Pierre Thomas > Kevin Smith this year.
Reggie Bush will not be able to stay on the field, and Thomas will get lots of red zone carries.
Kevin Smith will have a decent year, slightly above last year...somewhere in between a RB2 and RB3. 8/23/2009 12:49:12 AM |

you might have some problems at RB this year, none of those guys (maybe with the exception of D. Ward) are clearcut starters. I would drop Andre Brown and replace him with a serviceable RB or WR
and as far as having 4 starting RBs on my roster - its an 8 team league with 6 bench spots so there were plenty of good players available once my starting roster was set. 8/23/2009 9:13:03 AM |

^^ you might end up wanting to trade either PR or Brees for a better RB. (unless you're league has you starting 2 QBs, that would be nasty)

^^^ As mentioned already, you don't have anyone resembling an RB1. Your WR situation is fine, but it should be better with the RBs that you drafted.
There's really no need to have two top 4 QBs on your team, unless you get one for a steal and plan on using him for trade bait.
I feel like you could probably trade Brees for a solid RB1, at worst Portis or Jacobs, but I'd feel around for what you can get for Rivers and Stewart in a package trade. 8/23/2009 10:15:48 AM |

had our draft Saturday for our hardcore league (I think the 7th year overall), 12 owners, 2 keepers each, PPR, defenses are worth a LOT...great draft, lots of trades, people moving up to jump people etc.
I highly recommend having your draft at Blinco's.
My team: QB - Matt Ryan QB - Joe Flacco RB - AP (keeper) RB - Chris Johnson (keeper) RB - Donald Brown RB - Cedric Benson WR - Ochocinco WR - Anthony Gonzalez WR - Santana Moss WR - Donald Driver WR - Laurent Robinson K - Rob Bironas DEF - Pittsburgh DEF - Green Bay 8/24/2009 12:30:35 AM |

aside from the keepers, that seems like kind of a weak team overall, especially at WR
although on second thought, i guess with that many starting spots the whole league would be a little watered down. is donald brown a starter?

had my first draft yesterday.... 10 team:
1. (4) DeAngelo Williams 2. (17) Brandon Jacobs 3. (24) Reggie Wayne 4. (37) Terrell Owens 5. (44) Antonio Bryant 6. (57) Jay Cutler 7. (64) Marshawn Lynch 8. (77) Jerricho Cotchery 9. (84) Michael Crabtree 10. (97) Visanthe Shiancoe 11. (104) Chicago 12. (117) Brett Favre 13. (124) Zach Miller 14. (137) Jason Elam
probably took Crabtree a little too early, and i accidentally picked two TE's with the same bye, but otherwise not terrible for my first draft i s'pose. Hopefully my QBs don't suck too bad. 8/24/2009 7:15:05 AM |

^^ those arent starting spots...
and you have to appreciate how high was have defensive scoring... a shutout (just a shutout, not taking into account INTs, fumbles etc.) is worth 40 points... so Pittsburgh is a complete badass. So I have two top 10 RBs and the best defense. I am a ton of depth at RB, but I am weak at WR and QB. 8/24/2009 11:17:21 AM |

not at all... a defense on a good day should get 20-40 points. you have ONE fantasy "player" representing 11 real players or 1/3 of the actual game. Systems where defenses only get 5-10 points on average are retarded, they are basically on the same level as kickers 8/24/2009 11:28:46 AM |

^^ thanks buddy, thanks
^ Sack 2 Interception 3 Fumble Recovery 3 Touchdown 6 Safety 3 Block Kick 2 Points Allowed 0 points 40 Points Allowed 1-6 points 30 Points Allowed 7-13 points 20 Points Allowed 14-20 points 10 Points Allowed 21-27 points 0 Points Allowed 28-34 points -5 Points Allowed 35+ points -20
The scoring system has been fined tuned over the years, it is now perfection. As I said above, because the 1 fantasy player is representing 11 defensive players a good performance should equal at least 2 good offensive players performances.

