i just simply can't understand why nc state students/grads would EVER root for dook over nc state. makes no sense whatsoever, and i just can't fathom how one could spend 4 years at state yet pull for a rival school's athletic program. maybe if you're a girl, and don't really follow sports and your dad or boyfriend pulls for dook/unc, maybe then - but not if you're a guy. i mean, i grew up a HUGE carolina fan - both parents worked at unc, two sisters went there, grew up in chapel hill, went to dean smith's basketball camp for Christ's sake - but after about one semester at state i was like "fuck carolina. i'm at state, these are my people, this is the university that's preparing me for a successful career, and this is where my allegiance is..."

I'll admit I grew up a huge duke fan and still follow them and watch as many of their games as I do State's. However, whenever we go up against them I cheer for state. The school you attended always takes first no matter how bad they may suck lol. Ive already given up on this season for State as far as making the tourney though so its not bad to have a good solid backup to cheer for the rest of the way.

That's the thing with Duke fans. MOST of them (and yes, I'm generalizing -- so this doesn't apply to ALL of you) have literally zero connection to the school. I gaurantee that 2/3's of the people on here never attended the school and have no family members who ever attended the school.

I get kids who were UNC fans as kids who still don't hate to see them lose (I'm not going to say pull for them, because it's retarded to go to State and pull for a Big 4 team IMO -- but you don't have to HATE teams) because so many people in this state have family members who went to one of the huge public schools... The "Walmart" fans can go to hell but as a % of fanbase I bet that Duke has more of those types that have no family affilliation than any other school in the ACC.

Shit, I pull for another team as well (though they've played State 3 times in 25 years -- not exactly rivals) but that's because 80% of my family went to school there...

I've been a Duke fan since before I can remember. I attended and graduated from State. While I was at State, I would pull for State, mainly because the players for State you would see around campus and sort of got to know, because you see them everywhere and then feel a connection with them.

Now, 2 years removed from State (having maintained some focus on Duke the whole time), there are players on State that I can't even name, and had never seen around campus. Therefore, I feel no connection with them (aside from going to State as a student). Comapred to while I was there, I just do not care as much anymore about their success, but of course I'll root for them in any other circumstances.


All that said, what is wrong with us Duke fans having a thread...you don't have to click it (God forbid you just see the words on your screen in the thread list)...
