After doing my taxes, I'm thinking of doing a cover of a certain Beatles song, but changing the title to

While My Asshole Gently Weeps

Between State and Federal, I'll owe $4100.

Husband and I decided to put 10k in traditional IRAs so we would about break even......

I cannot believe how much our taxes were

[Edited on April 11, 2010 at 11:29 PM. Reason : We even have extra taken out of my husband's paycheck.]

I didn't think we would get much back this year because we both cut our with-holdings pretty low...

us both being full or over halftime students helped a shit ton.

Turbo Tax says the average filer has 6900 or so in Medical deductions.

WTF

My wife was in the hospital for half the year almost and we still didn't have enough medical stuff to break past the 7.5% barrier.

Someone's lying.

The fact that you had just 10k sitting around to throw in an IRA... I wish I had that problem.

I received my refund today, including the 8k home buyer's credit. I mailed it in around the first week of March.

Regarding the additional documentation in question from earlier in the thread, I only sent in the tax forms, W2, and signed HUD.

Someone help please...I have only filed my taxes to get a return for the last two years. Someone told me I could go back up to three years to get my unclaimed monies from the government. So, does that make it tax year 2005-2006, or 2006-2007. Wish I could get my monies back from high school too, boo...thanks for any help!!

^^^did you file a tax return for 2007 or 2008. The rule is 3 years from the filing date. So on Thursday, it will be April 15, 2010. You could get a return in for tax year 2006 if you do it by this thursday, if not then you'll only be able to file a return for 2007. You may still be assessed a failure to file penalty.

Failure to file penalty is only assessed if you owe taxes. If you do not owe then you get all of your refund back but no interest on it

turbotax

getting $1850 back (with american opportunity credit)

is there some reason I never receive a 1098-T from ncsu? it's not like I'm going to school for free... for the education deduction I pulled up my account and just added up all the tuition I paid in 2009

"A 1098-T tax form has not been prepared

IRS regulations state that NC State University does not need to provide a 1098-T Tax Form for students who meet certain conditions.

Based on university records, your account activity met one of the following criteria:

1. No qualifying tuition or fee transactions were posted to the student's account during the calendar year.

2. The information reporting requirements do not apply with respect to any individual who is a nonresident alien (as defined in section 7701(b) and Sec. 301.7701(b)-3 of this chapter) during the calendar year, unless the individual requests the institution to report.

3. The information reporting requirements do not apply with respect to any individual who is enrolled during the calendar year only in courses for which no academic credit is offered by the institution.

4. The information reporting requirements do not apply with respect to any individual whose qualified tuition and related expenses are waived in their entirety or are paid entirely with scholarships.

5. The University has no social security number for the student. "

Pretty sure none of these apply to me. I guess it's possible I never gave them my SSN but I thought I did.
An email to Reg&Rec should take care of it for tax year 2010

i took the $7500 interest-free "loan" last year...turbotax doesn't seem to mention it in my return, and so my federal is ~$3000 and my state is ~$500, both refunds

aren't i supposed to start paying back that $7500 at $500/year for the next 15 years? i did the import, so it should know i took the option

ah, gotcha...good, then

it's really not a huge deal for me...i used it exactly as it was intended, for home improvements...i put in ~$700 worth (after taxes) of new insulation and got ~$200 credit on my taxes for this year...i probably wouldn't have done that if i hadn't taken the $7500

and this year i'm going to put in an inline flash heater, for which i'll get another tax credit

at the very least, i'm getting interest on the money just sitting in my account, which is better than nothing

I'm in that same ballpark

^With me, I had been making quarterly estimated tax payments based off how much was getting deducted when I was still on payroll (I switched to 1099 early in 2009). What I DIDN'T factor in was the self employment tax you're assessed as a 1099 subcontractor

I'm not sure but could it be that you have wait until it is accepted by NC? I know with the H&R online I submitted it and it was 2 days later I got an email saying it was accepted and that I could print my return with the DCN (which is some kind of confirmation number).

[Edited on April 15, 2010 at 7:44 AM. Reason : It's been a few years since I had to pay so I can't remember how that was handled.]

You can e-file your federal using your tax software/website, but while you can file North Carolina .online, you can't do it through H&R Block, Turbotax, etc. You have to do it on the NCDOR website

If I hadn't gone through what I did, I'd have ended up owing $3k.

Wrong...

All softwares should give you the ability to print and mail a voucher with payment. You dont need to go to the NCDOR website to handle this. Vouchers with payment get mailed to:

NCDOR
PO Box 25000
Raleigh, NC 27640-0640

while in theory i should be filing at the earliest possible moment to get my cash monies ($3500 in total) back from the gubment, i don't care enough to bother until i have to...i dropped mine and my fiancée's state returns off at the post office yesterday at 4:45 (not sure if the avent ferry location was staying open late or not)

i do this with work and school, too...i work much better under pressure than i do when i have plenty of time, if for no other reason than i'm a perfectionist...if i do ANYTHING early, i second-guess myself over and over and over again until i go back and change things (whether they need to be changed or not)

the thing is, i'm pretty awesome...i can count the number of times on one hand that i've made mistakes as a result of waiting until the last minute

it's a "bad" habit, but since it rarely (i'd say never, but i don't want to jinx myself) causes problems save for a bit of stress at the last minute, i can't think of a good reason to change...then again, my procrastination doesn't inconvenience anyone else like your mother-in-law's did, so i get where you're coming from

^ I am the exact same way.

I submitted my return (and payment) at like 10p.m. last night.

Hell, I actually did pretty well by doing almost all of the return on Sunday night. When I found out that I owe money, i decided to wait until the 15th to actually submit.

so i've been checking the IRS Where's My Refund link, which said my refund was deposited April 30. Tried calling the hotline today, but it's all automated. Found this sequence online today, which got me to talk to an actual person within about 5 minutes, and she was very helpful. if you need to actually call the irs about your refund, try this

Call 1-800-829-1040
Do NOT follow the prompts about WMR -
Select Personal Income Taxes option 2
Select Tax History Press 2
For all other press 3
For all other press 2
Then enter the information via dial pad - and you will be sent to a representative
