The Barrett is good, but I'm still disappointed that you HAVE to hit someone in the head to one-shot them. I haven't unlocked any of the pump-action shotguns, as I am completely in love with the USAS-12. I've got 220 kills with it, which is over double what I have with any other gun. I did unlock the UMP, and that thing is a beast. High rate of fire, good control, and good accuracy in bursts.
As to how this compares to BF2, there are a few substantial differences.
- No jets. This sucks, since I used to use the jets all the time. They were fairly overpowered, though, so I guess this is a sacrifice to placate the masses.
- No claymores. Honestly, this is a WTF for me. What could be the single most useful tool for crate defense isn't in this game. I'd gladly trade the Recon's laser target designator for claymores. On the other hand, though, if there were any claymores in this game, I'm sure people would abuse the hell out of them. Still, with destructible environments, it'd be almost impossible to put out enough claymores to cover all potential entry points.
- No transport helicopters. This one surprises me, as these would also be extremely useful in Bad Company. Maybe the programmers felt that they weren't necessary since you can spawn on any member of your squad.
- No sidearms with kits (Recon is the exception). This promotes a much greater sense of "readiness" in that if your weapon isn't locked and loaded and pointed at an enemy, then you're probably going to lose that fight the second you spot someone. You can't just shoot your gun dry to try to close the distance on someone and then draw your sidearm to finish them off when you're close. This readiness also means that sometimes you have to consider if running in a direction will get you killed because your weapon is lowered.
- Destructible environment totally changes combat tactics. There truly are very few choke points on most maps. Crates are either captured or defended depending upon the coordination level of the team. If you cant get to a crate, then you're either not thinking out of the box, or the enemy team is working together so well that they're actually repelling all assaults. (This is rare.) And even if you can't physically get to the crate, you can always try to brute force destroy it with a tank. I love trying to figure out new ways to get to a crate without being seen. It's rare that you wind up doing the same thing over and over, which I found happened a lot in BF2.
With all of this having been said, this is definitely one of my favorite Battlefield games of all time.7/3/2008 3:45:08 PM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
Oh yeah. I've been experimenting with C4 on crates. Putting 5 blocks on a crate will knock off just over 1/2 of a crate's health. If you can get 2 Specialists working together, you can sap crates long before the defending team has a clue what's going on.
The problem I have is that when you plant a block of C4, you immediately pull out the detonator. You have to press X to pull out another block, and then plant it with the trigger. I have my trigger button mapped to left click, and my X button mapped to a side button on the mouse. More often than not, I try to plant all 5 blocks so quickly that I wind up accidentally pressing the detonator before it's been switched out with another block. 7/3/2008 3:52:01 PM |

Sometimes when I play this game, I just don't understand what some people are thinking. Is the learning curve really so high, or are the tutorials and explanations just not clear enough? I played a couple of games tonight with some flat out horrible teams, and I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks about the play system and displays. The information is there, but I think a lot of people are overlooking it.
- I don't know if this works or not, but I've been trying to tag helicopters with the Specialist's dart gun. There are some instances in which you get pushed into a zone with no AA, and I was wondering if there was a better way to take down a helicopter than just Support fire. The problem with the dart gun is that you don't immediately know if you successfully tagged something.
- Unlocked the SVU. It's crap. It seems weaker than the Find All Five sniper rifle.
- Unlocked the NS2000. That gun is odd. I want to call it bullshit since it seems able to one-shot kill from SO much further away than the other shotguns. It absolutely will not replace the USAS-12 for me, though, as the ability to kill one person with one shot does not impress me unless you can do it quickly. Does anybody have the SPAS-15? How does it compare to the USAS? 7/6/2008 4:17:25 AM |
seedless All American 27142 Posts user info edit post |
the svu is a very good sniper. it great for defending snipers for close range engagements. if this sniper, semi-auto, had the power of the rest of the sniper rifles then everyone would use it and that would not be fun. the ns2000 is pretty good to me, i like. i am not a huge fan of semi-auto shotties but they are good weapons. i really just prefer the straight up pump shotty overall. 7/8/2008 3:13:48 PM |

