Quote : | "It was not a random mutation that gave some giraffes longer necks." |
Of course it wasn't a trait that some giraffes had bigger necks than others, just as some humans have bigger hands, ears, noses, or feet than others, and that in this instance having the longer neck made that giraffe more likely to acquire food and survive.
such a belief would be asinine.
clearly what happened is that the giraffes used their necks a whole lot and this stretched them out and as a result their children's necks were really long and so on and so on and so on.
just like if i work out really hard and build lots of muscle my kids will have that.

^^Then dare I ask how it occurred? Did trees suddenly get taller and the giraffes started stretching really tall and passed those traits to their kids?

super tall and super small phenotypes already existed in the proto-giraffe population, just like it does in humans today. The family from little people, big world and motherfucking shaq are naturally extant, non-single gene mutation phenotypes in our population, just at a very low frequency. This is because extreme huge size and extreme tiny size do not confer an advantage to surviving to adulthood and having an opportunity to procreate.
If something happened and we all had to live in tunnels from now on, and people made their livings from gathering diamonds in the tiniest tunnels, there would probably be a gradual shift to smaller phenotypes being more prevalent in the population. This would be because shaq would be stuck in the the biggest tunnels and not get enough diamonds to survive/convince women to let him knock them up, while troy verner and that annoying midget kid would be scooping up bling by the handful and could get tons of chicks. standing in the tunnel or trying to squeeze through small passage ways isnt going to make shaq any smaller or change his gonads, but if you look at the next generation there will be 10 of troy verner kids, carrying one copy of the tiny allele and 1 shaq kid with the huge allele. the next generation there could be 100 tiny alleles and 5 huge alleles, and eventually the huge allele would have a tiny, tiny frequency less than we see today. Thats how the human race would turn into gnomes from a tunnel event, not from stalactites shaving off everyones backfat. 1/14/2010 2:49:34 PM |

I'm not sure how my post that you are referring to does not answer this very question. I based this off of the fact that "too little UV penetrating the skin (too dark-skinned under dim sunlight) increases folate but reduces vitamin D." Couple this with a basic understanding of probability and I don't get what is hard to grasp. I mean acknowledge it and dispute it, but I guess that is tough if you honestly don't understand it.
The problem is that you base your view on the oversimplified:
Quote : | "Physical adjustments to your environment often alter your dna which is passed on." |
I'm going to acknowledge and dispute this. I would agree with this statement 100% if you replaced "your" with "the" in both instances. To me it seems that you think since the environment can indeed induce/drive evolution that it must be the individual humans themselves changing instead of a trend involving hundreds of thousands of people, their collective gene pool, and a myriad of variables. What you propose is simplified to the point that it no longer represents the original idea and displays a lack of even a modicum amount of knowledge/understanding on your behalf and is not backed by any facts from the article or anywhere else for that matter. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.1/14/2010 4:29:08 PM |

I just came in here to say...
If I work out everday and get very strong, those genes are passed on to my children.

^^once again. i'm not answering these questions because I don't understand it. I'm asking them to help YOU understand it.
Where do you think these multiple alleles originated? 1/14/2010 8:27:03 PM |

freudian slip.
These alleles form as mutations over time. as dna replicates it will not always be the same each time and variations/mutations occur. the more mates this person has or the more adapt the offspring of this person are the more these traits will get passed along and the more they will show.
I really hope you're not a biology teacher. not even to the special ed class.1/15/2010 9:26:04 AM |
