^^^ The sad thing is you will come back to find that State still hasn't won so much as an ACC Championship in football or men's basketball.
V Hope you're right. As a State fan I try not to ever look at the glass as half full because as soon as I do, somebody comes and knocks it over.

Ok guys, seriously how good can we be in 2009? Is FSU our main competition for the Atlantic next year or are there other teams that will be right in the hunt? 2/10/2009 8:26:11 PM |

^With the talent clemson has been pulling in, they'll always be in the hunt. Depends on how Korn does at QB though.
Wake Forest will be solid, although they lose quite a bit off their defense.
Maryland........im not real sure about them, to be honest.
Boston College will have a down year. They lose those cogs on the defensive front.
Florida State should be really solid. Will be interesting to see if Ponder can continue to improve.
Then there is us. First team ACC QB coming back, most key pieces of defense coming back. Didn't really lose much.
I'd say we should battle FSU for the division, but crazy shit happens every year. who knows 2/10/2009 8:32:33 PM |

My "way too bold" predictions
Sept. 3 South Carolina - W Sept. 12 Murray State - W Sept. 19 Gardner-Webb - W Sept. 26 Pittsburgh - W Oct. 3 at Wake Forest - W Oct. 10 Duke - W Oct. 17 at Boston College - W Oct. 31 at Florida State - L Nov. 7 Maryland - W Nov. 14 Clemson - W Nov. 21 at Virginia Tech - L Nov. 28 North Carolina - W (good to see this is the last game on the schedule)
10-2 (6-2) with us either winning the Atlantic or tieing with FSU, in which case FSU would go to the championship game. I think VT wins the Coastal again. We lose to them again if we were to play them. We go 10-3 as a result and get shafted for an at-large BCS bid by a 9-3 tOSU team. 2/12/2009 11:45:18 AM |

There was a quote by Mel Kiper in the N&O today about Willie Young being a 1st or 2nd round pick had he come out this year.
When's the last time we had a 1st or 2nd round pick stay for another year? Maybe Rivers?
Anyway, its great that TOB can get these guys to hang around. 2/12/2009 12:02:56 PM |

Staying healthy is key. The other thing the players would have to deal with is handling the hype and praise, b/c we haven't been there since 2002. None of these players have really experienced a great deal of success. I think if anyone can keep them grounded then it's TOB. Don't read the newspaper clippings until you've actually done something, and by that I mean winning a championship (division, conference, bowl, national, etc.). 2/12/2009 1:42:02 PM |

If everyone stays healthy, and the offense picks up where it left off, there's really not a game we shouldn't win. I'm not dumb enough to think we'll win them all, though.
Aside from Wilson, the defensive stars have to stay healthy (Irving, Johnson, and Morgan especially). If we lose one of them, our d could be back to the shit tank 2/12/2009 9:34:12 PM |

didn't know what thread to post this in, but it looks like Carolina is having a rough offseason as far as staff turnover goes, they just lost their 3rd assistant in the past week:

Hagen's departure for an assistant coaching position in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns makes him the third coach to leave the staff of UNC coach Butch Davis this offseason. Earlier today, it was confirmed that linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen was leaving UNC to coach the secondary at Auburn. " |

Tuesday Top Five: football games to watch
Basketball season isn’t even over yet, and spring practice is still a month away, but the ACC schedule came out last week, which means it isn’t too early to start talking about football.
Despite the overflow of games against I-AA — sorry, FCS — opponents (Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State will both play two each, Wake Forest one) there are still plenty of intriguing games on next season’s schedule — Tuesday’s Top Five:
5. Boston College at Notre Dame, Oct. 24 — The Eagles had an offseason of unexpected coaching turmoil, while the Irish expected coaching turmoil but had none. This battle of Catholic football powers always means something.
4. Clemson at Georgia Tech, Sept. 10 — Two questions will be answered, in part, in this one: Can Clemson bounce back from a miserable season? And will Georgia Tech’s option offense work a second time through the ACC?
3. Miami at Florida State, Sept. 7 — For the third time in four years, Florida State and Miami will open the season against each other on Labor Day. Both programs may be a shadow of their former selves, but they’ll both be undefeated for this one.
2. North Carolina at N.C. State, Nov. 28 — Two programs on the upswing close out the season against each other after last fall’s Wolfpack win in Chapel Hill. If both teams are improved, there could be a lot on the line.
1. Virginia Tech vs. Alabama in Atlanta, Sept. 5 — Division favorite Clemson was exposed by the Crimson Tide to open last season, and the ACC spent the rest of the year repairing its reputation. The Hokies have a chance to salvage some ACC pride.
Another game catch your eye? Post your choices as a comment below. 2/17/2009 8:47:37 AM |

I was very happy when I heard about these departures. Thigpen is a bad ass recruiter. Also when a coach leaves his alumni to take a parallel position at another school, that is a bad omen.
Seriously could you imagine if someone like Monty Towe just up and left Lowe's staff for an assistant coaching position at rebuilding program in another conference. How bad would that look on Sidney? It is not like Thigpen left for a higher profile position. Maybe more money, but still BMFD = CTC part 2
