51GB HD-DVDs aren't on the market right now you fucking dolt.
Yea, they've also made 200GB Blu-Rays and 1TB Holographic discs, so they're also "coming".
The truth is HD-DVD's biggest release is gimped b/c it is an inferior format as of this writing.

OK you win... Which HD-DVD release is on a 51GB disc again?
Oh, right... NONE
My last post was in reply to Stein, who was trying to counter my "stay in the now" point by stating that 51GB discs have been developed. And my counterpoint is: Big Whoop, they've 'developed' all kinds of shit, including Blu-Rays with capacities HD-DVD hasn't even begun to dream about.
And I stand by my point: Looking at it right now, HD-DVD IS gimped. They had to cut content that would've been on the Blu-Ray version of the film to get it to fit on an HD-DVD.
Are you guys really this stupid? This is like trying to argue that your 2GB flash drive can hold more content than my 4GB

Honestly, the last thing either format needs right now is another revision in disc standards. If you think 51GB HD DVDs will play in all current HD DVD players with no problems, you're kidding yourself. If by "compatible" they mean the first two layers will be read, then sure, but most experts in the industry have agreed that at the very least the drive assembly will have to updated to be able to read the third layer. Not a firmware update, an actual physical change to the hardware.
You're also kidding yourself if you think any movies will be coming on 51GB HD DVDs in the near future. It's not like Toshiba can wave a magic wand and make studios start supporting them. It's 100% up to the company releasing the films, and it's highly unlikely that these movie studios which are all hemorrhaging money are going to invest in yet another (more expensive) disc standard for a market that is still years from becoming relevant.
It makes for nice headlines to suck in morons like ^^ into saying shit like "lol 51GB > 50GB", but the reality is that it's going to have almost no impact on current state of the "war". 10/19/2007 2:24:32 PM |

well then there's not much hope in the consumer market for Blu-ray as the xbox360 and ps3 and no relevance whatsoever in the real world market. i don't even see how they can be counted as part of the adoption of the formats as a very little percentage of people actually use them for a standalone player... video game consoles are not what's going to dictate the winner of the format war.

3 years after the fact.... just in time for GT5, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and a little game called Final Fantasy (XIII)
currently it's still a close competition, how long it will stay that way, probably less than 2 years... probably when a major studio group drops one format exclusivity / changes camps

If you're a big fan of Heroes and own an XBox 360, then now would be a great time to jump onto the HD DVD bandwagon.
Best Buy (and other retailers) are offering the 360 HD DVD add-on, King Kong HD DVD, 5 free additional HD DVDs and Heroes Season 1 on HD DVD for $180. Considering that the Heroes DVDs are about $100 at most retail stores, it's a pretty sweet deal. 10/22/2007 11:39:37 AM |

^^yeah exactly, because the Xbox will still be ahead of the PS3 as a gaming console. So it really won't tip the balance in any different direction than its already in.
Adding built-in HD DVD drives will just be a nice touch...pouring salt on sony's wounds.

^^ Not sure who you're directing that to, but as far as "the battle" goes, Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 2:1 still. If anyone is currently "winning" then that would be blueray-not that it matters. That being said, the "battle" will probably conclude similar to how the "+R/-R" battle concluded. Not sure why you're so hyper-sensitive about HD-DVD though. It's kind of gay.
^In all fairness, the cost I will have paid for an HD-DVD player is roughly similar to what I would have paid for a PS3 anyways. Cost of entry, even with deals, is still within 80 bucks of each other give or take. Arguing clear superiority of either choice is somewhat of an empty position. The only things either side has going for it in any practical sense comes from a very small number of exclusive titles. While the HD-DVD exclusives are generally better than the Bluray ones, they're not so great as to have any real bearing on my decision. Transformers was good and all, but I don't need to see it any more times.

wow amazing how you twist my statements to support you.
but i digress
i dont think this format 'war' will end until all the major studios pick a side, universal the only one being in the hd camp...
i have no interest in xbox, content, abilities, or add ons. nothing about it does it for me. (xbox+addon >= ps3 cost with nothing extra needed) and you've see how well major add on's have gone for companies like sega...
aren't blu-ray discs still outselling hd-dvd? aren't there more movies on blu-ray?

Yeah, those new statements pretty much prove his original blog post berating Paramount for going HD DVD represented his true feelings on the subject, and he was pressured into backpedaling afterwards. Everyone already knew this though.
