I noticed that most stations run out of premium before regular gas. Is that because more cars now are requiring premium rather than regular gas?

no, it's because they order much less premium and mid-grade than they do regular

since people are freaking out and filling up whenever they see a station with gas (whether they need it or not), the supply that normally sustains the stations can't keep up with demand.

I think of 79 cents as cheap. that's what I filled up with my senior year in high school/freshman year in college.

Thanks for this tip!

I ventured out this morning since it's 5 mins from me and got gas there for $2.98 a gallon or 2.89 with a car wash but fuck a car wash.

Bunkies is now at 2.98 a gallon.

In Oklahoma city, its going for 2.30 a gallon.

I do think we will get under 3.00 a gallon, however, with the rest of the world starting to take care of the financial crisis, oil and gas is probably going to rebound a bit. However, unless the rebound is really significant, we probably wont see that rebound affect us getting under 3 a gallon.

Waiting to see if we get another big gain on Wednesday's inventory report. One more big build in a row will seriously temper any rebound we might get.

We're really getting gouged here in North Carolina. I heard that wholesale gas is trading around $1.80, so where is the relief for us? Driving from Boone to Raleigh yesterday I observed a wide range of prices...from $3.79 in Boone to $3.09 somewhere off of 40 near Greensboro. Kudos to the guy in Cary selling gas for $2.98 while the 99% of the other stations roll in their filthy greed. Hopefully he sets off a chain of competition which will force other stations to follow suit.

Where are our politicians during this time of greed? Oh wait...

^ i thought there was a law in effect regarding price gouging? or was that only temporary, for those couple of days last month (or was it august)?

^ It seems that they enact the gouging law only after a natual disaster occurs (i.e. a Gulf Coast hurricane). I think it prevents stations from marking up gasoline more than 60 cents/gal above the wholesale price. It's been over a month since Ike and considering the huge markups on gas I'm sure the law has since been repealed.

I generally do not like any of the articles on energy by the local news agencies (they dont know shit), however WRAL had a piece last week that stated many of the local gas stations they are talking to are trying to lower prices, but they cant do but so quicky. In other words, if they lowered it to the price it should be (around 2.75-2.90), then everyone would flock to the gas station, and they'd be out of gas in no time. They are having to lower prices incrementally with their neighbors.

It seems that in Cary, the two big stations near Prestonwood (Bunky's and the Shell station on high house and cary parkway) are ignoring that, and giving the price for about as low as they can go right now.

Yea and when they are selling gas where it should be (dicatated by competition) they aren't making much off the gas sales and rely on the in store purchases of marked up convenience items.

There is also a good story on digtriad about how gas is being bought at the gboro tank farm and shipped up to VA and sold for less:
http://www.digtriad.com/news/local_state/article.aspx?storyid=112166

On top of that you have crazy ass-people that will wait in line for 30 minutes to pay 10 cents less than it is across the street, which I see every morning on the way to work.

they should be shot. literally.

I'm guessing the high-house road guy has found difficulty getting enough gas so he has normalized his price in line with his competitors to $3.23. While prices are consistently falling everywhere, the price differential with our neighbors remains about the same.

I'm glad to see the prices have come down, as I've been out of the state for a few days. The lowest I've seen so far was $3.09 at the Flying J truck stop near Mebane/Burlington; unfortunately I had a nearly full tank at that point and couldn't really take advantage.

Has the situation with premium being so hard to find improved in the past day or two? When I filled up last wednesday, I had to go to 11 stations to find premium. Eleven. Fucking. Stations. That's just out of hand...

^ my family lives there...they had mentioned that to me and i was supremely jealous

but they've almost always been ~$0.40 cheaper than NC, so i'm used to it (though that's more than $dollar buck difference!)

i'm glad the gas prices are falling because it's cheaper to fill up, but you people do realize that it is a symptom of the economy going to shit right?

if you're talking about the stations that offer a lower price if you use cash, I have always gotten the "cash" price with a debit card, just not with the credit card. Does that not work for work for you?

i dont have a pin with the company credit card..so i have to run it as credit. i haven't tried debit but i would suspect you are correct since they pay little to no fees for debit cards compared to credit

Yeah, they get charged ridiculous fees when credit cards are used. Those credit card companies get money from every direction they can it seems.

I think they should charge more for credit. But they usually don't, so I am bad and always pay with my credit card.

i use credit at unfamiliar places for safety's sake - if my card number is (somehow) stolen, i want it to be credit instead of debit

that said, businesses do pay pretty heavily for credit transactions (whereas the banks pay the transaction fees for debit), so i understand the difference in price

^ is that the one w/ the car wash, that always closes really early, and doesn't even sell snacks or drinks? I used to hate that place when I was out there all the time.
