Please to teach me the wonders of Agave Nectar

Nice bump. So I originally started using Agave Nectar because I was reading all about how it was excellent for type I diabetics and the glycemic index. It doesn't raise my blood sugar like regular sugar does.

I have been hearing and reading how it is equal to high fructose corn syrup. I haven't been able to find hard core facts about it just a lot of hear-say type articles. I still use it instead of sugar when baking. 3/4 cups=1 cup of sugar. I also use it to sweeten my coffee.

^ iiiiiiiiinteresting. i've always heard good things about it. bethenny frankel swears by it. i stick to my low sugar syrup - just use it sparingly.

So, would it be a good thing for me to use if I'm trying not to eat things that cause a lot of insulin to be released?

It's low gi, which is awesome, but if it tastes sweet couldn't it trick my body in to releasing insulin anyways?

I am not sure, ma'am. I just know it doesn't jack my sugar up like regular sugar does.

I guess I shall be researching this more thoroughly, as well as calling a doctor/nutritionist.

thank you for your information!

elise, just because it's sweet doesn't mean it can "trick" your pancreas into releasing insulin

it's about the ingredients and its all about how the endocrine system works

if your syrup is high in glucose, then your pancreas will react by releasing insulin

so, do you think it is an acceptable sugar substitute for me? I have insulin resistance, and have a high chance of developing diabetes because it runs in my family and I have PCOS.

Quote :
"Excess fructose consumption has been hypothesized to be a cause of insulin resistance, obesity,[40] elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, leading to metabolic syndrome."

from Wiki

If you already have insulin resistance, the fructose in agave nectar will only increase your insulin resistance.

also from Wiki:

Quote :
"Agave nectar consists primarily of fructose and glucose. One source gives 92% fructose and 8% glucose; another gives 56% fructose and 20% glucose. These differences, it is presumed, reflect variation from one vendor of agave nectar to another."

If agave nectar has both fructose and glucose and they exist as a disaccharide, an enzyme in your intestines can break their bond and then you'll have free fructose and free glucose in your system. The different vendors have varying percentages so choose carefully if you're weary of glucose.

I guess this is why it's great for people who have existing diabetes:

Quote :
"Fructose is often recommended for diabetics because it does not trigger the production of insulin by pancreatic ß cells, probably because ß cells have low levels of GLUT5.[54][55][56] Fructose has a very low glycemic index of 19 ± 2, compared with 100 for glucose and 68 ± 5 for sucrose."

Sorry about that, boo. Man, I hate it for you because I can't stand any artificial sweetner because of the after taste. If you find a new one, let me know.
