also, a little water from melted ice isn't necessarily a bad thing
mixing water can unlock some of whiskey's more intricate flavors. I drink whiskey straight, with a little water mixed in or on the rocks depending on my mood. 6/26/2009 2:32:06 AM |

I'm in the market for a good "special occasion" bottle of single-malt scotch, with the following criteria:
1) single-malt scotch (no blends or non-Scottish whiskeys) 2) price range of $50-$150 for a 750ml bottle (anything less is cheap enough to be an everyday drink, anything more is out of my price range right now, even for special occasions) 3) preferred tastes are smooth, moderately sweet, not too peaty (so probably no Islays) 4) I'm not a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, so I don't have access to their bottlings
Here's a link to the whisky list at a bar I could haunt to test drive candidate bottles; anyone have suggestions on which scotches I should try that would meet the above criteria?
http://thedailypint.net/uisge-beatha/single-malt-scotch/
Right now, a few notable ones I've already tried are Highland Park 25 Year, The Macallan Cask Strength and The Macallan 25 Year. I also had Johnny Walker Blue just to compare a nice blended. I'm thinking that the next ones I want to try are The Macallan 18 Year (since the 25 Year is way too expensive for me to buy a bottle), Springbank 15 Year, Lagavulin 16 Year, and Auchentoshan 18 Year. What else should I definitely try? 7/1/2009 3:49:47 AM |

I know you said "Scottish Only!" but that description is nearly dead on for an Irish whiskey 7/1/2009 11:12:41 AM |

Jamesons' is one of my everyday drinks, depending on what's on sale when I need a new bottle. But for a special occasion, I'm partly going just with scotch because this bar nearby has such a great list of them to taste-test before buying. But the other part is probably me being a snob.
Just saw your other posts on this page, too--Bushmills is also good, but they don't have it at the Trader Joe's I normally shop at, so it doesn't usually make it into the rotation.

Had the Macallan 18 Year and the Springbank 15 on Friday night, and I think I might have a winner. The Macallan 18 is made of yum. Really smooth, good stuff. 7/5/2009 4:08:41 PM |

I heart whiskey, thanks to my big brother. Too bad every time I'm in a bar around here and say "Whiskey please", the bartender always always replies "You mean bourbon?" It gets a little frustrating... 8/28/2009 8:54:49 PM |
