"Well, they kill nearly all the life in the soil, which harms the ecosystem. Then, they get washed into the river or lake, and kill most of the fish and other life in and around the water, which harms the ecosystem. Then, it goes on to killing birds, bees, other animals, and entire ecosystems. Add this all up and it is quite damaging, in a long-term way, to the overall environment as well as to biodiversity. Damage to the environmental and to biodiversity harms everyone -- so everyone is a victim. Everyone. Fuck you for not seeing that way.

Also, there is little doubt that such poisons are responsible for making humans sick. I mean, there's no shortage of talk on the subject: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=victims+of+pesticide+residue
"

Let me break it down for you: Pesticide - the prefix meaning insects and rodents and the suffix, cide, means to kill. So duh it would kill them. That is not what I asked you. I guess it is because you couldn't find anything then. Using google as a source is laughable. Don't know why I even continue playing with you.

There's no way an intelligent and good person properly educated on the issue would ever support this crap... (as anything other than a last resort. If we find ourselves in a nuclear winter, I'll be buying some miracle-gro."

Highly irrelevant, but I'll entertain you. Everybody in my family is self-employed. No businesses/corporations etc. and not rich enough for stocks/bonds or the like. The only thing that could even come close would be my purchasing of NC-home grown veggies. None of that bullshit Organics from California. I suppose I could propose the same assumption that you or your family works for/ runs/ supports the Organic industry, but I really don't care, nor see how that is relevant.

Way to miss the point, then. I did answer you. Everyone is the victim. Everyone. (Go die please)

I didn't use google as a source to answer your question -- I already answered it, and was using google to demonstrate the amount of talk about the subject. Can you not read?

Um, not really. If my guess were true, it might indicate that your views are biased. Are you fucking stupid? That is clearly relevant. My guess was wrong, apparently (assuming you're being honest,) but still.... I contend that there's no way an intelligent and good person properly educated on the issue would ever support this GMO-crops and chemical-farm crap as anything other than a last resort. You must be not intelligent, not good, and/or not properly educated. (I don't know you, and I don't really give a shit about you, but do me a favor: In 30 or so years, when most everything I've said in this thread about the GMOs vs. organics debate is accepted as reality, please remember that you were wrong that whole time.)

Yeah, you should try to buy local foods whenever possible...

apparently some vegetarians believe they are better than people who eat meat and will be able to live more years of their lives worrying about animals.

ugh. so many people who squeal about organic food have never even tried growing a plant. the reason people use pesticides is that there are things in the soil that will kill the plants or make the crop inedible. when crop failure like that occurs on a mass scale, it typically leads to famine and social meltdown.

Furthermore, there are things in the soil which, if they become established in the crop, can make you very sick. glyphosphate is wildly popular because you cant weed fields of beans or cereals effectively at all, and some of the weeds which can be intermixed can be very harmful to your health if they are mixed in with the product at harvest.

a lot of farming is done on land that isnt necessarily completely ideal. this requires soil supplementation that is difficult to achieve and maintain through strictly organic means, and selection of crops that have been bred (through traditional means or transformation) to thrive in those conditions. obviously farmers want to use all the organic fertilizers they can, because they are often available free or at low cost as compared to chemical fertilizers, but the demand outstrips the supply. likewise, no farmer wants to be causing water pollution via runoff because that means the fertilizer he paid for is being wasted, and they take preventative measures if they are smart businessmen.

people that are scared of transformed organisms just dont know how relatively innocuous it is and how frequently it occurs to us and in history. every virus you get transforms your cells. ever had a wart? chances are you still have plenty of cells in the general area which are transformed. in the unbelievably rare (it hasnt happened yet) event that an insidious or toxic gene product is formed by transformation of a crop, we will know fairly immediately, and well before it gets into commercial production. plant toxins aren't subtle, and crop quality is constantly monitored to make sure it is still up to the standards people expect from their food.

finally, organic farming is useless on a mass scale if it can only be profitably done in certain isolated areas defined by the absence of pervasive pests which make growing the crop organically impossible elsewhere. it is definitely worse for the environment as a whole for you to eat an organically farmed apple from a huge farm on the west coast that was shipped in a refrigerated truck than one grown in NC but sprayed for black spot, and certainly more land was polluted by the gasoline it took to transport the organic apples.

if you really want to make an impact, buy stuff from small, local farms and dont worry so much about what they put on it before you get it. just wash it thoroughly and you`ll be doing the environment and the local economy a tremendous favor.
