^ not nescessarily. Maybe fuel centerline temp, but zirc cladding limits the temperature. Coal plants can get stupidly hot by comparison because they use ferritic-martensitic tubes- thick ones too.
The coolant temp in super critical water cooled coal plants can be up to 760 C.

Good summary of next gen reactor ideas (next gen being a sort of flexible term- some are very far off if not kind of silly compared to some of the current new stuff.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_IV_reactor#Supercritical-Water-Cooled_Reactor_.28SCWR.29
The big challenge with these reactors is the lack of data on current materials. The kinds of trial and error that got us to where we are now in terms of materials selection would not be acceptable for a new plant. Using the spallation neutron source and some other test facilities, MSE and NE people will have to figure out what materials will work in some of these plants for us to reap the higher efficiency.

hmm that actually looks pretty promising. good thing they keep it in an enclosed system. doesntin supercritcal water crawl out of a cup? 11/21/2007 4:47:02 AM

Just clearing up some pulstar details...
The chimney is not used for cooling at all - there is a dedicated cooling tower behind the building (it's not a very big one, obviously).
Quote : | "There's never steam since it's a pressurized water reactor with no secondary (steam) side. " |
It does indeed have a secondary side, but again, at no point is there any steam. 11/23/2007 10:52:53 AM

Ahaha, I remember there was a CANDU design that was going to be modified/offered for the American market. That was until they found out that it did not, despite what the people offering it claimed, have a negative void coefficient. That's the kind of shit that gets you blacklisted. 1/31/2008 12:50:46 AM

it's not a bad design, and there should be no reason they can't be built here. But honestly, the U.S. is simply not a good market for them.
Fuck, just sell them all to China, their energy market is like a bottomless pit. 1/31/2008 1:37:01 AM

Yeah but it's hard to sell a reactor when it is found that you either miscalculated or lied about something as important to reactor control as the void coefficient. Hell, numbers will be rough in early design phases sure, but you should at least get the sign right- especially when its mandated by US regulation. 1/31/2008 7:04:54 AM

Its condensate not steam thank you, and you don't want to see it blowing out of your towers anyway because it means you need more make-up water. 1/31/2008 7:24:27 AM
