Well, it's not like it would be the first time. We franchised Muhammad a few years back. If you do that though you are basically accepting the fact that you've got the player for one more year and then he is gone, because franchising someone pretty much blows up any negotiations.

I didn't want to make a thread for this but I just heard on Mike and Mike that Roy Williams is on the cover of the Detroit Lions 2009 calendar. Quite a fuckup by the marketing department.

Well guess what I wasn't talking about Peppers at all. I was referring to the discussion on the last page about Gross.

Well guess what Gross ain't goin anywhere...

we will give Gross a good contract this year and i think we'll end up releasing Ken Lucas in the long run to free up cap space.

Reading comprehension. No where have I suggested that we franchise Jordan Gross. It's blatantly obvious to everyone that Julius Peppers will be the one tagged.

My post was a response to this one:

Quote :
"
Just so you know, franchise tag is better used on someone who doesn't want to be there, but still has trade value.

If the guy wants to be here, and we want him here, why franchise him when we can sign him to a multi-year contract?"

I was simply explaining that there is a historical precedent, on this team even, for a player being franchised even if the players wants to be there and the team wants him there. I'm not sure why that was so hard to understand. Probably because most of the users on here are more interested in finding a way to prove someone wrong on something than having a discussion.

the only way we use the tag on Gross is if it looks like Pep is gone and Gross wants too much money...if long term contracts are out of the question for both of them but we can franchise one of them, AND if through our talks with other teams we find out a team will be willing to give us more/better picks for Gross than Peppers, then and only then would we franchise Gross

"Carolina Panthers: Is it time to plan for life after Delhomme?

If you watched Carolina's 33-13 divisional-round playoff loss to the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals, your last abiding memory of Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme is the dinosaur egg he laid on the turf of Bank of America Stadium. Delhomme completed 17 of 34 passes, took two sacks and threw an astonishing five interceptions to end Carolina's season. According to Football Outsiders' advanced metrics, he played the second-worst game by a quarterback in the past 14 postseasons (only Kerry Collins' losing effort for the New York Giants against the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV was worse). Fans and pundits were understandably apoplectic, but were the voices calling for Delhomme's head wailing in error?

Jake Delhomme: Final six regular-season games
Week Opponent DVOA VOA DYAR Weekly QB rank
12 Atlanta 36.9% 35.7% 110 8
13 Green Bay 39.3% 27.4% 84 8
14 Tampa Bay 6.7% -5.3% 35 14
15 Denver 33.2% 60.3% 74 11
16 NY Giants 60.9% 57.3% 95 7
17 New Orlns 80.2% 84.6% 131 3

DVOA: value per play, adjusted for opp.
VOA: value per play, not adjusted
DYAR: total value over replacement-level QB

According to his per-game DVOA in 2008, there is still some life in the old dog. Through the 2008 season, Delhomme finished with negative DVOA in five of 16 games. Two of those games were in Weeks 2 and 3, when Delhomme was still shaking the rust off after missing most of 2007 with an elbow injury. He balanced stinkers like his Week 10 performance against the Raiders, when he completed 7 of 27 passes and threw four picks, with a stretch run in which he put up only one DVOA mark under 30 percent in the Panthers' last six regular-season games. In those games, the team went 4-2, and its two losses were by a total of 10 points.
Delhomme may not be in the upper echelon of quarterbacks as he was in 2005, but he still has what it takes to lead the Panthers. Teams that make rash personnel decisions based on single-game performances tend not to return to the postseason too quickly. And where is Collins now? He just led another team (Tennessee) to the playoffs."

Quote :
"In a conference call with local reporters, Julius Peppers reiterated that he wants out of Carolina, especially if the Panthers use the franchise tag on him.

“If they decide to use the tag on me the first thing I will be doing is request a trade,” Peppers said
, according to Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com.

Peppers was asked if he planned on holding out if the Panthers couldn’t complete a trade.

“Anything after that is basically I don’t know,” Peppers said. “I don’t know what would be the next course of action.”

Franchising Peppers would cost the Panthers about $17 million. If Carolina can’t agree to a deal with offensive tackle Jordan Gross before the deadline, they could face a decision on which player to tag.

The way Peppers sees it, Carolina’s decision is an easy one.

Jordan Gross has came out and said he wants an extension,” Peppers said. “We have one player who says he does want to stay and one player who wants to move on. I would try to accommodate the guy who wants to be there.”

Peppers once again said he would be better utilized in a 3-4 defense, something he doesn’t see happening in Carolina.

“Coach (John) Fox is a 4-3 guy and I could never see him changing,” he said.

Teams have until Thursday to designate the franchise tag."

I was hoping he would be dominant for our Dline for a dozen years or so. Oh well. Time to start rethinking all these UNC draft picks, Charlotte... the proof is in the pudding...

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/02/16/panthers-trying-to-get-gross-signed/

Quote :
"
With the deadline for using the franchise tag less than 72 hours away, the Carolina Panthers are making a final push toward signing one of their two big-name free agents, so that the tag can be used on the other one.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Panthers are hoping to work out a deal with tackle Jordan Gross.

