1. you're supposed to burn the flag. in certain situations.
2. so why do MD and Duke say "O"? The Orioles makes sense..
3. It seems like a few years back, they waited til after the "brave" to say "WOLFPACK"...now it seems like wolfpack has just taken its place. This one seems a little worse, I think it's fine, but I can understand other people being mad. Screaming WOLFPACK right after it ends shouldn't make anybody mad though. 12/23/2008 10:20:51 PM |

You should probably drop the whole Saudi Arabia analogy, it's not really a 1:1 comparison. If you are a visitor to their country I'd expect it would be in your best interest to follow their customs and laws. I guess in my mind it's worse to be a visitor somewhere and be disrespectful of the place you are visiting than it is to be disrespectful of something you're associated with. One scenario you've gone out of your way to be a giant douche. The other you've just been medium sized douche.
Yeah, no one is forcing... just guilting and berating ad nauseum until someone changes their mind?
Oh, and...

^ sure it is... my point was that even if I didnt think I had to be quiet for it I would be quiet out of the respect for people who did want that... as I said with the moment of silence for someone that died, even if I didnt know them at all, no clue who they were, zero connection at all, I would still be quiet for the people that did know them, I wouldnt be like "fuck this! dont try to guilt me into being silent, I am going to yell just to spite you and your damn request for silence raaaaawr!"

I just dont see the big deal of shutting up for a little over a minute. Even if I don't agree with someone if all the asked of me was to be quiet for one minute in an entire day I think I could handle that without feeling like I was being oppressed.
and I have a feeling most of the people on here are just for it because its a State tradition. If State never did it and someone like say.... UNC did it, they would all be against it

Honestly, it's not my favorite thing in the world but I just stand there at the position of attention and face the flag. I'm certainly not offended.

^^That's pretty much how i feel. I don't find it as much disrespectful as i do irritating. The American public as a whole generally has little respect for anything these days except for individual needs/wants...so i don't let myself get butthurt over stuff like this anymore.
But seriously..."REDDDDDD" and "Home of the WOLFPACCCCCK?" Can we get any more unoriginal? Does this really get your pride for NC State flowing?? I doubt it. So how bout just shut up and listen or sing the actual words to the Anthem. 12/24/2008 12:06:37 AM |

no, actually I don't... for the 7th time, NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT FORCING PEOPLE TO NOT DO IT, so no one's free speech is being affected whatsoever. Do you understand what free speech means? It means the govt does not force someone to say or not say certain things; it has nothing to do with common courtesy and respect you stupid fuck.
I think people should say "thank you" if someone else holds a door open for them; that doesn't mean that I think you should go to fucking jail if you don't do it, it just means you SHOULD do it.

I know that I have enough school spirit that I can let a minute and a half pass without losing my identity, but I guess you are afraid that time will make you forget who you are cheering for... I am sorry that ruins your little world to be quiet for a minute and a half if only to be respectful of other people. Do you blabber on during the pregame prayer if you are at a school that does that? Look at me! I am SOOOO atheist! woo hoo!

um no, nothing at all to do with 9/11. I went to dozens and dozens of college games long before 9/11. Yeah, so you are different so you don't have to listen to the anthem, sing it or anything, but is it really that hard to stay quiet for the people that do respect it? Once again, the Muslim example... I am not Muslim at all, but if I was around a Muslim person and they asked me to just be quiet for a minute I think i could handle that just out of respect for something that they feel is important even though I am "different" from them.

It's funny because some people just don't get it. It reminds me of a South Park episode (from which I learn an alarming amount of stuff) where black people are called niggers. To whites, it's just a stupid word, but to many blacks, it means so much more. It's a symbol of a really tough time that has been overcome. The same can be said with regards to the National Anthem. To most of us, it's just a stupid song that get's sung prior to sporting events. But to the people who were pulled from their lives and almost died or who had close friends who died, well it means a lot more.
I have been in the military for over 11 years now. That's nothing at all compared to the sacrifice that many Americans made for their country. And if those people have a request as small... as absolutely miniscule as respecting our National Anthem, then I have no problem at all doing it.
It's not taking away from my free speech. It just isn't, and anyone who argues to the contrary is being nothing but a whiny little spoiled bitch. I am free to run into a church service on Sunday morning and flip the pastor off, say his wife is a whore, and leave. I am also free to go into a nursing home wearing nothing but a thong and hit on the elderly. But I don't do these things, for one because it's stupid, and secondly because I have respect for people. It's just that simple. For once it would be nice if people would think about more than just themselves and forget about trying to come up with creative ways as to how their rights are being violated. But once again, the people in question are little more than children out of high school, and they really don't know any better. Someday they will, but not now. 12/25/2008 12:27:52 AM |

well, 1. the difference is you cant control the singer, you can control yourself unless you have Tourettes, and 2. as I have mentioned before there are plenty of things that go on at a game that have nothing to do with the game itself and you still have expectations for them... "they just spit in my coke, but I cant complain because I just came here for the game", "there are not bathrooms, but I just came here for the game so I cant be pissed there are no bathrooms" 12/25/2008 10:34:23 AM |

and you can't control the actions of other people. Sooooo quit whining. I am not asking you to do anything during the anthem and I expect the same courtesy. For the sake of argument, I find your slavs&polacks reference disrespectful. Would I A. Start a thread on TWW whining about it or B. Just be a man and ignore it. I know you aren't the OP but you sure have continued long after he gave up. Your definition of respectful and my definition of respectful are fundamentally different. I could argue you should be more respectful of the institution that and the traditions established at the institution long before you arrived there. But I don't really care if you do it or not. I will support the country and alma mater in the way I see fit and I suggest you do the same. /thread 12/25/2008 11:35:17 AM |

how is Slavs and Polacks/Pole disrespectful? thats what people from those/that particular areas/country are called. It would be like calling someone from Dublin "Irish". And by pure logic the Anthem had to be around before people started yelling out a certain word during that same anthem. And that's not even an issue as its not "if you are quiet during it you are against NC State!", you can easily be respectful and still support your school, its really not that hard. I think "being a man" would be to "sacrifice" one minute of your precious time to be respectful and not because you are forced to do it.
