I applied on the 29th, it had a thing when you started the application to check the box for whether you were applying for GS7, GS9, or GS11 and I checked all three.

It looks like they've updated the posting now, and it's only open to 11s at this point. Not sure what's going on there.

You can get a room in a town house in Columbia Heights for pretty cheap. I did this for a couple years when I first moved to DC and had to get my money up.

I found that post confusing because they intimate being a District snob, which would indicate that they're referring to the Anacostia, in which case, what kind of shitty job are they working to have clients east of the Anacostia? And if they're talking from an Arlington perspective, and have an issue with coming in to DC? Doesn't make sense.

FuhCtious, your best bet is to get on craigslist and hit it hard.

You're probably going to find yourself looking in NW. The cheaper NW housing is going to be up in the Columbia Heights green/yellow line neighborhoods, while it gets a little more upscale heading up the redline/Connecticut Ave corridor, especially as you head west in to the palisades and GP. I've heard that there are some quiet neighborhoods up near Tenleytown/American U but then you get to fight the red line to commute in to downtown. If you're able to drive, Glover Park is a pretty nice place to look. I live on the Hill (NE quadrant) and it's my favorite neighborhood in DC, it's accessible and low key, and a real community unlike a lot of other neighborhoods. But as a renter, you just want to be close to work and close to social stuff. Maybe even look in the NoMa area northwest of Union Station.

I've been in DC for 8 years now, and I work downtown as well, so PM me with any specific questions you have.

No one would refer to Bolling (or really any installation) like that. Also, If they're going to Bolling, they're just hopping on 295, which doesn't see any of the SE that would give rise to that sort of comment. It's just a very awkward way to describe it.

I worked in the defense sector for 3 years, never heard of PEOs or supported programs referred to as clients. Maybe my experience was an outlier.

What commands or offices are even located at Bolling anymore that someone would need to visit? Last I looked they have a few USCG helicopters that land there, and occasionally I see UH-60s fly over Anacostia Park lifting off from there while playing softball...

I personally wouldn't subject myself to the cost and congestion of downtown DC, just to commute out everyday. Live in silver spring or maybe college park which may be more of your speed.

cousin lives in foggybottom and i stayed with her a few times, it was pretty cool
a friend lived in arlington, va...i loved the fact that it was close to georgetown...again a

i lived in columbia, md for a few months and there wasnt anything to do...i pretty much ended up going to DC whenever i got a chance

anyways i wanted to know what are some nice areas to live which are close to bowie md...i guess i will look into silver spring and college park areas...thanks for the suggestions so far.....please to share more!

^^because many young people enjoy city life? My college roommate recently moved to DC and he decided to live downtown, even though his job is across the river in Congress Heights. His commute is about an hour one way every day using public transportation. He reads while riding the metro and the bus, so it's not the same as driving down I-40 for an hour. He could have lived closer to work, but it would not be the same even in Old Town Alexandria, which is probably the closest place with any kind of life. I agree that having a car downtown is tougher, also people with kids are probably better off living in Virginia or Maryland, but for a social twentysomething that does not plan to travel outside of the city very frequently, downtown is the place to be.

^Arlington is nice, but it would be a tough commute to Bowie than downtown, unless you take the highway and it's off-peak hours. Silver spring is OK but only a small part of it is walkable/high density environment. Same with college park, except it's even more run down.

What's your budget for rent?

i think most people in this area understand the area south of dupont/logan circle and between farragut west/north and metro center to be "downtown". if you send someone off looking for a place to live downtown it could be misleading.

it's clear that Tarun's considerations are whether or not to live in the District proper.

Tarun, your best bet is to follow EMCE's advice and try out Silver Spring or CP. Rent a place for a bit and see if you like it or if you'd prefer to move inside the District. Your other option might be to live somewhere where you can access Union Station and just take the MARC to Bowie, but that only works if you work close to the Bowie State station or your work has a shuttle of some kind. You probably don't want to consider any other part of PG County based on what you've said.

If you want, you could also try some of the gentrifying areas around Georgia Ave NW. Even with a reverse commute though, getting out of the city in the AM is going to be a bitch no matter which direction you head.

If Tarun is looking for city life in the District, I would suggest that he looks at the adams morgan/dupont circle/logan circle/columbia heights area if he can afford it, or the area around Union Station if you are looking for something a little more affordable. Commute to Bowie would double, but at least it would be worth commuting. I'm not so sure that Silver Spring and CP would be that much more fun to live than just staying in Bowie.

thirding silver spring/CP areas. if you're going to be working outside the district, i don't think it'd be worth living there considering not only the hassle of commuting, but also maryland has a more favorable income tax rate than the district as well. you can save a decent chunk of money by not living in the district, but as long as you're near a metro station you can still take advantage of being close for nightlife, day time activities, etc.

I know plenty of people that commute out of the city and are fine with it - just depends on the person and how much you value living in DC.

CP sucks ass, so not live there no matter what any one says. Silver spring is ok but you're getting further from bowie, why not just stay in DC. Plenty of cheap places to be had when you split a house with people, just find a neighborhood you want to stay near (Ust / Hst / etc) and find a place.

many people find Annapolis nice to live too, if that's your thing-- just an option.

ideally i would like to stay in DC and commute out of the city to work but i guess initially i wanna stay close to work as its a new job so i will be putting in a lot of hours....maybe once i settle down well and work isnt too bothering then i can think of moving into the city and enjoy the good life

good idea to get a short lease place in Bowie, till you get the lay of the land. Otherwise, if you know what neighborhood you want to live in, just say f-it and go for it. Long hours (unless govt job) and long commutes are common place here.