I dunno, I just can't stand either of those. I'm so used to how effective the Barrett and the USAS are that I just can't use anything else.
- I have seen firsthand this evening that Demolitions can take out crates faster than Specialists can. Sure enough, you drop mines right in front of the crate, back off, and then throw a rocket into the whole pile. The explosion does about 3/4 damage on a crate, and it takes one more rocket to crack it completely.
- I've only got 1 more gun to unlock. I never see anybody use the PP2000, so I have no idea whether or not it's worth it. Figured I'd save it for last.
- I wish that whenever someone takes a fast attack boat, they wouldn't ground it. Having a mobile semi-automatic grenade launcher can be a real benefit for taking out crates. Hell, on Valley Run you can almost always take Crate 1 uncontested by just parking the boat in front of the house it's in and then fragging the crap out of it. People never seem to realize that the boat is capable of that - especially on that map.
- Finally remembered to take a picture of something to test if I can post 'em somewhere.
Not very exciting, unfortunately.
- Still haven't figured out if Specialists can tag helicopters while they're airborne so missiles can home in on them. 7/9/2008 2:43:17 AM |

Y'know, I'm learning that the laser-guided JDAM isn't as powerful as I originally thought. The key to defeating it is twofold: timing, and continuously moving. Light vehicles are usually fast enough that they can get away with little trouble. If your jeep gets bombed, well, you were sitting still. Tanks are a bit more tricky. I've learned a really good trick which works about 75% of the time. When you get locked onto, wait about 2-4 seconds and then pop smoke. Give the sniper time to "commit" to the drop so that his view changes to the bomb's view. If you have a building nearby, bail out of the vehicle and then wait for the bomb to drop. I find that more often than not, the sniper is so much more interested in dropping the bomb on you than on the vehicle that they usually aim your way instead of the vehicle. They can't track where you are in the building, so you're relatively safe there (especially if it's a 2-story building and you're not standing right beside the window). You may or may not lose your vehicle, but you will almost always survive and continue to let your squad spawn on you. I had a guy try 4 times in a row to JDAM me only to have me smoke out, bail out, and run away. He didn't think to bomb the tank, which I would promptly run back to and continue to shell the crap out of the enemy base.
My main problem with the JDAM is that I can't guide it worth a damn with my mouse adapter. It just doesn't like the vertical sensitivity change.
And now, more of Axelay's general combat tips.
- One serious risk as a vehicle driver is bunching up with other vehicles. Sometimes a clever sniper will paint one vehicle, and then drop the bomb on another so that there's no warning. It's just good sense to try to take your tank in another direction from another tank. Try not to fall into a choke point trap if you can.
- Don't forget that snipers can also paint defensive emplacements (mounted grenade launchers, TOW launchers, machine guns). I forget whether or not the user gets a warning when they're locked onto.
- The Bradley has an exceptional ability to avoid JDAMs because it has a much higher tight turn radius than the other light tanks. I love the Bradley for this. The other light tanks seem to have a much harder time avoiding the bomb because they get hung up more often on obstacles in close quarters. 7/9/2008 7:14:33 PM |

Ding, General of the Army. Gonna go try out the Gold weapons now.
This is the single finest sniping spot I have yet to find in the game. It's so simple it's almost astonishing. I've only been picked out of here one time, and that was by a guy who managed to get on top of the oil tank down range almost opposite of this position (to the left of the reticule in this photo).
From this location (on Deconstruction, I believe the map is called) you can cover both crates, and can throw motion sensors far enough near each crate that your teammates will hopefully come running if they see red. The only bad thing about this spot is that the ammo crate is so far away... 7/14/2008 1:46:21 AM |

I also haven't played minute one of the single player campaign. I honestly doubt that I will since I just enjoy multiplayer too much. Once you get used to fighting real people, it's not as interesting playing the computer. That's what pissed me off so much about the single player in COD4 - the rampant "cheating" the computer would do. When enemies miraculously appear out of rooms or areas that you've already cleared, it's just not fun.
The gold weapons so far are amazingly good. I've only used the SPAS-15 and the MG3. I never would have believed it, but the SPAS-15 is better than the USAS-12. It seems to do more damage and definitely fires faster. It only has an 8 round magazine as opposed to a 10 round, though. The MG3 is fun mainly because of its ridiculously high rate of fire. For something that shoots as fast as it does, it also seems to be very accurate.
I hope that DICE will get around to doing expansion packs for this game. I really want claymores, but I seriously doubt that they'll implement them. 7/14/2008 4:23:25 PM |

