I'm already up to 2000 songs for my 1-1/2-hour block If I could get my HDD back from JOEL, then I'll really be set.

So let me get this straight...we will be able to play any song we want? There won't just be a list that we can select from?

if you want to go ahead and take some preliminary steps to get your computer ready to broadcast, do the following:

since the main streaming server will be connecting to your computer to serve the stream, we need to know what your IP address is all the time. most connections to the internet use DHCP, or dynamic host configuration protocol, so your IP address does not always remain the same.

to keep track of this, you need to sign up for a dynamic DNS account. for simplicity's sake, i'll be going over the process at http://www.no-ip.com/. you don't have to use no-ip. if you know what you're doing (or already have a dynamic DNS hostname or a static IP address), just keep doin ya thing and just let me know what your hostname is.

  1. sign up for an account at http://www.no-ip.com/newUser.php

  2. check your email for a message entitled "No-IP.com Activation"

  3. open this email and click the link below "To activate your account please click the following URL:"

  4. on the "Account Confirmed!" page, go ahead and log in with the email and password you registered with. the login boxes are near the top of the page.

  5. once you're logged in, look on the left hand side for "Add" (under "Hosts / Redirects"). Click it.

  6. in the "hostname" field, type whatever hostname you would like. in the dropdown box below that, pick the domain you'd like from the "No-IP Free Domains" list. your URL will consist of your hostname followed by the domain name you pick (i.e. evan.no-ip.org)

  7. don't change anything else on this page. click "Create Host" at the bottom of the page.

  8. if everything worked okay, you should see a message telling you that your host has been successfully added to their system.

  9. download the windows update client at http://e00.us/radio_new/resources/download/broadcast/ducsetup.exe

  10. run it. click next until you get to the following screen:

  11. click Finish.

  12. you should see this:

enter the email address and password you registered with earlier and click OK.

  13. after you click OK, double-click on the "IP" icon (with a "no" sign over it) in your taskbar (next to the clock). you should see a screen that lists your hosts. the one you created earlier should be listed here. make sure the box next to your host is checked.

  14. click "options" and then check "Run as a system service"

  15. click OK

  16. click the red "X" in the top right corner of the "No-IP DUC" window.

NOW: to test everything out:

bring up the command prompt.
start > run
type "cmd.exe" into the box and click OK
in the big black box that comes up, type "ping yourhostname.yourdomain.com" (without the quotes, of course) (make sure to replace yourhostname and yourdomain.com with the hostname and domain you picked earlier, i.e. evan.no-ip.org)

you should see a bunch of stuff, followed by 4 lines that begin with "Reply from"

if this is the case - great success! you're done. you can close the command prompt. you won't ever have to mess with this again. it will run in the background on your computer (and will start up automatically when you reboot) and update your hostname with your ip address.

after you've done all this, PM me the hostname you chose.

more instructions are forthcoming. you're finished with the hardest part now, though.

no

having a dynamic IP is the whole problem, it changes every now and then

the dynamic DNS stuff keeps track of your IP

SO HERE'S MY PROBLEM

If my show is scheduled from, say, 11-12, and the actual length of my playlist is 60:45, will I be cut off at exactly 12, thus losing my final :45 in the ether?

And what if my playlist is only 57:50? Will there be 2:10 of dead air before the next show takes over?

It just seems like transitions could be a little sloppy if it's all automated. Of course, I don't have any alternatives to suggest and I'm not sure I'd be interested in any if they required more work. But I think dead air/chopped shows could be an issue.

yes. it will connect to your DNAS exactly at 11 and drop the stream exactly at 12.

i'll set up an NTP server on the streaming computer so if you wish to synchronize your computer's time to the streaming server's time (which is synced with the atomic clock), you can.

Quote :
"And what if my playlist is only 57:50? Will there be 2:10 of dead air before the next show takes over?"

no. there will never be dead air if i can help it.

if your show ends before your time, just stop the encoder. the way i'm going to have everyone set up the stuff, it will kick the main streaming server if you are no longer streaming anything. once the main streaming server sees that it's been kicked, it immediately crossfades into autopilot mode.

so, basically, the only time there would ever be dead air is if:

a) someone decides to stop playing music but keeps the encoder on so the main streaming server doesn't drop the stream (if this happens twice, your show is cancelled.)

b) the main streaming server crashes for some strange reason.

try to make your shows fit within your timeblock as best as you can. my suggestion would be to start playing music 2-3 minutes before your scheduled start time, so when the main streaming server connects, it's not connecting to dead air. i'll leave that up to you, though.

also, unless you can time it right, you might want to end your show 30 seconds or so early so it doesn't cut you off mid-sentence.

regardless of what you're doing, the streaming server WILL connect to your computer at your scheduled start time and WILL disconnect at your scheduled end time.

also:

i'd really really really really really really really really prefer it if your show was more than just a playlist in winamp. that's going to get boring.

part of what is going to make this awesome is the fact that tdub users are the DJs - if all you're doing is hitting play on a playlist, you're not DJing.

SAM will let you do voiceovers and sound effects and (if you really want to do this, PM me) even phone calls.

treat it like an actual show. play 4-5 songs, then come on and talk a little bit, do whatever, and play some more music.

ALSO:
if you don't use SAM, you won't be able to take requests for your show.

this is how the request system will work for scheduled programs:

each show will have it's own page on the twwradio website. you'll be able to edit the page contents, etc.

it will display a list of every song in your SAM library and will also be searchable. it'll function just like the current request system. a user goes to your show's page, finds a song in your library, and clicks the request button. they'll get a success/failure message.

when the user clicks the request button, it sends a message to SAM running on your computer with the song ID of the request, and puts it into a special "Requests" queue. you'll see requests as soon as they are made, in the order they are made, in this queue.

to play a request, you'll just drag the song out of the requests queue and place it in the broadcast queue wherever you want it to play.

if i can get it working, i'll also have it send along the tww username of the person who requested the song and whatever they put in the "dedicated to" field so you can do dedications and whatnot.

ALSO ALSO:

if there's enough interest, i'd be willing to reserve the big conference room in the east wing of the library (the one with the projector in it) to have a tutorial on how to use all this stuff.

we'll go over setting everything up, basic operation of SAM, etc.

"the software used will include:

1) a custom (i.e. i changed a bunch of stuff) version of the IceCast DNAS
2) SAM Broadcaster 4.2.2
3) a dynamic DNS client of your choosing.

SAM is the easiest and most user friendly way of doing it - i use DRS2006 for the main stream, but it's got a pretty steep learning curve.

if you don't want to use SAM, you also have the option of downloading WinAmp and the SHOUTcast DSP plugin and just streaming a winamp playlist for your show... although this is pretty boring. i'd rather everyone use SAM so we can hear your voice and you can do fun things on the air.

if you know what you're doing when it comes to radio automation/internet broadcasting, you may use whatever software you want as long as it can stream to the DNAS on your machine.
