^That's kinda how I feel. While I don't agree with people, if they feel strongly about it then fine, at least they stand for something and they aren't one of those people that are apathetic about everything. Besides, this is abortion, both sides have equally valid points.

So I'm moving back to Raleigh in July (likely getting a place downtown near State -- maybe Cameron Village?).

No one I will be living with will be a State student/faculty/staff so I will have NO access to the NC State gym.

I need some suggestions for a gym. The only requirement that I have is that it NEEDS to have basketball courts where I can find a full court pickup game weeknights. Does anyone have any suggestions?

So far, it looks the Gold's at North Hill might but if there are more closer, that'd be awesome...

(Oh, and I don't need a gym buddy But I'll play basketball when I move anytime with anyone on here...)

doesn't the YMCA have full pick up games? or would their weekends be overcroweded with little kid basketball? i know my brother plays bball at the Y a lot. and there's one on hillsb. street.

oh oops you said weeknights, in which case, i think they definitely do

Yeah, I might check out the YMCA. I'm sure you can get a guest pass.

I definitely want to play against at lest medium-high level competition. I can't get in to playing a bunch of high school kids who think they are God's gift... too frustrating for someone with my personality..

Does it have a full gym too? Bball is just a hobby, but I need to work out too!

[Edited on February 9, 2009 at 9:06 PM. Reason : I've never used a YMCA before]

i think so. i haven't been to the hillsb. st. Y since it got renovated like last year. it looks really nice on the outside.

the YMCA in n. raleigh that my brother played at had like extreme level bball players (like carlos boozer and his brother) and a bunch of good people. i don't know how the one on hillsborough would be. but they have a full gym (or should, i think most Ys do). the people at the Y in greensboro that play also seem to be at least medium-level players (the track goes around the court so i always see them playing). i think you just have to find the time where it is like adult pick up

get fucking serious. a gym is a place where men lift free weights. a fitness center is where "people" work out and stretch and waste 40 dollars on some nautilus machine that will destroy your tendons

well luckily most ymca's also have a full weight room! complete with free weights! what is a nautilus machine? is that like one of those TV machines? how does using weight room machines (like a lat pulldown) hurt your tendons? i mean if you are an idiot and don't use equipment properly, yea. but don't be an idiot. problem solved.

p.s. what is wrong with stretching

I asked for a reason.

I had briefly looked into it, mentioned it to a friend, and she was like 'Oh, girl. No. I went with mom because we had a pass, and it's all in a circle and it's social and shit and you WOULD NOT like it!'

That + the places where I usually see them (itty bitty store fronts in ghetto strip malls) was enough.

I don't know if that's a factual representation or not, but what I read while googling the anti choice bit was enough to make me realize I really don't need to know anything more about that circlejerk.

because you cannot work through a full range of natural motion. there is no action you will ever perform with your muscles that will give them constant tension through the entire range. and when you start from a static position on a cable or tension added machine, you have to either use weight that is too light, or use some sort of improper form to get the weight moving. instead of a lat pulldown, why don't you do a pull up? you probably cannot do one, but besides that, they will give you a much more difficult and deeper contraction into your lats, rhomboids, traps, biceps, brachi, teres (major/minor)

i'm sorry, do you want to talk about exercise science?

what about lifting a large boulder up and down using a rope?

okay, if the boulder was suspended above your head, it would take a much larger contraction from your biceps than you could possibly produce; meaning you would have to squat the weight while holding the rope or jump up and let your momentum carry you down.

if you could pull the boulder down, once the weight passed your chest you would be performing a lower lat pressdown, the bottom of which would require you to either remove all tension from the boulder or rest said boulder. either way, it is impossible to keep constant tension on all your muscles at the same time.

but isn't that why people work out different groups of muscles?

why do athletes still use machines to train? why do machines even exist? i'm confused.

dont stress too much, idiots on here dont know shit about exercising these guys do the same work out everyday for years and years

curves is good, and the support you get in such an environment is invaluable, youre only wastin your money if you sit there and start feelin a little tired so you stop and quit, generally unaccountable for the progress you are supposed to be making

the group can tell you to pick it up, or chill out

whatever works for you man...go for it or woman, whatevs. i just laughed at ambrosia's description haha, i don't know anything about the actual place. my school has a ymca membership included in tuition so i go there. and i prefer to swim rather than run so really i just like places with pools.

Does a pull up not give muscles constant tension through the entire range or does gravity let up as you go higher?

Do you not start a pull up from a static position? Do you then have to use weight that is too light or some sort of improper form?

I'll address each point:

a pullup does not give constant tension. you have to bend your arms first, lifting your entire body weight with your biceps for a small time. as your arms bend, the stress on your back changes at different angles. with a "lat pulldown", no matter where you are in the lift, the tension on the pulley and bar will be the exact same weight by design.

you mean you don't start your pullups in the "up" position? you count the first one where you probably jump up to the bar? no, you do not start static for when you are hanging, you arrange your body to either do behind the neck or to the clavicle pull ups.