Bad Company is definitely equal and in some ways better than all of the other BF games I've played so far. Each one has its own special features which make it great, but this one particularly lacks the outright cheating and hacking. Best thing about this is that the destructible environment makes camping and spawn killing a lot less likely. I can't really point at any one thing in Bad Company and say "that is completely unbalanced."
I do wonder how play mechanics are going to change once Conquest mode is available...

i am starting to get really bored with this game. needs more maps and different modes. also, i am tired of killing defenders and they are not being 'punished' extensively as the attackers are for getting killed. i really really like this game, but that is slowing waning due to the lack of maps (only 8 maps out of the box - weak) and only one mode. in addition to all of this, any mp game with a straight-up team deathmatch seems kinda whack. 7/15/2008 9:05:02 PM |

I'm not so much bored with this game as I am frustrated by the people who play it. It's unreal to me how many Support players I see who never throw out medikits. Even more amazing is that I see so many Recon players who have no clue just how powerful the motion sensor is. Hell, on some maps, I get so pissed by my team's sorry defense that I find the nearest ammo crate and just spam motion sensors non-stop to try to give them a clue where to go to shoot the fucking attackers. It's not always about points - it's about winning.
I have found Specialist class to be completely worthless now that I know Demolitions can blow crates faster (and without accidental C4 detonation). Sneak in to the box, drop 5 mines on it, and then shoot the pile with your rocket launcher. It only takes 1 more rocket and 2 shotgun shells (with the USAS or SPAS, anyway) to blow the box entirely.
Wonder how much longer it will be before Conquest mode goes live? 7/17/2008 12:46:52 AM |
CarZin patent pending 10527 Posts user info edit post |
I think you are wrong about the specialists class. If you are worried less about points, and more about team play, you can essentially make the armored vehicles useless with the specialist class. I spent two matches yesterday, on an organized squad, tracer locking tanks. The demo guys would blow the tanks up in one hit. I actually got a decent amount of points with it through awards.
I also love running up to a tank, slapping on the C4, then blowing it. 7/17/2008 9:15:04 AM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
While it's true that the dart gun can be useful, I find it to be far too situational. More often than not, I find that the lock-on screws up my missile's trajectory as it flies into an obstacle on its way to the marked tank rather than just taking the straight shot that I wanted. If only it'd work like a Javelin whereby the missile would fly straight up and then down onto the tank, that'd be perfect.
The other serious problem is that now that armored vehicles have a radar, it makes it quite a bit harder to sneak up on a tank to C4 it. If you're up against an observant tank driver, you're going to have trouble getting to it. This is especially true of light tanks since they are faster to accelerate and turn (well, the Bradley is anyway). I'd much rather go with mines and the rocket launcher.
I STILL have yet to see if airborne helicopters can be tagged with the dart gun... 7/17/2008 2:53:10 PM |

I'm Silent Scope EX. I talk it up ALL the time, and you'd be hard pressed to find someone as dedicated to defense as I can be. I'm a fair sniper, and I'm all about throwing motion sensors and medikits whenever I get a chance.
I've switched back to the USAS-12 now. I have found that it has slightly greater stopping power than the SPAS-15, it has 2 more shells per magazine, and its slower rate of fire helps to get more accurate shots. Plus, I've already got 320 kills with it, so it's gotta be pretty damn good. 7/18/2008 2:39:01 AM |

The content will include the traditional Battlefield multiplayer game mode, Conquest. Conquest focuses on the capture and control of flags; once a team captures a control point, its members can re-spawn in the area. Maintaining control over the flags on the battlefield is a key to victory and the ability to re-spawn troops close to the battlefront can make all the difference for that last offensive push. Played some Conquest tonight and found it... interesting. Suddenly now there's an increased sense of utility for the Assault class. Jeeps in this mode seem to be strangely resilient - I have been having to put 2 rockets into Humvees and their counterparts to take them out. People seem to instantly think that now that conquest mode is back, they can go Recon and camp out for the entire fucking match... and they're usually right. Nothing's worse than wanting to be super aggressive and cap flags and you keep having to spawn on the dumbass camping sniper in your squad. Being able to still only talk to your squad is helluva frustrating, especially when you're spread all over the map. I thought this was supposed to be fixed? 8/8/2008 2:37:56 AM |
