Yes, it was abhorrent that they were paying any money whatsoever to France. But, as I understand it, Haiti today was the worst form of kleptocracy, run for the benefit of six families which use their many monopolies (both economic and political) to fill up their Swiss bank accounts. As such, every dollar richer Haiti was, the bigger those bank accounts become.

As such, whatever they paid France, it was 60+ years ago. It cannot have any demonstrable impact upon the current lives of Haitians. The U.S. government paid quite a bit of money to France during the 19th century, could anyone argue that has anything to do with our current standard of living?

Scary observation: Cookies made from dirt are a recent invention in Haiti. The average Haitian had more to eat back when they were paying French Reparations than they did before the Earthquake.

Fact

Sounds like the story of half the countries in Africa...

And yet, although they are more rural and more geographically isolated in Africa, Haiti being just a short jump from Miami, citizens in the poorest half of African states have more to eat. The reason is, of course, local and political. Most African nutcases organize as a dictatorship or tribal rule, which while kleptocratic are able to enforce some semblance of monopoly on theft, which produces returns for investment (steal less now so I can steal more later). Meanwhile, Haiti has six competing thieving power centers, creating a tragedy of the commons where whatever I don't steal just gets stolen by one of the other five families.

"CNN: Medicare Paying 110% To U.S. Hospitals For Haitian Patients"
http://videos.mediaite.com/video/CNN-Medicare-Paying-110-To-U-S

Just saw this video which mentions taxes being used for this. And with tax time approaching, I'm glad my taxes are going to stuff like health care & our troops there for relief efforts.

Well if we would stop giving so much money to Israel then we would help out Haiti a decent amount. Plus not to be that guy but people talking about Katrina. So many people went down there just to help so they could make some money. So i mean to give people shit for not donating, you never know what angle people are playing with seeming to donate for the "good cause". Find charities that are nationally recognized and donate to them if you want to help out.

why isn’t the hundreds of millions donated to the red cross being used for this?

I don’t care that taxes are going to this, but it seems that the money they raised from texting could be allocated for this purpose...
