth pushed Raleigh past Wichita, Kan., to become the 50th-largest city in the country.
Raleigh is now the ninth-largest city in the South behind Jacksonville, Fla.; Memphis, Tenn.; Charlotte; Louisville, Ky.; Nashville, Tenn; Atlanta; Virginia Beach, Va.; and Miami.
“Raleigh continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States,” Raleigh Planning Director Mitchell Silver said in a statement. "If our growth rate continues, we project that Raleigh will pass Arlington, Texas, Minneapolis and Colorado Springs, Colo., next year.”
In 2006, Raleigh passed Tampa, Fla., Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and St. Louis in population, Silver said.
The U.S. Census Bureau’s population estimates lag one year behind local estimates.

heh that point was lost a while ago. Go to ANY list online and Charlotte is WAAAAY larger than Raleigh in terms of like 500,000. Both the metro statistical area, AND the city limits area tag Charlotte as WAAAY bigger than Raleigh.
Not to mention all these lists online tag Raleigh as a "mid-size" city, while they all tag Charlotte as a "large" city.
You can say you think Raleigh is bigger than Charlotte all you want, but you'll be wrong in relation to everyone else. Find a single list online that puts Raleigh larger than Charlotte. Doesn't happen.
Quote : | "What he's saying is a much larger area is always considered when talking about Charlotte so the population numbers are higher than they should be" |
WHAT??? That makes NO sense. The city limits are "higher" than they should be? Are you defining what city limits should be?
Boulder, Colorado has a density of 3,884.7/sq mi but only a population of 91,685. Does that mean it's bigger than Raleigh AND Charlotte simply because the pop. density is higher?

Here's a few things worth noting, if you base a city's size on population density:

I'm not trying to argue that he's right, lol. But sometimes a more compact city can see more "big" just through local perception. It doesn't work for raleigh & charlotte though. 8/3/2007 1:35:00 PM |

Either way his argument doesn't make any sense though. Charlotte's pop. density is 2,515.7/sq mi and Raleigh's pop density is 2,674.80/sq mi but Charlotte has a city limit area of 280.5 sq mi while Raleighs city limits are only 134.34 sq mi.
So lets look at this logically. The pop density of Charlotte is from an area more than twice as large as the area they take for Raleighs pop. density. So obviously if you take a smaller cut of a city it's pop. density might be higher. Look at the numbers, the pop. densities are almost the same, whereas Charlotte's city limits are twice that of Raleigh's.
So if we REALLY wanted to take a logical look at pop. density we'd have to take a SAME SIZE cut of each city, and looking at the numbers i'm sure Charlotte would probably more than double the pop. density of Raleigh. I know from experience that downtown Charlotte probably has more people in one or two buildings than Raleigh has in it's ENTIRE downtown as TreeTwista10 pointed out.
It's stupid to compare two different pop. densities when the city limits are completely different. You'd have to compare the same square milage and THEN take a look at the population density. Remember it's an average of people per square mile, so obviously if you take a chunk of land more than twice the size, you might get a smaller pop. density. 8/3/2007 2:05:55 PM |
Howard All American 1960 Posts user info edit post |
Treetwista is silly. He's comparing cities of 3 million to cities of 100k. This comparison obvioulsy only works when comparing two cities that are similar and both the main city in their area.
and if you take charlottees city limits down to 140 you're going to lose 1/3rd of its population. Everythingg is skewed. don't even look at county or metro area because when they say metro area of charlotte they are talking about an area about 4 times the size as raleigh's. The only way to do it is to compare Charlotte's city population to Raleigh's metro area and you get Raleigh unless you want to do metro areas and include johnson franklin harnett orange durham and a bunch of other places like they do for charlotte.
I'm also pretty sure the largest two buildings in downtown charlotte don't have more people than downtown raleigh because they aren't THAT much bigger than the two buildings in Raleigh and the rest of them are enough to catch raleigh up.
In five years Raleighs downtown will catch up anyway and its only behind because all the buildings are in rtp which doesn't count in the raleigh numbers btw. 8/3/2007 2:19:13 PM |

HAHA how often do YOU actually go to Charlotte. You realize that Charlotte's downtown completely demolishes Raleighs. The Bank of America is 871ft tall with 60 floors.
While Raleigh's tallest building is GOING to be the RBC Centura building with 29 floors. Is that right? I didn't do too much research on that but it seems 29-33 is the highest i get from Raleigh.
Even the SMALL skyscrapers in Charlotte are taller than 30 stories. Haha. SO YES i would STILL make the judgment that there's more people in one or two of Charlotte's MANY 40-60 story buildings than in the ENTIRE Raleigh uptown area.

Forgot. TWICE AS TALL. MUCH MUCH WIDER. How is that not bigger? What is your definition of "bigger"?
Oh and the Hearst tower pwns any building in Raleigh. It's got 24,000sq/ft in it's upper floors, but only 20,000sq/ft in it's lower floors. Ponder that.
