"The Chicago Blackhawks have called a press conference on Thursday where it is expected the team will announce the signings of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith to multi-year contract extensions.

Sources tell TSN that Toews and Kane will sign identical five-year contract extensions worth about $6.3 million per season. Meanwhile Keith's deal is worth $72 million spread over a whopping 13 years at an annual average of $5.5 million.

The Hawks currently sit just over $1.17 million under the NHL's mandated Salary cap. With all three players locked up long-term, the Blackhawks will likely be forced to make a trade or waive a player to free up “tagging” cap space for next season. Names rumoured to be on the move include defencemen Brent Sopel and Cam Barker, with the Toronto Maple Leafs apparently showing interest in Sopel."

John Stevens has been fired as head coach of the Flyers. Don't be surprised if Peter Laviolette is one of the leading candidates for the job.

I just heard about this on the radio, I wouldn't mind Lavi coaching my team. I did love how evil and brooding John Stevens always looked though.

Shutouts are nice things.

Games 6 and 7 in 2001 say hello, though.

This may be old news, but I just became aware of the greatness that is the Florida Panthers radio announcers goal calls. If only Chuck K would add in the pop culture references

Remember how much fighting irritates Laviolette? We're 5:33 into this game on Versus and there have been 3 fights lol.

Why in god's name did Craig Adams decide fighting batshit insane Daniel Carcillo?

BTW, Philly shows a lot of toughness in the first six minutes in every way...except in stopping goals, 2-0 Pens.

the flyers are hilarious

carcillo picked a fight last year in the playoffs with the lead, and the pens were energized right through the cup

maybe kadams is looking for that spark again, to last . . . 7 months?

and carcillo then scored . . . always embarrassing when the goon scores, still 3-1 pens though

So apparently the Wild's equipment van caught on fire at Scotiabank Place earlier today

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=302834

Quote :
"According to a report by the CANADIAN PRESS all of goaltender Nicklas Backstrom's equipment was destroyed. It appears as though at least some of the Wild players are now left without any skates, sticks or equipment and will need to purchase completely new equipment before tomorrow's game."

^He's too busy thinking up ways to fix the draft lottery and playoffs in the Penguins' favor to worry about other teams equipment.

IN OTHER NEWS:
How does Paul Holmgren still have a job? I've never see a general manager play so much to the wants of his respective fan base. His whole mishandling of the Pronger contract is just laughable, and bringing in Carcillo at the trade deadline last year has just proven to be stupid like everyone knew it would. Until the 1975ers realize that you can't win a game with your fists, they will continue to have early exits from the playoffs, or not make them at all. Now you've got a locker room full of knuckle draggers that is by many reports split in half and your #1 goaltender does cocaine off the asses of strippers and couldn't stop a beach ball. Good thing they have the most leaderiest leader in the world in Mike Richards to solve the problem

Thank jeebus for Ray Shero. Everything that man touches turns to gold.

That goes without saying. He just throws money at big name free agents and hopes everything meshes. I'm just glad that both of these guys are in the Pens division. When Lou Lamoriello decides he is finally done killing hockey, maybe he'll go away and it will be smooth sailing through the division.

The Atlantic Division has seen it's fair share of stupid GMs. Glen Sather, Paul Holmgren, Mike Milbury. I don't know if I'd put Craig Patrick in with those guys because he actually had a good deal of success. I blame the Pens previous ownership for a lack of foresight that lead to the rash of salary dumps. Once the lockout had ended though, it seemed like the game might have passed him by.

All this really has nothing to do with anything, but I've been bored today and have been thinking about it.

There's this, regarding the Wild's equipment fire:

Quote :
"I will say this: Backstrom was as uptight as I've ever seen him this morning. As a player just said, "you can tell he's worried.""

Not to go into Tripp mode, but as a goalie I can tell you that if I had to play a game in all new gear I would be freaked the fuck out.

There are worse GMs out there than Sather. He's pretty crappy in free agency, but he pulls off some excellent trades.

Grats Marty on being the sole title holder of most shutouts, against the very formidable Penguins no less! I'll cheer about it more after I see the game tomorrow and I am no longer worn out.

The funny thing is that guy is a Hasek honk and his numbers occasionally make Roy look less than stellar, but at its heart that entire blog is devoted to helping display the fact that Brodeur has no more talent than Curtis Joseph.

What I find the most interesting is that Marty was actually pulled after the first on Saturday after giving up 3 goals on like 6 or 7 shots against the Atlanta Trashers and then comes back last night to make history.

Most elite goaltenders have no problem coming back from a bad game, and actually are more inclined to have a stellar performance after a game like that.
