you, sir, are behaving like a true dumbass. the modulus is a fundamental component of basic integer division. It goes back at least as far as Euclid.

Only in an FDA-regulated environment producing Class III medical devices. Look, man, i didnt come in here intending to pick a fight with you, but your ignorance on this particular subject is astounding.
Stick to stringing CAT5 through office furniture and scheduling AV definition updates, okay? Serious. in the meantime, you could check into doing some evening courses: http://cet.waketech.edu/Departments/csc/default.html

"%" is not an arithmetic operator and the interpretations of modulo in Computer Science differ not only from language to language and machine to machine, but from the mathematical treatment of modular arithmetic as well. That's the point I was trying to make, and there's already another thread for this bullshit in Tech Talk if you'd really like to continue this discussion.

OK, so I just saw the epic tales of trolling thread which linked to the Tech Talk thread. I don't want to get involved in that. But anyway, I'll just say that modular arithmetic is used quite frequently in certain problems of number theory and abstract algebras. You can use it to prove some pretty neat results.
I never used it much in my computer science work, though. Not to say it isn't useful, I just never needed it often. 3/6/2009 8:39:32 PM |

My bottom line is that
1) Math is fun. Yay math! 2) Some people get too upset about quibbling over semantics; I don't, so I'd rather stay out of this argument.
The most common application I can think of that would tie together the mathematical and comp sci constructs of the modulo operator is if you're writing a program that simulates nonlinear dynamical systems, or something to generate fractals. Everyone likes fractals, right? I mean, look at this thread before it got derailed. Pretty! 3/6/2009 8:45:01 PM |

oh, look.
