do you not have any idea how a credit card works? if you don't carry a balance (responsibly pay your bill every month) then the interest rate of a credit card is irrelevant. i have no idea what my interest rates are on my card, and i don't really care.

yeah, same here. I know my USAA card is fairly low and my Chase card is fairly high (but with better rewards), but I couldn't tell you what the percentages are, and don't care at all.

plus, american express not only gives me a ton of money and other incentives for using their credit card (gifts, discounts, cash back), they also look out for their customers to keep us happy. if there's any problem whatsoever, they immediately credit my money back to my card and deal with the merchant so i dont have to.

ive never heard of that happening with a debit card.

Same here, Discover keeps offering me discounts on hotels and cash back. They once called me the evening after I bought a computer at the Apple store just to make sure it was me who bought it. Not all companies are bad, some look after their card holders.

So I grabbed the summons from my dad's house today and it's just so I file a response at the county courthouse.

And...I found a job! Hooray!

this is a sidenote

but i never understood why they kicked people out for attempting suicide. that just seems like it would make things worse??

or is it just like a suspension type thing?

^ The logic is that you are not focused on your school work if you are thinking about or attempting to off yourself.

It's probationary. Contingent upon a positive psychiatric evaluation, I can return to school, albeit without financial aid.

There you go. Getting a job, along with taking responsibility for the mess you created and starting to work towards resolving it, is a huge step in the right direction. Now just keep pressing and don't fuck it up. You may or may not have a setback or two, but it shouldn't be overly difficult from here.

Shoulda added this to my topics. I didn't realize this thread had continued.

Quote :
"combined with the typical insults such as; "you are a moron", "you should have known better", "your parents didn't raise you right","

FYI, 'your parents didn't raise you right' isn't an insult

Quote :
"Ambrosia's responses in this thread really annoy me."

You know, I'm used to this.
Quote :
"Somebody asked why he is asking for advice now instead of earlier, but with the responses in this thread it should be no surprise that someone may be too embarrassed to seek guidance or advice for this problem."

Funny. The very reason that I'm so outspoken on this matter is because I've gotten a fair number of PMs along the lines of "Hey, from your posts, it seems like you might can help me on this. I don't wanna make a thread asking for help." And then I do what I can, and point people in the right direction towards further resources. And I fucking love doing it - it's something where my existing knowledge base and a little bit of time on my end leads to massive benefits for them.
In this case, I am incredibly frustrated because someone has waited until the last possible minute to ask for any help. You do not wait until the friday of dead week to ask for help in a class. Why do it with things like your credit history?
I am not trying to come across as a know-it-all. I promise.

Quote :
"but lets not forget the shady tactics many credit card companies use to target kids who really have no reason to have a credit card."

Hence why one must only count on themselves to protect one's self. And why, should one make an error at some point, one must immediately begin taking steps to mitigate that error.

Which, amusingly, few people seem to bother with
Again, frustration.

Quote :
"ut you haven't been around long enough to know that she knows it all and enjoys making everyone blatantly aware of it"

Join the club. You're apparently my big brother in the League of Know-It-Alls. Where do I get my membership card?

Quote :
"Which is why I can't stand all these people talking shit to him. He has made some bad mistakes, and now he has to pay for those mistakes one way or another."

Everyone makes mistakes. That's cool.
What's not cool is electing to ignore them or put them off.

Quote :
"then why have a credit card if you can pay with cash that day?"

For young people, mostly to establish credit.
Also, credit cards offer additional protections (namely, 2, 6 and 7) not just over cash, but debit.

Quote :
"but now debt collectors buy old debt and make it current again...you can no longer wait a few years for it to go away, because it won't.

even if you have to give them 10/month it is better than nothing, and shows you are serious about paying back your debts"

What you've referred to is called re-aging, and debt collectors cannot re-age a debt. Only the debtor can, by doing precisely what you've said: entering an agreement to pay, even verbally, or making payments. That's considered an admission by you that it's still a valid debt, even if it was expired. That's what 'zombie debt collectors' try to get you to do. They buy expired debts, and then pester debtors to pay anything. These are bought for pennies on the dollar, if that much, so any cash they can squeeze out of uninformed debtors is gravy.

In NC, CC debt is alive and valid for three years. Payments on the debt reset this clock. Agreements to make payments also restart the three years.

Quote :
"I haven't checked in to just how much protection a debit card offers, maybe it's identical to a CC"

Protection of credit vs debit varies by the scenario. There's a quick and dirty summary of this in the first link I posted - #2.

Quote :
"Whether they admit it or not, they will give you a LOT more shit if your debit card is used as a debit card (as in with the PIN) ..now, that isn't common and would require some sort of skimming + camera to figure out your PIN usually but my point being is I've known people that the banks flat out refused to give them their money back even though it wasn't them that withdrew all of their money. They didn't have the money to get laywers involves and even though they only lost $500-1000 it's still more money then I'd ever like to lose."

And it's actually becoming a lot more common.
How long ago was this that this happened to the folks you know?

Quote :
"At this stage in your life, though, and over a relatively measley $1500, the pain won't be that bad. If he unfucks himself, it can be just a minor bump in the road when he looks back in a few years."

Pretty much.
I'm actually surprised that he's being taken to court over $1500, but times are tough for the CC companies Reap what you sow, assholes.

Quote :
"And those in this thread that are talking about how perfect they are with credit are by far the minority, especially in the 18-21 demographic."

I think jbrick, joe#s, and theduke are the only ones who've said they're well-disciplined and haven't had CC trouble...close enough to 'perfect' for me.
Go ahead, ask me how I know what I know in the matter of personal finance. I'll be the last one to try to claim I'm perfect.
It sounds to me that you haven't liked what I had to say, and have decided I'm a bad person for going 'WTF HOW DID YOU LET THIS GET THIS BAD YOU HAVE TO CHANGE NOW'. Okay...?

Quote :
"it's just so I file a response at the county courthouse.

And...I found a job! Hooray!"

Congratulations.
Also, make a budget

What's sad about this whole thing is that I took a personal finance class at State and used to have a 780 FICO score. I went all in on a bad bet, with absolutely no safety net.

I've never had CC trouble...I have done some not-super-responsible things in the past with credit (nothing terrible, but I've done things in my early 20s that weren't financially "well disciplined".)

i dont know a lot about civil stuff. and besides specific statutes, motions, appeals, crap like that, i really don't know much about criminal.

plus i only like to give advice on stuff i specifically know to be true

which reminds me - if your financial aid is denied because ncsu denied you opportunity to remain as a full-time student, then they have the power to fix that in-house. don't let them tell you otherwise.

ps - ambrosia you're a bitch. jesus
