I found that to be a very key closing moment to their current cycle on their path to enlightenment, matching up well with the Bill Murray scene at the beginning which I interpreted as the end of their last cycle, father dies.3/4/2008 11:57:58 AM |

He asked if it was heavy handed, to me it wasn't, it fit in perfectly with the opening of the movie. What are you getting at here? 3/4/2008 2:48:55 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
What I'm getting at is that the line itself, and not the concept, is heavy-handed. We can all see the metaphor that's going on with the baggage...it's a nice metaphor. We can all see that the opening sequence of the movie is being echoed...it's a nice touch. The line is unnecessary.
Furthurmore, if the brothers just glanced at each other and then glanced at the bags before dropping them, it'd be a more effective callback to the opening, because Brody doesn't say a word to Murray in the first slow-motion shot. ] 3/4/2008 3:26:31 PM |

Right, but his post didn't reference the line, just the metaphor as being heavy handed, otherwise I would not have stated what was obvious to us. I got confussed at first when you called it the "line", thinking that you meant I was giving everyone a line, but now assume you meant, "We're gonna have to lose the bags if we're going to catch the train...," or something to that effect. A glance would have been nice too, but Francis was always the organizer/talker of the group so it fit in.
Aside from that, what does everyone think about the tiger motif of the last train and the portrait of the guy above them? Does anyone know who that is?

All I found were references to the tiger in Indian culture as symbols of strength and natural beauty, which works with the other themes.
Aha, durr, just on a whim I looked up pictures of Satyajit Ray, bingo. That's a very cool way to honor the guy who inspired your film.

I do not recommend trying to watch this movie while drunk...it was a bad idea.
I had to tape my eyelids open and must have missed everything that was good about it.
I woke up thinking this was the worst Anderson movie yet....but everyone seems to like it.
Guess I'll give it another shot sometime.... 3/5/2008 10:22:56 AM |

I just watched it, did not care for it. Had some interesting moments, but eh. I also watched Bottle Rocket not too long and can't remember one decent laugh in the whole thing. Same deal with Rushmore. Flame away, I don't give a fuck.
I do love the Royal Tenenbaums though. 4/12/2008 11:36:39 PM |

This movie sucked huge balls and I love Wes Anderson.
My dislike of the film really boils down to his incompetent treatment of the Indian boy's death. I mean, it really didn't feel like anything tragic happened. It was really just a way for the Whitmans to resolve their own issues quickly. And did Wes really have to put The Whitmans walk to the boy's funeral in slow-mo with an upbeat pop-tune going in the background (gee, he's has never used this trick before)?
Really Really subpar. Anyways, here's my list.
1) Rushmore 2) Tenenbaums 3/4) Bottle Rockets or Life Aquatic (it depends on my mood) 5) That American Express Commercial 6) Darjeeling Limited 4/13/2008 12:12:35 AM |

^ agreed. i too was a huge fan of Bottle Rocket and Tenenbaums (and i kinda liked Life Aquatic) but Darjeeling blew. i think it was really meant to be a chick flick, because there was so much facetime with those three clowns. it just seemed forced, and unless you really have some great undying lust for one or more of them, you get nothing out of the majority of the scenes. 4/13/2008 8:08:39 AM |
