so we have to read this book "Good to Great" for our marketing/management class.
here is what the author considers "Great Companies".

I'm sorry I feel like they should reconsider assigning that book for you to read. I hate when people are assigned outdated crap. My friend is taking some class on medicine and they have to read papers that talk about an excess of physicians, when right now there is actually a deficit. Wtf is the point??? Grrr.

so i have an immunology test next week AND a quiz (imm.) due monday. gonna study today....but i left my book in dunn
so for the past 30 minutes ive been trying to get a head start on my marketing paper. i love writing. i hate getting started.
it's on this book... http://www.cocoonworks.com/library/mindmaps/business/business%20management/good%20to%20great/1-GoodisEnemyofGreat-Cangoodcompaniesbec.html (the one i talked about earlier this page).
i agree with the concepts of the book, but also they seem pretty hard to follow unless you have an excessive amount of money or are lucky enough to have a business witha good foundation just plopped into your lap. so i think im gonna write my paper as a fresh new pharmacy grad wanting to start something big and show how while the concepts are good...they arent very practical :/

ok so im going to try and explain this (this is great studying! )
Now..HIV is mainly a disease that destroys T cells (CD4). but HIV can infect 2 ways: M tropic-attaches to CCR5 (chemokine receptor) T tropic-attaches to CXCR4 ( i cant remember what receptor that is)
CCR5 is on monocytes (macrophages, dendritic cells...) and CXCR4 is on T cells. monocytes can be found in sexual secretions, T cells...not so much.
some people, due to a natural mutation, lack CCR5 receptors. this means if they have sex with an infected user the HIV has nothing to "hold on to". therefore these people have a naturally strong resistance. now if they use drugs intravenously and use the same needle as an infected they are SOL b/c the infection reaches their T cells that have the CXCR4 receptors.
pretty cool huh?
estimated 10-15% of caucasions have this mutation 2% of african americans. 3/25/2010 4:35:51 PM

ok. so we're studying cancer (overview) right now...
i thought this was a cool case study:
a woman dies and both of her kidneys are donated to two different unrelated individuals. within 2 years both patients had metastic melanoma. as it happened the deceased donor had been diagnosed with primary melanoma earlier in her life (about 14 years before death) but was treated and then considered tumor free. actually the tumor cells just resided in her kidney where they were kept in check by the immune system. when they were transplanted the new patients and their immune systems weren't used to this tumor - it grew and became metastatic.
crazy shit

there was an article in N&O just the other day about this very thing but also trying to come up w/ better (ie faster) screening for donated organs the article showed that most times when the organ was removed after cancer was discovered the person made a full recovery 4/19/2010 10:14:38 PM