Citing unnamed sources, Schefter reports that the team and the player have made “significant progress,” prompting some to expect that a deal will be finalized this week.

It’s believed that Gross will be paid at a rate of $9 million per year.

Getting a deal done with Gross will allow the Panthers to apply the franchise tag to defensive end Julius Peppers. Based on his 2008 cap number of $13,902,500, the franchise tag for Peppers will require a one-year salary of$16,683,000 — 120 percent of his pay from last year.

Peppers has vowed that he’ll demand a trade if the team uses the franchise tag. Though the Panthers might be willing to comply, it’ll be interesting to see whether a new team will give Peppers a long-term deal premised on a first-year payout of $16,683,000.
"

now that is an interesting thought.

wow. I am kind of excited about the blockbuster Peppers trade to happen: maybe we end up alot better because of it? If he doesnt want to play here then we have to trade him - I dont want another Jenkins (who was also talented but underpeformed with us because he was moody).....

losing peppers and all those D coordinators really leaves alot of ?'s on defense.... I see most of our leveraged offseason moves going to boost the D. Don't expect the blockbuster trade to be for a QB

^^ That all sounds great except that Arizona doesn't use the 3-4

Pep sees James Harrison playing his ideal position and winning the Def POY and he thinks he can do it too. The problem is he has never played a game at LB on the college or pro level. That leaves huge question marks for potential traders at 16 mil pricetag. I think he would fit well with SF's unit and Singletary would love to have him. Plus, we would get the 10th pick. Sounds nice in theory I guess.

Along with SF.. Cleveland could also be a fit for a Peppers trade if we can get Gross signed to an extension and use the franchise tag on Peppers.

Mangini now in at coach, so they will keep the 3-4. They are fairly week at OLB/DE, and you know Mangini loves the athletic guys who can play both. Signed Calvin Pace and drafted Vernhon Golston last year in NY. They have the #5 pick which would be awesome. Maybe get BJ Raji to plug in the middle of the line.

I know we don't have to trade Peppers to a team running a 3-4(correct me if im wrong), but just playing around with the idea.

That's the only reason I can think of that he would want to play in a 3-4.. All DE's in a 3-4 really do is take up blockers. Maybe he wants to be used kind of like Pace for NYJ and Suggs for Baltimore. They play standing up, but also play on the line some too.

He wants to be DeMarcus Ware. The problem is, Ware has a motor that works all the time. Peppers does not. Also, as fluid an athlete as Peppers is, he's going to find out that dropping back into pass coverage every other play gets extremely old.

Oh well. Good riddance.

Make up your damn mind. If you don't want to play for us, then don't be so damn picky.

Only teams in NFC that play 3-4 are Dallas and San Fran. Not sure I can see him wanting to go to San Fran though.

I am ready to get Gross signed so we can tag Peppers and make sure to get something for him

I guess in the end we dont HAVE to do anything as long as we have a team willing to take him. What most likely will have to happen is pep's agent negotiate a long term extension with the trader then we sign him to the extension and trade his ass. No way a GM gives up what he will require without the guarantee he'll be around for five years or more.

Provided that deal gets completed, the Panthers are expected to put their franchise tag on defensive end Julius Peppers later today."

I heard on the radio that of the 4 teams that peppers has on his list 3 are NFC (including the cowboys) and 1 AFC. I'm just guessing but I have a sneaky suspicion that the Redskins are on there. I know they dont fit the defensive mold that Pep wants though. There are a few teams that fit the mold in the AFC and I feel like he wants to be on a contender. So here is my best guess list:

1. Dallas
2. Washington
3. SF
4. SD/NYJ/TENN
(less likely NE/BAL)

I'm going to check into where these teams are picking in the 1st round

do they still have "transition player" designation in the NFL? If yes, why couldn't we just make Gross a transition player, and Peppers a franchise player? or vice versa.

KC got a 1st and 2 3rd round picks for Jared Allen last year so that is probably a good place to start. Of the possible teams the first round

Dallas - no 1st round pick (sent to Detroit in Roy Williams trade)
Washington - 13th
SF - 10th
SD - 16th
NYJ - 17th
TENN - 30th

BALT - 26th
NE - 23rd

Kiper has his first round up and I see that he projescts DE/OLB Aaron Maybin from Penn State to SF with the 10th pick. That sounds like exactly the position that Peppers is interested in. If SF needs front seven help and has the picks to do it they should be our first choice. Hopefully, Peppers would agree to terms with them. Washington also is projected to take DE Brian Orakpo from Texas. Seems like they always get robbed in these big trades so I would love to get them involved.

The problem is that if pep wants to play LB really then he is going to take a huge pay cut. LB's don't make nearly the money of a premier DE. He would be smart to sign as DE and get a lineman # and then drop in pass coverage every now and then instead of playing LB and making half the money he would have normally.