^i disagree with the system being perfection...i would hate it. whether or not the defense represents 11 players or not doesn't matter...it is still one fantasy player. one draft pick or free agent pick up. a garbage time field goal that takes a defense's opponent from 32 to 35 costs you 15 points. that would be infuriating and stupid. 8/24/2009 3:11:13 PM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
ah yes, the old "points at the end are worth more than points in the first quarter" argument... the defense shouldnt have allowed the first 32 points to begin with...
and ok, we will go with defense being one fantasy player... if thats the case then why is "one fantasy player" such as a QB or RB worth so much more than a defense in a typical system? They are just "one fantasy player".
Our system makes it a complete game and very realistic. If you have a stout defense, you might be able to get by with a mediocre offense. If your defense sucks you better have the Great Show on Turf equivalent on offense. Defense isnt an afterthought like most leagues. People dont like it at first because it is different but after one year in our league people love it, makes games so much more interesting

That's why I like my league where it's not just one defense unit, it's IDPs out the whazzoo. 2 DTs, 2 DEs, 1 LB, 2 CB, 1 S And ESPN fixed some of their player positions this year so Ware is no longer an option for a DE and Thomas Davis is no longer playable as a S. 8/24/2009 3:27:21 PM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, that would be the alternative... we've talked about switching to that but it takes the total score element out of things for defense... still might switch at some point down that road 8/24/2009 3:28:52 PM |
BigDave41 All American 1301 Posts user info edit post |
^^^ok, i take back the part about a garbage time field goal that was just for dramatic effect. say you have pittsburgh defense and big ben throws a pick in the first quarter and they run it back to the 1. pitt defense makes a great stand and holds them to a field goal...but the rest of the game they score 32 points. you still get docked 15 points because of an offensive mistake (yes, the defense shouldn't have given up the other 32, i agree...). surely there are similiar instances of this throughout the year.
^^i don't like that either...i'm a fan of the standard way and more standard scoring.

Here's my team, 12 man, no PPR, no flex. Any suggestions are appreciated.
QB - Matt Ryan RB - Matt Forte RB - Clinton Portis WR - Roddy White WR - Antonio Bryant WR - Santana Moss TE - Jason Witten K - Robbie Gould D - Chargers Bench
QB - Jason Campbell RB - Beanie Wells RB - Ahmad Bradshaw WR - Tory Holt TE - Visanthe Shiancoe
I'm not sure what to do about having both Matt Ryan and Roddy White on the same team. I didn't actually plan on drafting Ryan, and it seems risky to start a QB/WR combo.
I also have both Portis and Santana Moss. I'm hoping Santana Moss blows up on weeks 2 and 3 against the Lions and the Rams. Maybe, then I can trade him.
I like Beanie Wells and Visanthe Shiancoe on my bench. Campbell has been sucking and I'm not sure Bradshaw will ever be good enough to start in this league unless Jacobs gets hurt.
Do I need to make any preseason trades or dump anyone on my bench? Should I just wait and see what happens in the regular season?

without too much analyzing, you have a great looking team. It's apparent with Portis, Forte, White, Witten, etc, that you waited on a QB. Good job there. You'll have nothing to worry about with Ryan and White. That's a nice combo that will be targeted for years to come.
I am interested in knowing how either Portis or White made it to you in the 3rd round, as it would have had to have been one of them taken there, then Witten in the 4th, right?
Your WR's aren't the main attraction, but Witten is like a solid WR #2, though not having a PPR league takes a little of his value away.
In short, great team. I would focus on dropping your backup TE and going after a sleeper WR out there in 12 man waiver worlds like maybe Crayton, Heyward-Bey, Josh Cribbs, etc. 8/24/2009 6:27:05 PM |

I had the #3 pick. 5 QBs and Marion Barber got taken very early, so I was able to pick up Portis and White in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I took Witten at #46 in the 4th and picked up Matt Ryan in the 5th since he was the highest ranked QB left and they seemed to be flying off the board. In retrospect, I probably should have drafted WR/WR in the 5th and the 6th and picked up Cutler in the 8th. 8/24/2009 7:29:19 PM |

Nothing to panic about yet for all of you Derrick Ward followers, but it is interesting that a completely healthy Ward will not start in Preseason Week 3, the biggest of all preseason weeks. Starting in his place is Cadillac Williams, a surprise considering most assume he is third on the Bucs depth chart at running back.
Coach Raheem Morris said Williams will play two series on Thursday, followed by either Derrick Ward or Earnest Graham playing the next two, with the odd man out getting a single series. He also said that could be how he manages his three backs during the regular season.
Very Interesting and further proof that if a 2 man RBBC wasn't shitty enough, the 3 man RBBC is even worse. The worst news is, more and more teams are doing the 3 man (Oakland, Tampa, New Orleans, etc) 8/26/2009 9:47:39 PM |
