Places that serve premium gourmet hotdogs don't serve ketchup because ketchup is something made to cloak the taste of low quality meat. It would be insulting to cloak the tatste of a hot dog at a high quality establishment.

The same goes for potatoes. The red hot dogs you eat in nc need lots of ketchup but if you ever leave nc and go toa real hot dog stand you will notice the difference. Many places won't take your order if you call it a hot dog either. They'll simply say " we don't serve hot dogs here"

typically when i get a hotdog i want mustard, ketchup, onion

but i'm ok without the ketchup - just give me the mustard and onion. or give me chili and mustard and onion. or just chili. or just onion.

or just the damn hotdog.

Its accurate to say that NC dogs are made from low quality, high processed pork scraps. Roast grill is the only place that offers a halfway decent dog but their chili is the thing that makes them special. The rest are absolute crap in a bun so you obviously have to drown it with ketchup.

Also, if you go to any real dog or french fry vendor they won't put ketchup on a hot dog. Some don't carry it at all but most do because they understand kids need ketchup.

I don't put ketchup on hot dogs myself, but to say NC has inferior hot dogs or that people only put ketchup on hot dogs in NC is ridiculous.

I never said that it was only NC. I'm just saying NC doesn't have good hot dogs. People eat and sale bad hot dogs all over but real hot dogs are very hard to find in NC ( ie one decent hot dog in the whole state). Its probably because of all the local pork companies in the area making cheap available pork scrap dogs and often adding chicken scraps, husks and all kinds of nasty shit. I'm also sure places like cookout, char grill and snoopy's are the "local favorites" so its a fair claim that NC just doesn't know what a real hot dog is. Its a different culture. Which is why you have people with mindsets like

Go to Chicago, or even ny and find good dogs all over. Go to Florida, and California and find plenty of good dogs here and there.

So i just grabbed some ketchup packets out of my drawer that have been there a year or two. The ketchup is brown. I've eaten old ketchup in the past, but I'm hesitant. Would you eat brown ketchup?
