Only in chit chat does a guy who loves tulips hate gays.

Or did someone point that out already? I'm not reading 3 pages of ignorance about something that should be a none issue for anyone but the two people involved.

Yes, and everyone who argues for it is doing so for religious reasons, no matter how much they may deny it.

I'm pointing out that it's odd that they demand I justify the philosophical and religious underpinnings of my position, when they believe they have no obligation to do the same.

Well just so you know the bible also says it's okay to burn a woman alive if she isn't a virgin before she gets married....but you don't see people protesting for that do you?

on that note, I'm done with this discussion

pretty sure she meant prostitution in which according to leviticus 21:9 is punishable by burning alive

but regardless of how you wanna knit pick her statements, you cant do the same with the bible (specifically the old testament). you can go ahead and follow codes of laws that were put forth 3000 years ago in a society much different than ours. go ahead and write your congressman asking for stoning to be brought back while youre at it.

i know for a fact that shes read the bible plenty of times, im sure she just hasnt read it with the same hate for humanity and fear mongering that you seem to enjoy it with, you sick perverted unhappy freak of nature

No, that's the punishment for a priest's daughter who becomes a prostitute.

I never said that homosexuality should be illegal, nor what the punishment would be. I never said that I want to follow the Old Testament law as a current civil code. I never even said I followed a religion that reveres the Bible. I do, but I didn't say that.

Just to show how ignorant you are and how presumptive you are being - I voted Libertarian for the last two elections. I favor complete end to every part of the drug war, don't like the police, and dislike Republicans even more than Democrats. I loathe both Presidents named Bush and their stupid wars. The "Religious Right" drives me bananas, and I'd rather join a protest march with PETA than be seen at a Republican convention or rally.

You make a lot of assumptions, and they're all wrong.

No, she has not. That's a guarantee. "Reading the Bible" is NOT the same thing as "Cracked open and read a few passages from random places, as directed by the ideologue who is reinforcing my opinion about what it says."

You don't get to read 5% of a book and say, "Yeah, I've read that."

Nope. Just taking a 99.99% bet.

The number of Christians who have read every word in the bible is way below 10%. The odds of an agnostic, atheist, or anybody else having their eyes hit every word is significantly lower.

It's not something you can just get up and do in an afternoon.

There are plenty of churches that bless gay marriages. So if marriage is a religious-only thing, then what place does government have in picking which religion is the correct one? If marriage is secular government, then what place does religion have in the discussion?

Marriage isn't a religious-only thing.

Quote :

There is no such thing as a secular government. It is inescapable that every government and every culture is run according to the philosophical and religious principles of the people in them.

It's not that we should have religion running government; it's that every government everywhere is run by a philosophy and a religion (or some confluence of many), and it's impossible to avoid that.

Allowing gay marriage is just as much a religious policy for the government as if it's outlawed.

so why not get rid of a govt recognition of "marriage" altogether? you live with who you want to. if you want to sign some sort of financial contract then do so. cover your own ass. get rid of the tradition and religion and all you're left with is a legal matter.

You can't get rid of tradition and religion. Even if you wanted to, it's not possible. If it were an entirely private contract with no formal government definition, that's still a religious policy held by the government.

The government would be adhering to a religious principle that says:

"Either A) There is no God or B) If there is one, He/She/It has not told the government to outlaw gay marriage or C) There is a God and he/she/it has told government to outlaw gay marriage, and we're not gonna follow that."

Those are all religious principles.

If the government "privatizes" marriage - it is taking one of those religious stances. It's inescapable. There is no such thing as a government that doesn't favor a religion.

You're arguing for the government to make a religious determination just as much as I am. It's just which one.

Canada has gay marriage. they will even consider you for immigration on the merit of being a homosexual couple with persecuted love and not having access to equal rights.

i don't think that by giving you the option to do whatever your religion says do that the govt is favoring anyone

everyone can do like they want to, as it should be

Option D) there may or may not be a god who may or may not give a damn about homos and it is your decision to decide
