Lol, my Cubs are officially a disgrace, but this quote is telling. The Sox could win 5 WSeries in a row and would still have an inferiority complex towards their less successful but more popular big brother to the north. The White Sox pitching woes could be a lot worse. In 2004, the White Sox could have won the division but were plagued with having NO-ONE as a fifth starter. We're talking Danny Wright, Neal Cotts, Arnie Munoz, Felix Diaz, Jason Grilli. It was horrible. Granted, their #4 starter in 2004 was Scott Schoenweiss, so that didn't help either. The 2004 Sox still won 83 games.

With as good as this year's rotation has been of late, and with (the amazing 9 game winning) Freddy Garcia now the #4 starter and Hudson (AAA: 3.47/1.20 line with 108 Ks in 93.1 innings, 17 starts)
about to claim #5 spot in a little less than a week, I think they might be able to get by without Peavy. Bear in mind Peavy was pretty awful for the first two months of the season and was getting dogged 2 out of 3 starts. He was only as recently good as the White Sox have been.

I guess my question is.. can the Sox continue to keep up with this clutch hitting in August and September?

I think the Sox still have 17 games left against Minnesota and Detroit, too. That's huge.

And if you think about most teams don't have great 5th starters anyway. If the guy can go 5 innings and give up 3-4 runs you take it.

I'm always a little hesitant about having a AAA guy be your #5, and despite Freddy's good season he's the type of guy I see falling apart and getting shelled for the rest of the season and saying "well, it was good while it was lasted". You never want to get reduced to 3 above-average starters and nothing but crap the other two turns in the rotation.
